New Macbook Pro Laptop to be purchased...

Hello all,
I have been wanting to upgrade my current laptop (Older Macbook Pro, Core 2 duo, 2.5 Gz, 512mb Video Card) with a newer Matte Screen 17inch Macbook Pro.)
Now, my previous Macbook Pro, one that I owned before the one listed above, had the defective X1600 video card. Anything strenuous on the video card would cause the machine to lock up.
I have been looking at the i7 processor MBP, either the ones containing the 512MB or 1024MB video card. Is there any Macbook Pro of the "i" family line that I should avoid or stay away from. I would hate to spend over $1000 on a new laptop to have the video /computer freeze up after a years worth of use.
Thanks all!

If I was you, I'd wait until the WWDC conference in June 11-15 where apple will release the new macbook line with its "Ivy Bridge" processors which have a better GPU.

That's the catch, the CPU/GPU may be better, but one of the good things about the current body style is that you can have 2 internal HDDs. The new ones might be too thin. Either way once the new line comes out I am sure there will be refurbs at the apple store of this current style for a few months.

Thanks for the feedback! I probably will wait until the new ones drop, to buy a 2010/2011 i5/i7 Macbook Pro. Something about the dedicated video card, along with the extra Hard drive space by removing the optical drive makes sense to me.
I would not be surprised to see apple turn the Macbook pro line into a bunch of large Macbook Air's.
I was just curious if anyone with the i5/i7 MBP's had issues with their video card, overheating, etc. I know there was an issue with Serato & the 32 bit/64bit mode, but that was resolved with a boot selection i believe.

I've had no issue with the video cards or overheating in either of my i7 MacBook Pros.
The 32-bit mode applies to using the TTM57 mixer with versions of Scratch Live before 2.3. The computer will not detect the mixer if booted into 64-bit mode and a pre-2.3 vrersion of SL is used. I'm still using SL 2.2 and the 32-bit mode with the TTM57 mixer works just fine.
If you don't need a new computer *right now* it *always* pays to wait...though I'd add that if Apple indeed "Airs" the whole MacBook Pro line in a way that makes a second internal hard drive impossible, and gets rid of the 17-inch version as is "rumored", there may be quite a demand for remaining stock of the 2011 models.

Well said Mark,
I for certain would be one in demand for a 17in. Been running 15 inch. up until now, and can't wait for extra screen real estate.
Thanks for the feedback!

Don't forget the extra USB port, too.
I've been toying with the idea of getting a refurbished late 2011 Macbook myself. But between the post from DJMark (serato.com) and this one I think I'm going to wait until after they announce the new models.
If they don't Air-ify them then I might snag a new one. If they do and they turn out to be bad for video dj-ing then I'll get a late 2011 refurb at (hopefully) a discounted price and throw Snow Leopard on it.

The extra usb power is just hubbed of the 2nd one. But the express card slot and the better video card :) now that's so worth it. I have the 2011 MBP 17 and its amazing (and i have 2 HD's in the computer). And most of all screen real-estate is amazing! Its flawless at the moment. I want to find out if i can do 16gb of ram in it though. Its only $140 for 16gb. It wouldn't hurt.

by running 32 bit mode would I lose out having 8gb of ram?

I am looking to get a 17"MB Pro
get the highest processor available
Put 16 gb of ram in it
\have dual 750 gb internal SSD drives
however I want to still keep 1.9.2 and serato video
Is it possible to still use the sl1 and 57 with the full 16 gb of ram in 32 bit mode?

Short answer...a 32-bit operating system can only address up to 4GB of RAM.
Serato Video should run fine with just 4GB. You'll want to make sure it has a dedicated video card though.
