Definitely pricey. But I admit adjustable heights, compact size when broken down and a carrying case make it quite unique. All of those features make it not only convenient but also one of a kind. I personally use and love the icurve, but i would not rule this stand out as an pretty cool alternative. If you don't have a stand that is working for you this one seems great.

Guys, its Serato. You know what that means. Any laptop stand update will be downloadable from this board for free! ;) That should def. be a reason to buy it :)

any word from Serato just how high the hirise is (and more importantly how wide is the space between the legs)

Great, I got this one www.bedbathandbeyond.com <- click, some weeks ago, now I had a gig where I needed it, and my laptop was too big. Damned.
RiceCube 3:47 AM - 28 January, 2006
For the Serato team, there's a typo in the hiRise description. It should say "damage or LOSE any of the parts..." instead of "loose" like that girl is loose...
djHSL 3:58 AM - 28 January, 2006
It isn't cheap, but for a (relatively) low volume production run
it isn't too bad, either.

There's a lot of thought gone into making this stand STABLE and adjustable, with great airflow for a notebook. The way the height
adjustment works is a perfect example of elegant simplicity.

A nice piece of work.

Yeah, but 1st, I would have to find someone who sends me another one (I am not from the states, overseas) plus, the next size is the extra huge big thing. The laptop would fit on it, but it will eat to much space on the base, so the TT's have to be put far from each other, and you certainly know many clubs have very limited space. :(

plus=2nd.
mister iLL 3:19 PM - 28 January, 2006
i can't believe they're charging this much for what seems to be some stamped aluminum, threaded rods, and plastic knobs. i understand that r+d costs always need to be a factor in any product, but did it really take that much to come up with this design? and as far as prototypes, this isn't some crazy 3d cnc machined piece that costs tons of dough to make up with every iteration...

then again, i look at all of the offerings from the laptop stand thread postings, and it seems a little less ridiculous. but $85?!? that's gonna keep a lot of people from buying it.
pjmoney 7:35 PM - 28 January, 2006
Are there any specs on this thing?? how high/low it can go? also, I use a coffin for my gear, I wanna see pics with a coffin set up. Does it fit on top of the mixer, or under the coffin?? Damn, if they wanna sell it for $85 someone better get on some better marketing and show me something.
skinnyguy 9:26 PM - 28 January, 2006
does it have master tempo?
vidoona 11:27 PM - 28 January, 2006
$85 is a rediculous price and perhaps an ingenious business move too.......hundreds of posts in that forum by people hungry for it and lots of people will probably buy it, but it's a total price guage.

Screw R&D costs too. Any engineering student with a semester of school or a machinest apprentice could of figured out a similiar solution in 2 hours tops.

Props to Rane/Serato for recognizing a high product demand and acting on it, but still.....
click 11:42 PM - 28 January, 2006
It's funny, when a new product comes. There are those that gobble it up, which makes the manufacturer ignore the cries of 'too high' costs...

Damnit, it's going to be a paid plug-in!

click, I completely agree. Like the SL1, you could probably park a car tire up on that thing at the highest setting.

Does anyone have any idea how much it would cost to have a small run of these things manufactured? If so, then they can come back here and bitch about cost. This ain't no Ikea shit you put your Stanton mixer and Gemini TT's on.

Or maybe some just don't want to feel ripped off.

I personally don't have any use for a stand.

besides, i drop $85 every couple weeks for a haircut.

Question about the stand: I'm assuming it can be placed on top of the mixer, no? If so, can it be adjusted depending on the size of the mixer (19inch, 10inch, etc...)?

Thanks!
DJ GaFFle 12:09 PM - 1 February, 2006
As far as uses, the best use of it was well demonstrated by the picture of Jazzy Jay using the High-rise at the NAMM show. I found the link to the picture somewhere via this forum. The laptop looked like it was elevated about 2feet high and was very accessible.

AJ 2:09 AM - 2 February, 2006
I thought I'd better say a few words about the HiRise laptop stand for those of you who haven't been around for the full history. It may help you understand why the price is what it is.

It all started many years ago when we went to the first trade show to show off the earliest prototype of Scratch LIVE. I had an idea in mind of how I wanted the demonstation area to look, and I designed a plexiglass stand to raise the computer above the mixer. It looked like this: scratchlive.net

Now of course, people loved Scratch LIVE, but the thing I noticed at these shows was, everyone wanted my stand, and show after show, I'd end up coming home without a stand and having to make another one when I got back. Which I usually didn't mind too much, because that stand while it looked cool, was a total pain in the ass to carry around, it took up a massive amount of space in my luggage. So I started redesigning it, with some important goals in mind: [1] It had to be collapsable or easy to take apart so you could get it around (no DJ was going to want to stick the plexglass beast in their kit) [2] It had to be light [3] It had to be adjustable [4] it had to be strong [5] It had to fit neatly into a record bag.

