Dj-ing without turntables with TTM 57sl

Hello to all,
Long story short, I could not practice with my turntables (too much space taken).
So I began yesterday (3/08/2008) to mess around with my 57 only. I wanted to get better with it. I started using things I never used before on the mixer and wanted to see if i could rock a party without turtables. Normally I use two 3500's to mix and blend practice. So far i have been able to mix and do everything besides turntable tricks (scrathing and other stuff). If push came to shove i believe that i could do a party without turntables(broken tables and so on). Has any one messed around with this idea yet? If you had a party to do and one of your tables went down could you pull it off without a backup table? I have always been afraid of equipment going down during a major event. Im pretty sure the 57 will stand alone and complete the mission. By the way it works better than the turntables.

Thanks for the info guys. But tonight im taking it a step further and mixing with no turntables. So far mixing with no tables has been perfect. I know that certain veteran DJ's would not call it DJ-ing but if push came to shove I would not miss out on making that money at least. I just got to get used to the buttons and rearrange them to fit my style. I also need some of that spray to clean my buttons with. Anyway If someone would ask me how to start DJ-ing, I would tell them to buy the TTM-57sl first. It is definitely a stand alone money making machine. it is also fun to learn and play around with to build your mixer side of DJ-ing, which I believe is very important.

It's funny..I just used my TTM-57 for the first time for my radio show this past Tuesday without turntables, so for my first night out I had to MASTER "Group 1, 2 AND 3"! But everything went off without a hitch and I was DETERMINED not to touch my laptop!! Eventually, I had to once or twice, but I was for the most part able to search for songs, set cue points, and start and stop tracks with the mixer (in ABS mode, of course!) Saturday will be the debut with turntables and im thinking that will be a lot easier!!!

yeah, I was forced to do it last night. My 57 wouldn't pick up a control signal from my 1200's!! No problem, that's why I brought ONE CDJ800 as a back-up, WRONG!! It still had a very small signal, but not enough to move the waveform. So I had to play in INT for a minute to diagnose what's wrong. Then I had to just hook straight into my powered Tapco Thump 15(love em:) just so I could reboot the 57 and my lappy. Still didn't work so I had to play without TT's. Then all of a sudden 20 minutes later one TT started working! Then 15 minutes later the other was fine! This is the first time Serato has let me down and I was sweating like a fat rat in front of the crowd! Everything was all good in the end.

i still believe mixing with no dex... (ie: just internal with the 57.) would be so much more do-able and user friendly if the pitch control was asignable to the joysticks

The 57 internal controls are fine for a backup plan...but not as fun as vinyl IMO. Working with vinyl is really the who reason I went with Serato in the first place, so I won't be dropping the decks anytime soon. On a related note, a DJ here is Madison has been rockin sets for about 3 weeks using nothing but keyboard hotkeys and an SL1.

I now bring my Akai MPD-24 to all my gigs. It cost less than $200 and with midi you can assign internal pitch control to the faders on the Akai. It saved my ass when there was a power issue at one of my regular spots.

that is a good idea Phil Anthony. I will look into that mpd-24 also. Right now I just use the p1 and p2 knobs to adjust my pitch bend and bpm's. They work better than my Denon 3500's. And with the key lock feature the music mixes in almost flawless. Cant wait to start using music videos so i can test them also. Now that i am satisfied with any turntable backup issues, i now have to figure out what else could go wrong during a set. Maybe another laptop standing by in sleep mode? Cant think of anything else. If you guys can think of something else then it would be helpful to the forum.
