I'm currently in ROK but not because of martial purposes. How is it like being an Army DJ? Is there anything unique or different?

Cool thread. I am also in the Army. I am not deployed in Afghanistan. I know there are a lot of DJs in the Army just that they probably don't log into serato.com.

DJ'd in the army for most of my army career. Im out now and strangley I had more gigs when I was in the army cause I knew way more people. DJing in the army is fun. You get your whole unit to come support your night get drunk and have blast. Some of my best gigs was pcking the club full of soldiers and turning that place upside down....

I think he goes by DJ Will (last name Williams). What makes a real DJ? Someone who actually mixes the music and not just play the next song when one ends.

Haha... he didnt do anything special, just that he mixes well and scratches a little bit. Ok, so what I am trying to say, we have plenty people out here that say they DJ, but when I meet them all they do is play the whole song and when it ends they play the next one... That's what I call a double click DJ.. So, if they actually use turntable or CDJs or MIDI controllers I consider them a DJ, regardless of they level of expertise... They might be categorized as a sucky DJ or a plain good DJ... Makes sense?

I spent 10 years in the National Guard and it seemed that no matter what weekend our drills were scheduled - I had a gig. It was hard trying to run a weekend business when Uncle Sam wanted the same weekends! I also had to rebuild the business after my deployment. I lost a lot of contacts and regular clients. A little bit of work and some good networking got me back in the game.

I have been in 23 years and I have to start all over every 2 to 3 years every time I move, not to mention deployments. Some how I make it work, Its hard in the beginning to break into a new area with established DJs that dont want to help or advise you. But thats what makes the challenge that much better. Most of the time some of the DJs dont have the experience or the equipment to match me so they usually come back. After starting all over in VA I have to move to Texas and start all over again. I have already changed my Facebook page and website to reflect Texas and I already have 2 gigs in the area. Its hard work but somebody has to do it.

I was in Germany for a 3 week training mission back in '96. On our off night, we stopped into a club called Pacha in Munich. I went up to request a song and the DJ gave me the headphones and a crate full of records and told me to mix while he went to the bathroom. About 30-45 minutes later he came back and took over again. I held my own and had a blast. It turns out he was from Florida on an overseas DJ circuit!

I was stationed on Fort Wainwright from 2004-2007.
I DJ'd at the refinery a few times. Is that place still open. I also got to play at the Blue Loon which is probably the best place to party in that sad excuse of town.

Army 1979-2005, then did 3 more years with them on special projects Middle East. My father is also retired Army First SGT. Went to HS in Germany in the 70's and DJed HS and Community events (what got me started).
DJed while assigned to Germany from 1985-1989. Was deployed overseas every other year after Desert Storm, till retirement (so not much time for music during those years). The Army allowed me to fly nine different helicopters over my 26 plus years including the Cobra and Apache, wouldn't change my life for nothing!
Retired a Cheif Warrant Officer Five, so am well taken care of, which allows me to be very particualar about what gigs I do (just call me a hobby DJ), but I love the music and people.
This seems to be a pretty cool site, I have been on four others for almost two years and this one has a little different perspective, which I like and is refreshing :)
