Streaming Video Mix Sets - What Are You Using?

DJ_Gonzo 11:59 PM - 3 April, 2012
Well...I've just about had it with the free version of UStream showing all the ads. I'm not upset at them for doing it....after all, they are offering a free streaming service. I am not up for paying a large fee with them.

I'm now using Dacast. You can stream live with them without your viewers being interrupted with advertisements. I am paying a monthly fee with them, though you do not have to, so I can have more bandwidth each day. I am loving their service.

What I need is an encoder that is capable of streaming a second monitor for my Video Mixes. The encoder needs to be used with Mac OS.

What are you all using and or recommend?

Thanks.

If I understand correctly you need a program to capture the output from your 2nd screen? I would use Camtwist. You can do multiple webcams/desktop and a bunch of other stuff. Plus they have a studio interface to help you do transitions.

Camtwist to capture, then use w/e encoder DaCast provides (if they provide any), or Flash Media Encoder. Wirecast is a pretty good tool if you are willing to shell out the $400 for it, its what the Ustream Producer is based on.

Ill have to try Dacast to compare. Im with you, UStream seems a little ad intense, and the fact the users are required to sign up to chat - lame. I've used StickAM and its a mixed bag as well Easy chat feature, but quality really blows. It does have a built in audience, but seems like unless you pay the grip rate - you might as well be on chat roulette.

I have also gone extreme and setup my own Windows Media Server - the new one is pretty good and you can now stream to iPhones. The pluses are you dont have any commercials but the downfall is no Flash support (as they are competitors) A Flash Media server is SOOO damn expensive - its not worth it.

I think a good model that might work is have both a Ustream and Windows Media Server stream at the same time - then you could send standard users over to Ustream and "signed up" people to the WMS for a high quality/no commercial option.

We are toying with this - but seems like there is never enough time to implement it

I tell my ustreamers to use Mozilla Firefox + Adblock Plus (add-on) = no more adds

Interesting. I'm gonna have to try that.

I incorporates Dacast into my web page and I also stream to ustream at the same time. Seems to work well so far. Dacast has a built in chat feature that I've figured out.

Thanks guys for the advice on Mozilla Firefox + Adblock Plus (add-on).

Tested it out for 10 minutes and no ads. ;-)

Livestream seems to be the absolute best these days for control, quality & consistency

yeah E is right, but starting back from scratch to build on audience or import the followings from ustream is not possible unfortunately. wish I had started on Livestream a few years back.

DJ Gonzo,
If you want I will set you up a test Flash Media Server and you will have total control.
