I DJ Records, got a Mac book pro Version 10.7.4 (not listed above) I want to DJ with a friend who has Serato. And try it out. I think his is Rane SL3. I downloaded Scratch Live 2.4.1. I am not hooked up to his equipment yet and wanted to get ready/Practice.
What do I need?
How do I see the window with the two decks?
Some of my files are recorded from records using GoldWave on a PC. And it is reading corrupted, and I don't hear sound on those files, (When I drag them into the one deck) but others 'do' play and are recorded the same way. Some are Wav. Some are Mp3
I'm already pretty confused and new at this, please show mercy!

Hi Old School 45,

I see that you are pretty new, so I will try to be as descriptive as i can :)

You can not use all the features of Serato Scratch Live without being connected to the Rane SL box, this is just how it works. If you try to start up Scratch Live on your computer without any hardware connected you will get the 'Offline Player".

You can not DJ in the offline player, it is only used for djs to reference their songs, build up playlists and check where the cue points are.

To enable all the features of Scratch Live, and for you to get the 2 deck (or 4 deck) window so you can dj/mix, you need to be connected to your friends Rane SL 3.

Now, about those corrupt files. You were saying that some are MP3 and some are WAV, can you pick up a pattern on which files keep corrupting? Is it always the MP3's or always the WAVs?

Sometimes the program (Goldwave) can save the file in a weird format that Scratch Live might not be able to read. If you have a song that is corrupted, send it through to me (you can attach it on this thread) and I will check it out to see what the problem is :)

Hope this gives you an idea on Scratch Live!

Feel free to ask any questions you may have and I will try my best to answer them!

Cheers :)

45, I am new to this too! There are good guys in here that will help out.
BUUUT you have to use that little box on the top right corner that says SEARCH.
I have been reading a lot of post that I found by using that search box. This digital stuff is confusing at first but with little patience and a lot of reading you will get it....

Thank you for responding!! Just looked back and forth to see, It's only the WAV files, not the MPEG files, I left most of them WAV because it sounds a little better, is there a way to play them in Scratch Live? or do I have to convert each one, losing sound quality? Thanks again

I think you mean MP3, not MPEG. MPEG is a video file!

There shouldn't be a audible difference if your MP3s are recorded at a high quality.

For MP3's you would want to record them at 256kbps or higher. 320kbps is the recommended bitrate.

My guess is that your program (Goldwave) didn't encode the file correctly and Scratch Live is struggling to read them. Unfortunately you will need to re record these WAV's as they sound like they are corrupted.

However, did you know that Scratch Live can record from your vinyl records as well? You can record your entire record collection using Scratch Live's "RECORD" plugin.
Just put your vinyl on the turntable, press record, then when you are finished the song stop recording and then you can save it to your Library! It is a very easy to use feature and great for archiving all your records!

Scratch Live will save these files as .AIFF files so they will work perfectly with Scratch Live.

Hope this is of help to you!
Let me know if you have any other questions :)

Cheers

Hey Old School,
If you use iTunes to convert those WAVE files into AIFF. Serato will work better for you. AIFF will not be compressed like MP3 so you can still be happy with the sound.

Thanks for the suggestions! yeah when I click on INFO in I Tunes it says my Mp3's are MPEG-1,layer 3, but they play fine. How can I convert my WAV files in ITunes to AIFF? Thanks

Oh yes sorry you are correct, MPEG-1 Layer 3 are MP3 files, I thought you were talking about another type of file. Sorry for the confusion.

As for converting a WAV to AIFF using iTunes, check out these few threads I found:

Let me know if this works for you :)
