I expect this has been gone over before but I'm just trying to stimulate some more interesting debates on the forum than the 'usual' one at the moment... ;o)
So... What's the score with HD videos?
Obviously we're moving away from DVD rips towards digital downloads, and companies like Promo Only and MixMash are offering HD files.
Now, at my venues, only one has anything beyond a straight-up composite distribution system. So at present, it's mostly pointless me having any content higher than SD. And as a SmashVisions/DTVideos user the bulk of my files are only offered in SD anyway.
But should I be hoarding HD files for the future?
Is performance of laptops going to be good enough for full 1080p video mixing soon (or is it now)?
Are many venues installing HD distribution set-ups? (They sure aren't in my area).
Would be interested in your thoughts, everyone.

phatbob,
Interesting topic for sure and great questions. I never really thought about it. I think eventually yes HD videos will be necessary.
What Mac are you using? Is it possible to do a practice session with 3 or 4 HD songs and see how your computer reacts to such a load? I guess based on specs of my computer I should find some HD videos to download and answer that question myself.
I'm interested also because I will have to start hoarding as well.

Dude most of my venues are still using component let alone DVI. By the time these venues go full HD, VSL will be better than ME.

It can't hurt the start fleshing out your collection.. I am not going to lose sleep that my retro stuff isn't in HD because the source was all 480 lines of res off laserdisc and umatic anyway.

It might be quiet some time for this to happen... If ever.. Yeah it would be nice I guess but I don't think it'll be no time soon.. that mean all the pools would have to make some major changes including pricing... Which I'm sure no one wants... I'm in two pools right now, but higher prices will make me choose one or the other...SD seems to cool with everyone so i think it'll be around for a while

I've been encoding all of my edits at 480P vs 640x360. unless they're vob sourced and they stay at 640x360

I wish every pool was putting out edits at 720p but properly encoded 640 x 360 look pretty good when properly encoded, there is a diffrence yes but how noticable is argueable...
