TTM57 vs Pioneers...

Hi...
Am considering getting either the TTM57SL or a Pioneer DJM700. Anyone got any experience with both? I know the spec's quite different, 4 channel v 2, but would appreciate to hear a comparison on the matching features. Also, hows the output sound quality and sound quality of the TTM57's recordings?
TTM57 appeals as it seems like the ultimate in convienience, but I'm also thinking the pioneers are industry standard for a reason and its prob wise to stick with them on that basis...
Anyone used the MIDI on the Pioneer also - does it work well with SSL?
Thanks!

The 800 is the standard...not the 700. Also there are a ton of clubs installing the TTM-57 so who knows what the standard will be in a year or so. If the ever drop a 4 channel version of the 57 then you will probably see the new standard.

Midi works no problem on my DJM800 with SSL, i use it mostly at home though for setting loops and cue points quickly

Thanks, cool to know clubs are installing the TTM's! And I agree, a 4 channel 57 would be top choice.
I was thinking DJM700 over the 800 as I'd still get familar with the Pioneer family of mixers, and it sits within my price / features range. 800 would be a bit overkill for me prob. The TTM works out more cost effective thou as don't lay out again for serato, and then with the Pioneer maybe even think of getting a faderfox I guess depending on how much can be controlled with the inbuilt midi...
How does the 57 weigh up against the new DJMs in terms of sound quality? Pioneer just revamped their range if I'm not mistaken, made big improvements in sound quality I think... Have seen other posts comparing the 909 v the 57, and the 57 seems to come out on top, but nothing on the new 700/800's.
Cheers!

The audio quality has been discussed many times on here. Best bet is to search for that one. In my opinion the 57 is the best sounding mixer I've ever heard. The outputs are loud and crisp.

The difference between the DJM 600 and 800 is like night and day. The 800 is the cleanest sounding mixer ive ever played on. Quite a few people don't like the fact that it's digital though and prefer a warm analogue sound like the allen & heath/formula sound mixers (which i also think are great sounding). the TTM57 is one of the few mixers ive not played on, i've never come across one installed in a UK club.

I own both a DJM 600 (previous to the 700) and a TTM57SL. I love them both BUT, I am primarily a house/dance dj and I HATE the curve on the 57.. If you scratch, and cut alot, the 57 is awesome, but I perfer the DJM 600 for mixing..

If you get a chance try out an Ecler Evo 5. Better sound quality hands down. The effects sound a lot better as well.

Hey, thanks guys... FYI I ended up getting the TTM57SL on Sat, haven't had that much time to play but so far am really impressed. Sound quality is fantastic, I had the Ecler Nuo2.0 before and this is much better. Curves are fully customisable on all the faders as well.
Anyways, thanks all...

it went back to the shop... I did like it, is a nice mixer, but the loop send and receive wasn't working properly on it. Had a KAOSS Pad linked up with it, returned them both for the TTM-57SL.

I've been mixing house more these days and I've been looking at the djm800. Looks like a nice mixer. The 57 i have sounds great though, but only two channels limits your creativity big time when it comes to house. Now if they would come up wuth a 4 channel, I think Rane would become the industry standard.

for a while ive been thinking about selling the 57 and getting a djm800, i have the sl1 box so will still use the software for the time being. the problems ive been having lately as well as the multitrack 'con' have started to get the better of me.
im no longer recommending the product these days - its convenient for mobiles etc, but no different to the other products on the market now (bloated and buggy) in my opinion

it does all the things that the likes of torq and traktor do, and before it could, everyone complained about them being overwhelming and that ssl was better because of its simplicity.
i dont use video, midi, auto loops... in fact the only thing that has really benefited me has been sub-crates, and they freeze the screen when being opened.
having to use numerous other programs to keep the library in check makes me think something as simple as file management would have been more important to implement than some of the flashy bells and whistles we have in order to keep up with torq and traktor.
i noticed you didnt defend it being buggy - which is why we stuck with the product in the first place, it was solid.
now its problematic and in relation to the updates, doesnt do what they claimed it could
again this is my current opinion on it all, and nothing to get all bent out of shape about incase any of you keyboard warriors are about to jump in

"dude" you need to re-look at the way you use your keyboard.
Yes, I'm having a problem with the sub-crates freezing the entire screen when they open - just because you havnt heard of it, doesn't mean it doesn't happen.
If you cared to look in the help forum, you'll have noticed I have a ticket open trying to deal with this and other issues.

