Hey all. My friend is fascinated with Serato, and is hell-bent on buyin it. We regularly spin together, and would like to use the same computer with SSL. Does he just need to bring his external hard drive and we're golden, or what? I have a mac Powerbook and his external drive is used by his PC. Is there going to be problems if I'm in the mix and then he plugs in his external drive? Is it gonna skip, or cut out? DO overviews get saved with the file, or will i have to build new overviews for his mp3s on my computadora?

How does SSL read a new external drive(just plugged in), while I'm currently mixing with SSL? Does it show up on the sidebar? COuld someone explain this to me? thanks.

Yep.

Make sure the ext. drive has a filesystem which both systems can deal with like FAT32.

It will automatically add all the crates to the left side where the crate list is.

And will do so only with "spare" CPU cycles, after it's done all the work needed to keep your mix playing.

OK how bout if we have 3 Djs... SHould we all just buy a little adapter and connect all the externals to it? I only have 2 USB ports on my mac, so that means only one is free because the SSL uses one of em.

We tried yesterday to get it goin, i guess it reads teh external files from the "*ALL" playlist right? If I load Itunes and all the Itunes Music folders, will playlists from Itunes be exported into SSL when the external is plugged in? That would be sweet. I genreally build smart playlists in Itunes and when I'm in SSL it reads em licketty-split... I would love to keep that going if posible.

itunes playlist is a problem in your case, cause you cant store the iTunes playlist on an external drive, attach it to a different laptop and expect iTunes to get the playlist correct, which means SSL cant get them correct either. You have to use SSL crates.

I dont know what you mean. What do you want to connect where?
Harddrive H, PC A, PC B, PC C. Please draw a little diagram.

nik, I think I am understanding you correctly on this....

A work around for me would be to set up SSL on my desktop. Open it up before I play and open each smartplaylist (within SSL) and copy the entire playlist into a new crate. When I switch the external HD over to the laptop, I would then be able to basically use my same playlists, only I would be viewing them through crates. Does this sound like it will work, how do I make sure the crates get stored on the external HD?

I would try right now, but it will be a few days before I get everything organized on my computers to try.

goodie

Correct.

Good question. Safest way is to copy all crates files over to your ext drive. MAke sure you use exactly the same folderstructure as on your internal drive concerning your music files.
MrGoodie2shoes 2:58 PM - 4 January, 2006
nik, can you give me an example of what you mean by the same folder structure and how I would do that?
MrGoodie2shoes 2:59 PM - 4 January, 2006
and, is this assuming I am running SSL off of the hard drive and not the internal drive?
nik39 3:24 PM - 4 January, 2006
Internal drive:

C:/music/2006/january/crap-music/dirty-south/chingy-bla.mp3

External drive:

NOT:

E:/january/crap-music/dirty-south/chingy-bla.mp3

but

E:/music/2006/january/crap-music/dirty-south/chingy-bla.mp3

It doesnt matter where you run SSL from (I assuem you mean the SSL program file?) its important where your libraries are.

got it, you the man nik
MrGoodie2shoes 3:47 PM - 4 January, 2006
sent last one a little too soon....

I am keeping all my mp3's on my external drive, I won't have any mp3's for ssl on any internal drives, so it is just the crates that I need to save correctly to the external correct?

I am on a Mac so what I am doing is this:
Desktop --- Music>ScratchLIVE>crates
External HD -- Music>ScratchLIVE>crates

Do I need to copy that iTunes folder with teh .xml file as well? So it would look like this?
Desktop --- Music>iTunes>iTunes Music Library.xml
External HD -- Music>ScratchLIVE>iTunes Music Library.xml

thanks again

As you cant use itunes (AFAIk, there might be a solution, but I haven understood it yet, waiting for Wes_wes's post) the location of the XML file shouldnt matter.