After some head scratching, I came up with version 3 (we won't talk about v2 - it was rubbish) which seemed to fit the bill, it looked like this: scratchlive.net

I had some made, we tested them out at a trade show, and unfortunately they were no good, because the design made them springy. This meant whenever you hit a key on your laptop the whole thing wobbled up and down, which was distracting. It was also hard to assemble on your own.

After some more thought and a lot of sketches, I finally reached the current design, which fits all the criteria I set. The hard part was making the stand big enough to be useful but still somehow managing to fit it into a 12"x12" box so that it would slip neatly into your record bag, I figured you'd have a bit of room in there no that you don't need to carry as many records any more.

Over the last two years I've probably spent about 50 hours designing, redesigning, testing prototypes and arguing with metalworking companies. I'm not sure if an engineering degree would have made the whole process only take 2 hours, but having gone through the process myself, I doubt it.

The first thing you should understand is that we are making NO MONEY on this product. So "why make it?", you may ask. Well, because every time I come to a show with my latest design, everybody wants it, and I can see it would make a big difference for those who want it. This product exists purely as a result of my love of the design process, and my desire to create the perfect DJ laptop stand. I really have no problem with people buying the pizza stand or the bed bath and beyond item - if they work for you then you'd be crazy to spend this much on my stand. But if you want all the little things that set it apart from any other stand on the market, then it's going to cost you, because that's just what it costs.

We're not Bed Bath and Beyond, and we're not expecting to sell a stand to every pizza joint in the world, so they're individually made in New Zealand and we only made 150 in total. We have no idea who will buy them and we're not expecting to ever make money on it. The rods are custom designed, the parts are cnc punched and drilled, then powder coated. It all adds up. Maybe if we made 10,000 of them it would be a lot cheaper, but we're not going to do that. Even the packaging was carefully thought out. I wanted you to be able to reuse it again and again so you never lose any parts.

And then there's the small matter of getting it from the remote island of New Zealand to you. Part of the $85 dollars includes some shipping to get the stands to a more central location for cheaper shipping. Each complete stand package is 1kg (2.2 pounds), which costs a bit to move around. We've now decided to take all shipping out of the price and charge it completely separately.

So now the price of the stand is $70, but you will have to pay the full shipping cost of $25 to the US. But it also means that if you want to fly to New Zealand and pick it up yourself, we won't charge you any shipping!

Ultimately this stand is a part of your professional set-up, if all you need is the BB&B breakfast tray, then go for it, it's only five bucks. If you want something designed for you, and you've got the money, then the HiRise is the ultimate. It's like your mixer, if you want something really well thought out, well made, with a ton of features, then get the TTM 57 SL, if not then Numark makes a mixer for just 200 bucks, and you get what you pay for. Life is full of choices.
DJ BLEND 2:14 AM - 2 February, 2006

ps....thank you so much for designing this....i know myslef and many others really really appreciate this from the bottom of our hearts. you f*&cking rock man!

AJ good post. Would it be possible to get one of these out to all of Rane's distributers? I know the distributer here in Canada and would love to try it out.

As well, are they engraved with production number? Kinda like the gold tech 12's. Limited ed: 24 of 150.

Do you plan to make more if these all sell out?
djnicknice 4:20 AM - 2 February, 2006
$85 isn't sh*t. This is very reasonable. Quality lcd arms etc. easily cost $100+. This is also a custom solution for SL users. Probably not cheap to manufacture. I am waiting for the option to order now.

AJ, when will this be available? I did not see an option to order on the Serato site.

$85 is nothing. I can't use the pizza stand cuz it's a pain to pack up and carry around. I am *real* big on having a compact setup that can get into and out of the club quickly and optimally by myself. Great post AJ and I for one will be lining up to buy one first day they are available.