I mix alot of house and honestly I use the upfaders the most, rarely cut in tracks.... That's why I wish the 57 had a little longer throw like the 800,, but the eq on the 57 is muuuch nicer than the 800.

ok, i've think i've played enough on these 2 mixers in the last year to give a decent answer.
ttm 57 -
1. more functional with serato, period. its made for serato, and is highly integrated for scratch/quick mixing techniqes
2. probably not the best mixer for house and such, but there is really no reason why you couldn't use it for such, i would personally use the gains and not upfaders for mixing if i was doing all house.
3. also, this is obvious, you don;t have the range of functionality of the pio because of the fact there are 2 more channels. At the same time the size of the mixer(width) is gonna be less because of the 2 less inputs. I don't really need them, and I use the aux for a cd player if i want.
Pio 800
1. Overall sound is digital and compressed. I personally like it because it makes mixes sound really good.
2. Upfaders have much more tension, so again, better for smooth mixing, don't really like the three adjustable curve thing.
3. Efxs are cool, all i use is the delay, and so i like the 57 better. The fx knobs are above the channel faders are nice, but not necessary for what i do.
4. EQ issue. I really do not like the eqs on pio mixers and suprisingly this is my biggest issue. I do lots of blends and live mixing, and the Pioneers bass cut has always been at too high of a frequency for my life. On my 57 i kill the low and still have enough vox to work with. Killing the bass on the 800 has always taken to much away on PIO mixer, so it has to be much more carefully done. Since im trying to get through around 150-160 songs in 3 1/2 hours and speed of mixing is key. this bugs me.
overall i would still get a 57 over an 800. but if i were a dedicated edm dj, i would pick the 800. If i were richer i would own both.

yep, v good review...
I've been on the TTM-57 for a bit over a month, am very happy with it. Serato control rocks and the sound quality is great. I don't have experience with the pioneers but the EQ on the 57 works v well as Goodkat said.
Some features of the pioneer which I do wish I had...
- Separate FX controls... I have the effects on the 57 routed to the aux channel and I use the Flex FX button to route the channels into the effects, but still I find I end up swiching to the effects page because I need more control, for ex when using the echo I like to change the length of beat sync (1x, 1/4x, 1/8x, etc).
- Again on FX, would be good to have the ability to switch between more than 2 effects quickly, and without going back onto the computer
- More channels... I know there's an aux input and I do use it but if you have something plugged into it then you can't use the effects setup using the Flex FX buttons as it would be permanently applied to the aux channel.
- Another prob with the Aux channel is that you can't cue it through the headphones, so setting volume levels or beatmatching whats coming through the aux input before you bring it in is a problem. I just use it for samples so don't have the beatmatching prob, but still bit of a limitation.
- Midi clock output, so can feed straight into Ableton for example. Surely this could be implemented quite easily...? just part of the software no...?
But as I said at the beginning, I am very happy with the 57... 4 channel version with dedicated FX controls would rule thou... bring on the 58!

I hear ya on the Pio bass eq's. Have you tried killing the base with the the Low Pass "color" filter effect? I've been playing around with this lately and it actually provides a pretty smooth transition. I like to use the Roll effect on the Pio more and more, and being able to move it to different channels is cool too. I like the quick controls of my 57 and I miss them when I'm on the Pio, and I miss the efx when I'm on the 57.
I've used the Pioneer with a midi cable to control SSL but I haven't mastered it yet. Also, when it's plugged in, I can't scroll to the 1st song in any crate, or even highlight the "All" music folder... That's a problem.

yeah, i forgot about using those efx for bass cuts. I had a couple gigs last year where i used the 800 quite a bit, and one of my bigger residencies has moved up from a 600 to an 800 in the last 3 mos., so im still getting used to it again.
Using the 800 weds and going to the 57 on thurs, fri, sat, is kinda good practice, since 800s and 57s are pretty much all i see these days in the bigger clubs.

