Does anyone here spin any psytrance?

Does anyone here spin any psytrance (I don't mean commercial trance, not that I particularly have anything against it, I mean stuff like Protoculture, Infected Mushroom, Astrix, Tikal, Talamasca , Logic Bomb, etc.) using SSL, either "full-on" or progressive? If so, do you find SSL works well with mixing this? Obviously with psytrance its more of a case of beatmatching and playing with the EQs, rather than scratching - though I have heard of one guy who does "scratchedelic psytrance - loon! :-)
The reason I'm asking is that I've been mixing techno/trance (and tech, progressive and deep house, but that's not my main style) stuff on vinyl for a few years, but have been getting more into the psytrance side of things recently (just love those twisted sounds...), however almost all of this is on CD, so I've been thinking of getting SSL, so that I can mix MP3s ripped from my psytrance CDs...
cheers
Paul

I spin Psy, Trance, Prog., house, techno and breaks....(sometimes all in one set ; ) But I've been playin around with a lot more psytrance these days. SSL works wonderful... the only thing I've noticed is that with psytrance, the beats are essentially "sharper" than other styles, and CDJ's are really the only things that are precise enough to keep those beats constantly lined up. It's just a fact with TT's that you get a small amount of drift that may flange Psy stuff in and out now and then....however, TT's are don't really have a resolution where as usual CDJ's have a .01% resolution for the pitch.
Basically if you can mix psytrance on TT's you can mix it with SSL, it's that good and as precise as your dj abilities.

Okay, thanks for the info. I was a bit put off getting SSL after speaking to a couple of psytrance DJs at a party at the weekend, who thought that buying CDJs (the Pioneer CDJ-1000 in particular) was a much more sensible approach to take (mind you I don't think they knew about Serato Scratch, only Final Scratch) - they cited a load of quite sensible sounding reasons why, though I was a bit too drunk to remember them all... Anyway, the upshot of this is that I'm not so sure whether to get SSL or not, though getting a pait of CDJ-1000s is not really an option for me financially :-(

if you already have turntables and don't need the CDJ's features than ssl is a no-brainer unless you already have a good collection of CDs.
at the very least you save a plastic tree when you use ssl. ;)

...and if you already have a laptop to use with SSL.

I've got a good collection of both vinyl and CDs, though the vinyl is mostly old stuff that I don't play much anymore (which is why I've not been mixing much recently).

I have a new 1.5Ghz Apple Powerbook and a pair of Technics 1200s plus a Vestax MPC-17 mixer...

SSL will work perfectly for you. Be sure to be hooked up to the latest patches and builds...10.3.5 and SSL's 1113
I run it with a 12" Powerbook, 786 mb RAM and never had a problem since 1113, although I am thinkin about gettin a new 15" PBook simply because I missed the screen space.

ok...so it's either ~$500USD for SSL vs. ~$2000USD for a pair of CDJ1000's....
I think your decision has probably been made, you just needed some reinforcement... :-)

:-)
Well, £450 ($815) vs. £1400 ($2530), which is almost as stark a difference I guess

Quite possibly... I may see if I can pick up SSL in the USA, as I'm over there for a conference in Denver mid-October, and its only $600 (inc tax) there...

If you were gunna go with CDJ's you might as well shell out some more money for the new technic's....those things are wicked sweet :)
Seriously though, think about this...
What happenes when you roll up to a party (you've got your CD's and maybe 15 peices of older vinyl) and the CDJ's don't work, or are not present? With SSL you've got the option of playing all your CD's...otherwise you're stuck playin your older 15 peices of vinyl.
okay, so you're saying "but what if the TT doesn't work!" Well, then you have SSL's CD's to play your music through CDJ's (assuming the party has CDJ's)...
If both the TT's don't work (theoretically you can still mix if you only have one TT workin) and CDJ's are not working/not present, the party's not happening anyway so.....
Basically with SSL you can bring your interface to the party, where as with 1000's you're gunna have to lug those to every party.

that one turntable mixing takes a little while to get used to, i kept hitting the wrong control and cutting the music all together.
but once you get used to it it's pretty sweet, unless you scratch mixing that way is cake, you just gotta remmeber to hit the right controls :-P.