It must say that on it too. :-)
el presidente 5:48 AM - 2 February, 2006
i've been looking forward to this stand (and have checked on the site few times today to no avail), but hope i don't miss out. i know how fast 150 units can move. love my icurves, but want this joint. hope you make a second run (or that i can get online before all of them sell).
Javier 1:02 PM - 2 February, 2006
I dont think it looks unstable. I can see it being easily knock off balance and i could not risk that, unless, Serato offers to replace dropped laptops if the stand doesnt do its job. Come now, i know that is a little harsh but laptops are not cheap. I busted my last laptop in 2004 and i barely got a replacement.
If i was to use this stand i would drill some holes into the bracket that sits on the mixer and bolt the bracket to the mixer whole on the face of the board. just to be safe.
DJ BLEND 1:26 PM - 2 February, 2006

DJ_Mike_Coquilla 4:05 PM - 2 February, 2006

punosion 5:12 PM - 2 February, 2006
I don't even have a laptop yet and I still want one. I'm betting this thing could hold my 70lb. CRT just fine for the time being. ;)

Seriously, though...I knew from the start that they would set the price as low as possible, just enough so they wouldn't lose money on it. If you look at that beast, it just looks like it's worth it, even at $85. It appears to be designed to hold up a shelving unit in a warehouse.

Rane makes products that suit my buying style...choose your purchases right and you'll only need to purchase it once.

AJ, good explanation. I retract my earlier comments and didn't mean to attack. I was not aware you only made a run of only 150 and in a country like New Zealand. (See Suggestions Below)

In regards to the criticism I received from other users though in both PMs and on this forum:

"Don't bitch until you've been through a design process."
-I have 2 engineering degrees from Purdue University

"You have no idea how much it cost to produce something."
-Took the industrial manufacturing specialty option in school

"If you can't afford this, you ain't gettin' enough gigs. I spend like 10G's on my haircut/hoes/alcohol."
-I play clubs/parties 2 nights a week and work a well paying engineering job....nuff said. I am just a thrifty SOB.

So, a suggestion for AJ:
Manufacturing of things like this makes no sense in the US, New Zealand, or almost any European nation. Generally stuff made in China is crap, but metalwork is an exception. It may take a while to get a good relationship with the company, but once you do, the cost benefits would be amazing. Only problem is, you'd have to have a minimum order of 1000 or so.....just a consideration.
s42000 5:13 PM - 3 February, 2006
vidoona,

A chinese made car lift nearly killed me once .. I would still question some of the the metalwork.

I would not like my laptop crashing into my newly acquired 57.

3. It needs a shelf for the SL1 but I got that covered. I will send a picture when I get it.
4. I almost returned my Road Ready 10" mixer case but now we are good with this stand.
5. Thank you for all the hard work.
6. Sorry I doubted you.

vidoona, when we've shipped all the manufacturing and service jobs to third world countries, who is going to have money to pay for goods and services in the first place?

When we've offshored the manufacturing, how will we fund the small shops that offer low volume production runs, or help us out with prototyping and stuff?

And when the economies in those third world countries develop to the point where people want parity wages with developed nations, who is then going provide the labour?

Globalisation sucks. It's time for the next revolution.
hologram 11:50 PM - 3 February, 2006
^^^ One theory is that the universe expands and contracts. Then does it all over again. Funny thing. you can almost apply this to everything. So just wait. Rome will happen again.

My waistline is better than the universe. It just expands.
djHSL 12:25 AM - 4 February, 2006

djHSL thanks for the input. Revolution. :) www.scratchlive.net <- click.

But I am not sure about the statement whether globalisation really sux. Its a chance for other countries, at first they will be ripped off (just like now) but it means all workers in the world can unite. Unity.
djHSL 11:02 AM - 4 February, 2006
My idea of a revolution is a little less touchy-feely ;)

When I am ruler of the universe I am going to ban the sale of investment securities within five years of date of purchase.

The death of all the speculators would be almost as good as the death of all the lawyers.

mmm....politics....not why I joined this forum (deffinetely OT nik).

djHSL, I do agree with you. My dad owns a hard-working, efficient manufacturing business and has struggled greatly in recent years to make a profit do to his competition in China; BUT someday if you were to own a business and could make two-three-ten times as much money having it made in China, I don't think you'd be so adament. Prices govern the market, not pride regardless of how right/wrong it is. No need to reply, I have no desire to get in tiffs on the SSL forum....just think about it.

In regards to this stand: I sure as hell don't want my Rane audio gear starting to be made in China because there is no doubt that it's cheaper stuff. But lets be honest, it's a friggin' stand, not a car jack and it's made of simple parts with simple construction. It wouldn't drop your 5lb laptop on your dope new mixer, and it would cost a lot less.

