Video Encoding??

Question, I have beem using VSL for as long as it has been around, and now going to Serato Video! Just wondering if I need to Encode my videos using handbrake or some other encoder? I download almost all of my videos from 8th wonder and Im curious if encoding all of these videos will make for better performance? I had no problems with VSL, but once I have switched to Itch, Numark NS6, and Serato Video.....seems to be peaking the limiter from time to time upon loading. Just wondering if you guys encode or reencode every video you download, or is it only necessary to reencode the ones that dont play correctly?

You should ask VJ Justin Allen, he knows what's up. He's on here a lot and is the man.

This is mostlikely your problem. The encoding at 8th is very inconsistent from one editor to the next. Re-encoding may help with some of the files (i.e. ones with no keyframes) but otherwise you will just lose quality. Try using videos from a better source and see how they work.

an MP4 is a compressed format. re-encoding is going to give you worse results that what you started with it. it's like trying to cook rice twice.
the only things you should be re-encoding are videos that come from as close to the original source as possible. most times it's an actually dvd/blu-ray or a vob file.
also 8th wonder videos are the bottom of the barrell when it comes to quality. the QC over there is pretty much non-existent.
if you want quality you need to look at SmashVisions or XtendaMix. Or you could stick with 8th Wonder and hope for the best.

Thanks DJ DisGrace and Nyce..Yes im aware the 8th isnt the best quality, but its affordable and I have used smash in the past, they're awesome, and pricey compared to 8th. I moght jump over to Smash once they complete their merger. I see alot of people talking about the new pricing structure over at smash, but have yet to go check it out!

I can tell you this In the last 4 or so years I do NOT regret paying for smash regardless of the price ..that content gets used ALOT, I do however REGRET every 10 bill I have given 8th in this time,

You are describing kind of a paradox/"chicken-egg" scenario.
To anyone getting reasonable rates for Video DJ-ing, the money spent on even several of the "good" services should be pretty inconsequential.
But if you're only playing 8th Wonder and other low-quality videos, you will devalue yourself.
If you think club owners/managers/promoters/employees won't notice poor video quality, you're only kidding yourself. When there's no DJ, they're likely playing HD content on those same displays. They WILL judge a video-DJ accordingly if their video quality is noticeably worse. In an "immediate/first-impression" kind of way, it might be more important than sound quality (though that had also better be good, obviously).

Yep, Im looking at SmashVision now to set up an account! One major thing for me going with 8th over Smash in the first place was the DIFFERENT MIXES you get on 8th. Yes the video quality is subpar compared to Smash, but the mixes on Smash are somewhat "boring" to say the least.
For example,
Example 1) I have ADELE - "Set Fire To Rain" (Jason Dee Uptempo Mix) that I got from 8th wonder, its a dope upbeat breaks version of a super slow song. On that note, SmashVISION doesnt even have the video AT ALL, PERIOD! They have ZERO mixes of this track, not even the original...lol
Example 2) I have GOTYE - "Somebody That I Use To Know" (VM Re-drum) that I got from 8th wonder, it too is a dope breakbeat/uptempo mix of slow song. SmashVISION actually has this track but its mainly extendz of the original and one Not So Great Dance mix.
Example 3) I have David Guetta and Nicki Minaj - "Turn Me On" that I also got from 8th, SmashVISION doesnt even have the track at all, Period, Nada, Zilch, not one version.
My point here is, Nobody is debating whether 8th wonder is garbage or not, we all know it is inferior to SmashVISION, smash destroys 8th wonder in quality......but SmashVISION is lacking tracks and good mixes. Very LIMITED! Im sure I will find more songs that arent available on Smash as I proceed with my account. YES, I am going to smashVISION because they're quality is AWESOME, but I hate that their site is limited. My .02 cents

IMHO I have been trying to get a response form Smashvidz (before they joined VJ-pro) to find out their encoding process. I was blown away how sharp the videos Smashvidz were when I was playing them on ME.
Can anyone shed some light on this? I too have DTV videos, VJ-pro, Smashvides Videos, but EVERY video from Smashvidz is just AMAZING MPEG4 quality. I have tried Handbrake, Vegas, FVP, MeGui, and others, but nothing seems to come close the Smashvidz quality.
Any help would be great! Thanks!
