I need suggestions on organizing my library....

Ok, so i gave into the force and went mac. i know vsl on pc should be around shortly, and i'm sure it'll work well, but right now, i need to get paid and get this video thing rollin. thanks to sixxx, swift and all the other fools who made me come out of the closet and go mac!

so yesterday was the first day i've ever used a mac...the last time i used one was in 1984, and that was playing Oregon Trail on my apple2e. after spending all night navigating and getting used to the layout, i'm ready to start oranizing my mp3's and videos. i want to avoid redoing my library twice, so thats why i wanna know your suggestions, so i can hopefully just do this one time. sixxx was helpful and showed me some stuff utilizing itunes as my way of organizing, but wanted to see what you mac guys thought.
just to give you an idea of how i currently have my music organized on my pc....on my C drive, i have a folder named MUSIC, then within that folder are subfolders labeled RAP, HOUSE, OLD SCHOOL etc.
i'm trying to look at my options, especially for videos, and see if theres a more efficient way to organize on a mac.
any suggestions is appreciated!

I just do playlists in itunes. You can do for audio and video.

I have iTunes organize my music for me. If you do this you will lose the genre folders. That is how I prefer it, but I have gotten used to all my music in one folder by artist. Searching through spotlight is a very quick way to find what you are looking for without browsing folders.

With iTunes organizing my files, I have to 'consolidate my library' regularly. This is in the advanced menu. Basically I have one folder (which is now now on an external) with all my tunes in it. As I download new music, it all goes into my download folder. I tag it and label right, then hit consolidate. After that I copy my entire iTunes music folder on another external for a complete back-up of my library.

Tagging can be an issue. I also strip all my files of all ID3 tags by 'converting tags to none' Then convert to ID3 V2.3. Then label. I have spent lots of time labeling, then convert tags only to have all my info revert to what was there originally.

If you don't have iTunes organize for you, you risk getting "!" next to your files if they ever get moved.

"!" is no good.

congrats on the new computer.

Whoa...Oregon Trail. That brings back memories.

Congrats on the Mac. I personally use iTunes for everything also. As far as my video files, I create crates in V-SL since you can't get the bpm's for video files in iTunes.