When it comes down to it, the thing is already built and people will probably pay for it, so let's drop this.
click 4:54 AM - 5 February, 2006
Why do u think china stuff is cheaper stuff?... do you think Chinese are inferior people or something? I know they take less money, but why would someone assume their craftsmanship is always less.. (maybe it's that 'America rules' mentality)

Example, Macs are better computers.. but most are made in china..

Why do people buy Mac's / PC's / Beanie Babies Madie in China?
Because that's the ONLY source for those products these days. Sure, they are good products, but only after the 10th time going back and forth with the Chinese company that makes it because they NEVER get your design right the first time. It's obvious you've never dealt with an actual Chinese manufacturing company, so eat your pride and quit showing how ignorant you are.

Need to call me ignorant just because you don't know what generalizations mean. Like everywhere, there are good and bad... BOTH IN CHINA, JAPAN, AMERICA etc. etc..

If you have no desire to get into tiffs don't call people ignorant because they have different EXPERIENCES.. And just chill out..

I will say, and refuse to respond after, that if is pretty damn retarded to say you don't want to get into tiffs with people then turn around in your very next post and call someone ignorant...

I wish the pictures of the other models were out too...
I had to talk to odyssey about an unreltated replacement part this morning and the guy said that they are also apparenlty working on laptop add-on stands for current case models too.....he said it's not official yet and may be a ways off, but I think that's a great solution considering Odyssey has such a large market share for cases.
dj synystr 3:10 PM - 13 February, 2006
why spend $85 when you can spend $50 www.scratchlive.net AND ITS CUSTOME MADE! i'm not knocking rane's but the one i use is crazy. and for a custome piece you get it real fast.
vidoona 2:58 AM - 14 February, 2006
Eh.....looks kinda large and cumbersome. The Rane one can at least have its support legs slide under a flight case for a cleaner look and also to stablilize the stand better.

Imagine a tight DJ booth in a club where the stand would have to sit in between the mixer and a short riser wall...you need the stand to have its legs fit under the case as to fit in the tight space.

It's good work for a custom solution though.
dj synystr 5:25 AM - 14 February, 2006
um ok i guess your not looking at the right one then because i have played in some of the tightest places my friend and always can use my stand. it fits OVER the mixer.
vidoona 11:33 AM - 14 February, 2006
There's only one picture.......I'm looking at the right one.

On this stand I see two feet made of triangular brackets that are at least 2-3 inches tall on the top of the hypotenuse meaning there is no way this stand's feet can fit under a flightcase....thus my argument from before.

So, your saying it fits over the mixer which I'm assuming means the feet sit on top of the mixer....well what size? Not every club has the same size. So is this thing sized for a djm-600? If so, how do you accomodate 10" or 19" mixers?

I haven't graduated from college, I know what a hypotenuse is, and actually used the word about 2 months ago. I actually never used it in college anyway.

What's so funny? Should we stop using words to accurately describe a circle, like radius, diameter and circumference, just because we think everyone around are a bunch of uneducated dweebs? It's really not a hard word or concept at all.

Nice catch! I'm still happy with ordering my serato one as it can be used all over the place. I will order one of the turntable ones from oddessy(if its ATA rated) or have road ready custom one like it for my mobile rig.

Sorry guys, my bad. I'll try and keep my language under three syllables since how intelligent, accurate conversation is so funny. Heaven forbid, we try and reduce the amount of stupid/repetative/ambiguous posts on here by being clear and concise the first time we post a question or an answer...

Maybe I could of just described it as "the long part of the three sided shaped metal chunk thingy on the other side of the shape from the one corner that's kinda pointy. lol teehee" Would that have been more on your level? (I know one of you is just dying to post back some cheeky, half-retarded comeback, but please resist)

As to dj synystr's post......I see what you're saying with the stand sitting on top of a mixer and always having a 10 inch available, so it's a good stand for your needs. I'm not at the rider contract level myself so props to you. I once spun with DJ Funk.......his rider was verbal for a DJM-600, 2 Tech-12s, and an eighth of weed (all of which was procured as he smoked a joint on stage to "hoes in this house").

For hologram, I do believe they are ATA (no pic yet for the turntable case), but I recall the Odyssey guy on the phone mentioning that it was. As far as your experience with custom road ready cases, I'd be interested to hear how your experiences have been as I'm considering getting one from them too. Send me a PM about it since how it's kinda off topic.

You could always get your own presses done... but thats kinda illigal.

Actually, You could make a dubplate of the last 1/2 of the CV02 and the other half scratch samples, instruemntals ..etc.

Then just set your start point to half way and you good to go. Then scratch it up with a flip switch.
