Rule reminders

When posting in the general section:
Quote:
try to be polite and inclusive.

When starting a new post:
Quote:
Please keep your message within the site rules and do not organise any illegal activities. Thanks!

Is it really necessary to reiterate the "try to be polite and inclusive." "and do not organise any illegal activities."? Sounds like mommy and daddy are telling me to look left and right when crossing the street. I feel like I was in Orwell and Big Brother is watching me. Gives me an uncomfortable feeling and puts me in a weird mood. Sounds like this place is a potential crime scene ;)

Shouldn't it be sufficient just to remind the posters about respecting the rules?

Itimidating.

Not as intimidating as "Threads of Interest, Posting Rules, and Regulations. Read or be banned 7 days!"

www.howardforums.com <-- The information in this forum is very valuable... but I don't want to post here at all.

I think you're over stating it a touch.

I'm not particularly fond of the wording of the private messages one. That was just the best I could come up with late in an afternoon... I'll reword it at some stage to sound less naggy. But something of the sort will be there.

I do think it's important to have those reminders. And there will be more of them. Certainly the rules should be linked above/near anywhere where someone can post. And the private messages one is important because a lot of people genuinely think it's okay to break the rules or organise illegal trades in private.

I think you perhaps have too high an opinion of the average forum poster :) This is the internet - it brings out the worst in people.

Probably.

The point is... it gives me the feeling "hey... we are watching you" and I just don't like that. I understand that people are breaking rules and they need to be aware it is not okay and that it will have consequences but this is what I am acknowledging by agreeing to respect the forum rules. That should be enough.

Reading the lines I quoted just doesn't give me a good feeling. :(

As a general rule we're *not* watching private messages. But if we have reason to believe someone is doing something dodgy in private discussions then we may check.

Perhaps the private discussion sentence should say something along those lines...

In the end... these (my) objections are just part of one opinion. Don't know if others feel the same. I must say I am quite sensitive on such topics as observations, and prejudgement (it is a sort, even if I understand your reasons I probably would not mention this and/or remind the users with every post).

Not sure if you can follow me. (Language barrier).

Uhm.. double post?? I just clicked once on post.

I follow you.

Perhaps in future the messages could have a close button, so that those who've read them and don't want to see them again can click them away.

Threads are now live updating. Every 30 seconds they will check the server for new messages and insert them at the bottom if they exist.

The double post you saw was probably a bug (which I fixed a few minutes ago). It didn't actually double post. It just got your post from the server twice.

It also now does a check for new messages when you preview a message and when you post.

Sounds like addtional load on your servers ;)

It most certainly does :) Which is why it only does the polling when you're viewing near the end of the thread (ie within the last 1000 pixels of the page).

After the last missing bits of the forum code are finished up, I'm going to be be diving full strength into optimisations. So hopefully there'll be room to move after that. Which will mean some other fancy things could be put in too.

BTW: On the new forum sometimes the threads load sometimes almost instantly - very very good. But then... it takes again longer (though probably not so long as on the old forum).

Only things right now which bothers me (and why I have to use the old forum) are... graveyard and the new post count is wrong very often. If I go to the old forum, reload the "tracked threads" page they appear correct again. Maybe this helps you locating the issue.

The post count problem I've been seeing is where it says that all messages in the thread are new, when in reality not all of them are new. I haven't had a chance to look at that one properly yet, but it's near the top of my list.

I have this issue too, it's annoying because it means the link doesn't point to #new so you have to scroll down to the first unread post, it's like using phpBB all over again.

Yeah, quite frustrating, I know. Hopefully it'll be fixed soon. All just a matter of time.
