Bought a 57 Yesterday = Worst Night Ever

I broke down yesterday and bought a 57. It is THE most complicated mixer ever. Why are the effects so difficult to use? Is there a quick / easy way to set up just echo? Going from a 909 to this, the non-lit controls on the mixer make me miss the 909 in a dark club. I hit cue points at the wrong times so much that I stopped using the mixer outside of crossfading/ scratching. No scrolling, no cue points. The manual is complicated as hell too... Arrrrgh... I need help before I return this joint... I dont know where to start.

You can set up the FX to route to the flexFX button (making it a "push one button" affair) check the User wiki for tips and trick on the ttm 57

Agreed, when I first got the mixer it was mad intimidating. What I did for about 2 weeks, was just use it as a stand alone mixer (and just access SSL though the keyboard).
Slowly I got used to the mixer's Serato controls and now that's all I use.
Give it sometime, shit you only had it for one day.
You won't regret buying this mixer.

My advice take your time and go through the manual.....You'll find that you can set different controls to each group....the mixer is so versatile...but it will not come overnight it will take time....as any other good product.

Yeah, definitly take the time. You can't just buy the mixer and then get the full potential after using it for one day... A little patience my friend :)
However I agree... the EFX section could be easier.

My advice it to buy a little light to mount above the mixer. It totally sucks to use in the dark.

yep... I still have my DJM-909... but the 57SL is way wicked easy to use... I am even messing with the Video Plugin...
I would give it at least a week of real work with it before dumping it. I love how simple it is to use and setup compared to Traktor Scratch and Torq.

Man... Thanks fellas... What's the purpose of the group thing? I don't get it. I've been reading my manual like I'm back in college studying for a test. I don't fully get how to route the effects to the FlexFX deal... I thought that was for an external effects processor?
I know I was an idiot to assume I could use it out of the box. I traded in my 909 for it to cut costs, so I was kinda stuck. THEN... I don't understand how to switch back from the effects to the normal SSL control so I can scroll and load tracks. Arrrggh... I'm with you Rebel... I need a light asap. I have stickers on it to remind me of functions. It's so technical.

My 12 year old son uses it almost every day and he understands it very well.
If a 12 year old can understand it, I think you can too.

Go to Group six. Push Aux Button. I think its A3 in the cue buttob section. Turn on effects. B3 on the cue Button section. Go to group 1. Now when you mix you hit the Flrx Fx Button and you now have effects. The only problem is you can't use the mic.

Thanks Rebel... I'm gonna try it today. As long as I remember to turn off the effects when I use the mic I should be okay right?

Yea, read the manual and you'll get it.
You can also call the guys at Rane and they'll help you out over the phone.
We called and they helped my son understand effects.
Good luck,

Here's something to think about... Were you able to use the 909 to it's fullest potential out of the box on the first night??? There is no way I would use either a 909 or 57 at a gig straight out of the box in a way other than just a regular mixer until I had the chance to read up and play with the extended features of either. give it a chance... Although not the most user friendly out of the box, it will become your best friend when using it with Serato. I do agree regarding the effects however... not the easiest or best in my opinion... but the rest of the features rock.

2:31 AM - 8 January, 2008
Yeah... True, but the learning curve for the 909 was waaaay smaller. But both are dope mixers, but it does take time. The rest of the features are ridiculous. I have to get used to the fader being so light though.

Yea, we've moved the fader accidentally many times. Sometimes it moves from barely touching it with my shirtsleeve.

Agreed, So I've learned over the years to always keep your volume/up fader down on the side you're cuing. That way even if the X fader is in the middle no accidental sounds comes out (guess that's obvious, right?)
Only when it's time to actually mix, or scratch in the next song do you bring up the volume fader with hand on X fader ready to do your thing.
I even did this with my old Vestax 07 and it's X fader wasn't as touchy as the TTM 57
It's just a matter of getting into the habit of mixing that way.

^^ True... I've never mixed that way but I'll have to from now on. Does anyone else think its harder to cut with a lighter fader than with a heavier one like the 909? Simple patterns I could do before seem a little harder now because the fader is so sensitive. But I think it'll make me a little faster when I go back to a regular fader.

