Are there any "computer performance improvements" when using the optional power cord? I'm aware that it allows my system to keep operating with my laptop off but are there any other benifits that I'm not aware of???

It sometimes helps with USB drop outs.

Using an external power supply shouldn't affect performance, but will be necessary when using the THRUS without the USB cable powering the unit.
