auto back up for external mac drives..need some help..

canicypher 5:45 AM - 15 April, 2012
What's the best way to back up my external hard drives?! I have a 1 - 1TB g drive (current drive I gig with), 1 - 2TB g drive (bought today, not open yet) and a 3TB WD (main back up).

The 1TB is filled up and I'm using about 190GB on my Macbook's HD with video files. My plan is to dump everything on the 2 TB and use that to gig with and use the 1 TB as is for a back up gig drive. I then want to mirror the 2TB on the 3TB as a main back up of everything..

How should i go about doing this?! Will Time Machine help?! (i don't care about backing up the macbook HD) I just want the two externals the same and anytime i make a change to the 2 TB whether it is adding new tracks or changing around folders it will automatically do the same to the 3 TB.

Any suggestions/preferred methods/etc are welcomed..

Get a copy of Super Duper to clone your gig drive onto your back up drive. It will only change files and folders that have been changed/added since the last back-up, so it's quick and easy.

Time machine won't really help if you want to take out your back-up drive for a gig in an emergency.

Yeah, Super Duper or Carbon Copy Cloner...

After you have done the initial back up, how long does it take to do the incremental back up? (apart from data size, etc) ? Are we talking a few minutes or hours?
DJ DisGrace 4:51 PM - 16 April, 2012
a few minutes, depends on how many changes there have been, obviously.... I used SATA external drives and it was always under 10 minutes

is it ok to use eSata external drive hook ups when using SSL and video files...i feel like i remember hearing somewhere sometime that it wasn't?! dk why..just thought i heard that somewhere lol

^ I only used the eSATA for backups on my desktop PC (using MacDrive)... for gigs it's the FW800 jack

Yeah so don't use that connection to actually perform a set with is what I was saying..
DJMark 7:51 AM - 17 April, 2012
eSATA would probably work okay...it's just there's some issues:

1) Can't use bus-power;

2) eSATA cables are more of a pain to use than FW800 (less flexible);

3) You need to use an Expresscard/34 eSATA adapter;

4) Even DJ-ing videos, the real-world benefit of eSATA over FW800 is pretty minor. FW800 has way more than enough bandwidth to do anything most DJ's (video or not) will be doing.

5) I feel that FW800 offers a more secure, solid connection for "mobile" use than eSATA.

I use Chronosync as well. I make a complete clone of the HD I use strictly for DJing (Has all my crates, music, database, backup of program files, etc) Back it up about once a week.
