Anybody using Ableton Live and 57

treeo730 5:05 AM - 7 January, 2008
Hello all... thinking of incorporating Live into my sets. Anybody using ableton with the 57? Just want to know how it's working for you and how do you have this setup?

Yes it's Awesome!!!

I have been working with Ableton and the 57. I had some problems with the 57's ASIO drivers, so I am now working with the ASIO4ALL drivers. No problems here, although I have to set the latency to a value that is a little bit higher than I would wish (512 samples on a Dell Latitude 820, 1GB of RAM, hard drive is too full at the moment).

Good luck!

BTW, I would love to see the possibility to record directly (pre-fader) from the MIC input...

How do you guys have this setup? It seems like your running it off a PC. I have a PC and mac laptop so I would like to use either or. Sometimes the wifey takes over the macbook.

I just think Live is going to take Djing to a new level and now with video on the 57...we should be able to charge double$$$.

Just to make clear: you can only use the 57 as a 2 in 2 out soundcard, nothing less, nothing more. Don't expect to be able to scratch live clips with your Serato interface (at least for now :-) )

I'm just curious as how are people using Live and the 57 during a live mix. As far as a soundcard I have a 002 system for that...i/o's for days.....

If you have the patience and creativity of learning how to work these 2 Programs together i would say if your not, you're definitely missing out on a whole new dimension in DJ'n and/or VJ'n for that matter. Live remixing and remashing at your finger tips. Alot of Pre-Game set-up. The beauty of Ableton Live is in the eye of the beholder. No 2 DJ's and/or VJ's setup would be alike. Once you understands it's full potential, Ableton Live is unbelievable. I suggest this program for anyone advanced enough to understand it and use it too it's full potential.

Just wanted to let you know I came across this:

I thought this might help people searching these forums

YEah I use it in my shows with a motu ultralite as the soundcard running my 57 back in to live but it would be good if I could just use the 57 as both soundcards?
Dont see that happenin any time soon though!

hmm. I wondering if this would work with the new pro tools usb piece. I was thinking of picking one of those up anyway. I'm going to do my research.
treeo730 4:23 PM - 10 January, 2008
hey dizz, thats a nice set by the way
treeo730 4:06 AM - 13 January, 2008
Hey Dizz how do you have it connected. I was thinking of picking up a Mbox.. I'm just curious how many outs do you need and how do you route it back into the 57. I assume the aux... The reason I want a mbox is because I already have a 002 and use pro tools, but don't want to lug around a 002.
Dizz 10:12 AM - 13 January, 2008
theres 2 ways to do it.
I use ableton to loop stuff so I run the outs of the 57 into the ins of the soundcard and then the card to the FOH.
The other way to use it would be to run the outs of the soundcard into the spare channel on ya mixer (in this case Im only using 1 deck so you could put it into the channel 1 or if its being used by a deck then Aux in).
Only prob with aux in is no fader cut or fx send capabilities...
Another prob with the mbox is its latency.
If you try to use midi with it it is real apparent compared to other soundcards (I use the motu ultralite).
Hope this helps.
Peace

thanks good info. I didn't even think about the latency on the mbox, I'll have to do some research and see if the mbox pro has that issue, since it is running on a firewire? The motu piece looks nice. There is also the metric halo which people have nothing but good things to say. I could technically send the outs of the soundcard to the line in on the 57 and just switch my input on top from A to D as I need. I think that sounds right. Hmmm going to have to see what other Dj are doing.. The thing is most are probably running on a DJM mixer or at least 3 channels. Thanks again for help.

question why couldn't you send the signal from whatever sound card into the other line input instead of the aux... sorry i'm new to this..the live portion. Also sonce were on the topic.. I was looking at the mbox pro but now the apogee duet looks nice.. some workarounds from what I hear

You can!
Only thing is you can only have 1 deck running if you do that so if you need 2 decks you might want to use the aux.
Yeah the apogee looks perfect!
Get that one for sure! (m box 2 isnt much better for latency)

Well I checked into the Apogee and the only way to work for Live would be to use the aggregate function? I've never used it and it seems like it may be too complicated.. Too bad would have been nice to have an apogee piece. SO it looks like I'm stuck with the mbox pro.

M audio FireWire 410 works great and if you have the pioneer efx 1000 u can even midi sync ableton and scratch live to stay in time with one another. Same I/O as Dizz mentioned in the above post.

Thanks for all the feedback guys.. I think I am going to go with the Mbox Pro though. The Motu piece looks nice and I wish the apogee had more outputs but for audio editing pro tools is till the easiest and the most comprehensive. With that being said, sorry for the dumb question, but where on the 57 would I connect the cue mix. My setup is the 57 two turntables and I will be getting a cdj400. So I will have all three connected and then I assume I will have the mbox out connected to the 57 line so I can just use the top input selction to go between the four...right??? so then where does the cue mix get connected??? or do I just have to get a second pair of headphones and use the headphone out of my mbox pro?? Another question is can I actually run the mbox since it is a soundcard and won't the ttm need to be the soundcard to be used in SSL. Sorry I'm just confused and I want to get this right. I tried the digi forums but no help there, not too many dj's I guess hanging around there.

I'd set it up like this:

2 TTs and CDJs into your line inputs (you would need to use the line switcher to access your CDJ and you wouldn't be able to play all three at once).

Mbox outs into your Aux line-in (note you won't be able to use the 57 effects routed to the Aux if you do this).

Booth or Aux outs from the 57 back into the Mbox inputs so you can sample and loop yourself on the fly in ableton.

the 57 only acts as a soundcard when Live is off. Once you launch the SSL, it converts to being the DAC for Scratch Live and only Scratch Live.

Hey Dj soo thanks for the advice. I'm going to get everything setup in the next week. I actaully just cut my studio in half. Damn I had over a grand of monster cables.....