The fader takes some getting used to, but it's the best one I've come across by far.
It's Mad smooth doing twiddles & crabs,... the fader just bounces so nice.
Since the cut in is so tight there is no tolerance for sloppy cuts, so if your fader hand work isn't on point it'll defiantly show in the scratches, but hey that'll force you to become a better scratcher right?

i agree. 57 is difficult to learn. effects are soo complicated to use on that thing. the only effect i use is nik39's echo trick on that wiki if i dont have my efx-1000 around. other effects are just too hard to get to while mixing. thats why i got the pioneer efx. not only is it good and easy to use like the effects on 909.. its also bright!! 57 aint too fun in a dark club. if u think fader is a problem... just dont miss the eqs and hit the scroll button.. loaded a new song by accident once.

Dayum... I think if you check "lock playing deck" the scroll knob won't load a new song. I think, but I haven't tried it yet.

The first night I bought the mixer it was very overwhelming. All these buttons to press and a new interface. My brother has the 909 and in my opinion the 57 is on a different level. Don’t get me wrong the 909 efx is on point but no one can beat the 57’s rugged design and faders. Use Nik’s method on the one button efx and you should be set. Also if you take time to program each group you will be glad you spent that cash. The 57 is for the advanced user and be happy you can go to a gig and represent the best mixer on the planet.

I remember the first night I used the 57 I got the echo effect stuck "on" and couldn't figure out how to turn it off. Talk about embarrassing. I had to power it off/on.
FastForward to a year later (now), I can work all the effects on the fly, have customized groups, don't need light to see what I'm doing, and am taking advantage of features I never would have previously thought and/or cared about.

That trick for using the FlexFM button to trigger the echo effect is great. Is there a way to lock the BPM of the effect to the opposite turntable you are triggering on, or do you have to always do this manually? The manual is a bit light on detailed filter information?

Another question for those who have had their 57 for a minute... I noticed that on both edges of crossfader, the spring (or something) keeps the fader from closing all the way. So even after I've closed the fader, it pops back open just enough to hear everything on the deck I'm back cueing. So while doubling up for example I can hear EVERYTHING I'm cueing because I have the contour set to "fast". Is this normal?

I am boycotting the 57SL.
I am an Australian dj, and I battle with a Vestax 06Pro and 2x Technics 1200s.
I bought Scratch Live in order to digital edit and scratch video, which I have been waiting for long before I heard the original release date of July 2007.
I am outraged that Rane and Serato would stab me in the back. They have monopolised the software deliberately, and I have discussed this for some time with them personally. They should show some loyalty to those that invested in the original Scratch Live unit, instead of trying to line their own pockets. If I had known that they would do this I would have stuck to my vinyl.
It would have saved me time, effort, and money that I spent changing my OS.
NO Linux support? Yeah Thanks. Not to mention buying a multimedia hub to record.
I hope you're happy, you've opened the door for every try-hard with a dvd collection. So much for preparation or experience.
If everyone has to use the same equipment, then how is anyone going to do anything different or original? If you can't manage video with the industry standard, then you shouldn't be a dj, let alone a vjay. The 57SL are a gimmick, and Rane mixers are for amateurs.
If I find a way to scratch video files without Video-SL, I will make this information as public as humanly possible. Once again, I am boycotting the 57SL, and anyone that wants to join me: post here, or email serato directly.
Rane, Serato. The customer is always right, and we want Video-SL too. You don't even have to change it, just release it without the 57SL.

the rane 57 is the best mixer out. trust me i used all of them. rane has great warranty and quality is great. i wouldnt install in a club because dummy always break stuff. but for a real turntablist and dj who used serato you cant get any fresher these days. until something next coes out the 57 is fa and away ahead of other options.

What's funny is I didn't even buy the 57 because of wanting video. That's just an extra bonus. To me the 57 is the best mixer I've ever used. The feel is second to none... the sound is incredible... and the features of integrating Serato into it was the final selling point for me. I've used and owned many different mixers before including Vestax and can say the Rane is superior. So for someone to be bitching about boycotting the 57 because of video is retarded... With that mind set are you going to boycott Apple PowerBooks as well since you'll require a video port and Macs come with one, but another like Toshiba does not? Certain features will require certain hardware... period... don't like it??? Then go use a competing product. But your argument for a boycott is flawed in my opinion...
