Serato Software Feature Suggestions

What features would you like to see in Serato software?

Id like see this feature added to serato in the near future.

be easier to organize files for harmonic mixing.

I just want a column for displaying keys of songs. If someday building overviews also finds the track's key, that's awesome. But for now, I'll settle for just being able to see what key my tracks are, so I can really start doing some harmonic mixing.

In addition to the requests for key tags, it would also be useful to click a button or use a context menu to show tracks that are similar (ie close in BPM / KEY) to the song currently playing. Start with the selected folder and then based on the song playing find a close BPM. Once the BPM's are determined then look at the key (if it's populated) and determine a good harmonically similar song and filter accordingly. There are simple algorithms to accomplish this task. A feature like this would give the DJ the ability to find a harmonic/non-harmonic track quickly especially in large music libraries. (if you select all it would search everything)

You want the program to pick your songs for you?

pick the songs and...mix them! I'd rather talk to the chicks in the club!

I use Mixed in key for finding the key, since there is no column in the ID3 Tag i've put it in the comment in the tag. Then you can see it in Serato too, works for me anyway.

+1 on being able to find key on songs by building overviews

and then my suggestion is a 4 way library orginization thingy if u will.

first sort tracks by bpm (high bpm on top)
second sort by key column (being it is a circle- forget the name of that circle key chart thing)

third sort by alphabetical order say by artist

and fourth alphabetically by song.

Anyone agree with this feature.

Also make library not be able to be modified without clicking and pressing shift say.

say i try to resort my library it freezes the computer for like 2 minutes.

another suggestion:
browse key requires u to hit shift+ click or shift+ control+ click.
(every time i click on this it freezes my computer for like 2 mins)
djchrischip 12:46 PM - 27 January, 2009
elaborating on the circle thing lol

there is a wheel of keys and basically all touching keys will work in a specific way...

wow i feel like the priest from chuck and larry with this half hour babble about the circle if anyone doesnt get it and wants to like ask pm me and il get back 2 u more in depth. (be prepared for an hour circle babble lmao)

I'm just happy we have a column now for the key. Not ecstatic because I'm not one that truly used the Comments field, but happy that it says Key now.

As for it reading the key, I wouldn't want my Macbook Pro doing that while performing. Analyzing that beforehand is a good idea.

Chris, to add to your idea, I think Serato should incorporate a hierarchical "sort by" columns. Maybe make them colored to distinguish their importance or priority. So if I want to sort songs by BPM first, then by key, I would click BPM 2 times, then Key once and, if I wanted to sort it by three fields, click BPM 3 times, Key twice, then Title once. Just a thought.

Not necessarily, It's kind of like the "Genius" feature that Apple developed for iTunes. I thing that would be better than a drunk promoter telling you what he thinks you should play while spilling his Jack and Coke on your Macbook Pro.

Good call. +1

How would the program know if you wanted a suggestion for the song playing on the left vs right deck? Interesting idea though. What I do now is search for the key and sort by bmp. Of course it would be nice if the key was displayed by the bmp on each deck.

...and to go on; a suggestion by a lot of users:

Display the KEY next (or under) the BPM in the playing track info area

if you start looking for other songs, and you forget the key of the playing song it's a true hasstle to get it again (search the song all over again)

...and in the same topic: add 'key' field to 'browse' function....should be very easy

What ever happened to having a good ear for sound?
I got to say that this is taking things a bit too far surley? If you can't work out if tunes go together what sort of DJ are you?
Surley inbuilt effects or rewire capabilities would be more useful to expand creativity when playing live?
djchrischip 10:54 PM - 21 June, 2009
+1 on key analyzing function on analyzing files (make it a check mark like auto bpm n what not)

I remember I once heard i think it was Z-Trip or something say, a good dj is on top of new technology. Use what ever you can to take your mixing to the next level.

Don't take it for granted but don't shrug it off either. I remember when I told myself I wouldn't use anything but real vinyl. If you want to be a purist, ditch the computer, but I say use it all as much as you can.

My only workaround for nice harmonic info while mixing was to put the Key in Number form at the beginning of the track name.

This means I can no longer sort the track alphabetically, but as more and more of my music was coming from Beatport in WAV format, it wasn't so much of an issue for me.

This means I get Key info big and clear for both decks, sample player etc and can easily sort by Key.

It would have been nice if it was there a year or two ago when I ditched iTunes and fully sorted my library in SL.

On another note the "Search Hierarchy" thing is a much needed time-saver! + 10000000