Er, right, so you *are* using a Windows machine then? ;-)
I've been a die hard non-mac user for about 15 years now. I hate Apple, they're more evil than microsoft. Sadly, their technology is better.
Okay, so Macs are now intel based, but the boards and chipsets are all Apple to my knowledge. But that's not important. Windows is an absolute sack of crap from a software engineering point of view. Everytime microsoft try to rewrite it, the marketroids force them to break it in exactly the same way they did for Windows 95, 3.1 and hell, even DOS.
Mac OS X, on the other hand, runs on a BSD kernel. That shit's been rock solid for about 30 years now. Apple just layer a nice gui on top of it, meaning that apps can't fuck each other up and you don't get the "crud buildup" you do with windows.
Now I'm sure you'll come back and try and flame be for being a geek, but I suggest you take your little bellend and go polish it elsewhere...

No, I wasn't, but you chose petty insults based on total ignorance.
Before being such a wanker in public, might I suggest you just try the solutions people are suggesting to help. Apple hardware is generally of a consistent quality and because they test all their software on only one set of hardware, chances of weird stuff being caused by subtle hardware differences are slim.
If you do want to stick with Windows, my advice would be to go with XP Pro Service Pack 2 (not convinced Service Pack 3 is stable yet) and do a fresh install of windows and *only* install Serato on there, nothing else.
I'd also suggest picking a simple machine that's indestructable rather than one with lots of bells and whistles. Something like a Lenonovo Thinkpad or Fujitsu-Siemens Lifebook, both of which I've had good experiences with in the past. Pick a spec with 2GB or RAM and a decent sized internal hard disk.
More importantly, don't go browsing dodgy websites for Warez or Pr0n using Internet Explorer on that machine, save it for one you don't care about.
Personally, if I used windows laptops for gigs, I'd save my gig laptop for purely offline use as if you put it online you'll really want a decent firewall and antivirus software. However, these tend to be common culprits for shit performance and weird behaviour.

There comes a point where every troll just needs to be told to Get Fucked.
I think you just reached that point...

Ignoring the troll, I do I miss the curve on the DJM500 crossfader. I really wish there was a way to get the same curve on the TTM57SL :-(
Of course, it would be nice if it was a 4 channel mixer too...

BattleFunk, drop it. And cjw296, you're continuing to provoke.
You've both had your one warning. If this continues I'll be forced to ban you.

BattleFunk, this has nothing to do with the issue you're having with Scratch LIVE. I do not doubt you have a valid problem that needs addressing. But please deal with that in the Help area with the help of the support staff.
I am taking you to ask for continuing your argument with cjw296. Yes, he provoked you, but if you continue it then you will be banned, just as he will be if he continues it. You are both being abusive, in breach of the site rules.
Understood?

That is still offering something for sale. It's advertising. If you continue I will be forced to ban you.

I own the Pioneer DJM 800 for about a year now, and have been a pioneer using it hehe. When i first picked up the Pioneer DJM500 back in 1997, at the time, the mixer was way ahead of its time, having built in effect modules and every essential you need as a dj. Doing my research and all i find that top names like Urei, Allen & Heath, Bozak, in which they are no longer in service, well Urei being brought back by Soundcraft and Allen & Heath still making an appearance. These company's strived towards having premium audio sound with an analog signal. I never used to look at that way until i threw on a few slabs myself on a Urei 1620LE and a Bozak CDA 10L, and i will tell you chaps that there is a huge difference in sound quality versus a top mixer from Pioneer, Rane, Vestax etc...
The innovation is building and becoming brilliant with digital, and that is where pretty much everyone is heading towards now a days. I know for a fact that i would prefer to mix regular vinyl on a system from 70's, 80's, but then again you have to keep up with the crowd and thats why i invested in a SL1 system with a mixer that could keep the quality of sound at par with it, and i best feel that a DJM800 has much to offer for a workstation.

I am relaxed. I love coming back to the forum to find that someone is telling me I'm using something wrong, then behave like I've made something up, then assume I've given up without knowing anything about my situation.
Yes, I love that.
you're using something wrong.

Actually the last I heard, djbriguy was using Windows. I recall that he gave a very detailed review of one of the lower-end Dell laptops last year.
LOL at you implying he's an Apple "fanboy".

i used to see alot of vestax, pioneer 600,and pioneer 909, or a rane ttm56 on riders. now the same cats are coming to town wanting the ttm57. its the industry standard by leeps and bounds. I will see some electro djs go with cdj1000s and the pioneer 800. I never see anything else now days. if you have a pioneer 800 and a ttm57 technics turntables and cdj1000s you can be the go to guy to rent dj backline for any national dj
