So I'm platying a new bar/club - the radio ads say Saturday night Top 40 and house - so I'm hired to play.
I play some house mixes of rock (proper education/call on me/ owner of a lonley heart) owner TELLS me to play classic rock until he says different. so after 1 - yes one track i get a request for naughty by nature - which goes in instantly. then I play Express yourself - NWA and get SHIT to go and play more rock.
Fucking pricks - so I play sweet home Alabama and now am playing D'yer m'ker.
Fucking joy - At least I have an internet connection - time for Beer!

I wish I was asked to play more Rock, I got to rinse a little last night and the vibe was great.
But I know what you're saying man. We've all been there when the crowd is vibing and the owner/manager comes and totally flips the script on you when it wasn't on the bill in the first place.

i had the dance floor packed and the bar packed and from what i was reading everything was good.then the manager comes up to me and says can you pack the floor with different music ? i say with what he answers with disco. im in college town everyone is under 30.i tell him your joking and he says no.
so i never changed my music i just do what i do. read the crowd with my knowledge.i been in the game to long to have someone tell me change something thats not broken.i been the resident dj at this club for 3 yrs.
the manager used to be a dj ( he thanks he can dj ) lol.hes almost 40 yrs old and he does not understand that music evolves all the time.for example a month ago i get to the club and im setting up and he says oh i forgot to tell you its 80s weekend play all 80s music.i look at him and say put a bouncer by my dj booth im not taking request.
so i start playing around 9 im playing 80's rap and 80's dance.between 9-10 i had 10 women come up to me and say what are you playing ( there like 21 yrs old )
remember its college town and we get a younger crowd. lol --- everyone that comes up to me is complaining because there where never any promotions saying anything about 80s weekend.so i told every person that complained to go to the manager.within 10 minutes the manger tells me just do what you do and i respond back if there where promotions about this it still would not work and i tell him look around do you see any 25-30 yr old people? he gets mad and walks away.by this time im mad but trying to keep calm because i have to dj still.the night went ok i threw in 80s music here and there like i always do.........
i feel if your a club dj you have to play all types of music to satisfy everyone but our job is not to satisfy the manager or the owner all the time becuase they dont like rap or any other type of music.business does not run this way you satisfy the costumer.or atleast try to.

Thats real talk though. I worked a spot out here in Boston. I had people in the place going bannana's on the floor having fun. The manager tells the promoter to have me lighten up on the gangsta rap, (I'm playing get buck in here, edited mind you). So whatever, I go into some britney and nelly furtado stuff. This goes on until around 12:30ish when I hit them with some Montel Jordan. So then the promoter comes back up saying the GM is getting concerned about what I am playing, he wants to hear rock mash's right now. So whatever, I play them, the whole place cleared out within 2 songs. Bartenders are coming up to me asking me what the hell I'm doing, so I told them, go complain to Steve, he told me to do it. Long story short the end of the night, i"m packing up, and I see the the promoter kid getting reemed by steve, I go over and Steve pulls out the bitch in him and stops talking, so then I knew. So I just said flat out to the guy. Look I know your talking shit about me, but take a look in the mirror, you did this to yourself. You didn't want to let me do what I know how ot do, you wanted to re-think the wheel, its cool. But if this is how you manage your business, good luck, i'll see you in the real estate papers with a for sale sign, cause you won't get far with out here. In Boston, all DJ's and promoters are intimidated by club owners and bar managers alike. I just don't get it.

Lol I had something similar at this one club years ago for the 1st time. It was early like 10 ish and the owner comes up to me moaning that the club is normally packed. I'd been djing in this town for a year now ramming floors and the promoter asked me to play at his night.
But yeah the owner says people are normally in here and its packed and people are dancing. I was like this a black club. No one gets here before midnight. The fu#k are you talking about mate.
Lol. I'm normally pretty diplomatic but he was trying to run me like I was brand new or something.

I'm having some issues lately with my residency also. The owner wants me to start drawing in the young crowd.... although he doesnt advertise for shit. He puts signs up saying "Live DJ, saturday nights!" and thats it. He doesn't even post it on their myspace page... but he posts all of their bands and shit.
I went to the extent of making my own flyers to hang in the bar, and he took them down after a couple of days. The place has alot of regulars.. most of them over the age of 40. I've drawn a decent young/chill crowd by word of mouth.... but these old folks bitch the entire 1st half of the night at me.
When I arrive, the place's speakers are bellowing Dave Mathews, Sublime, The Fray... and shit.. Then when I get on, I bust out the hip hop/top 40. This one old guy always bitches at me. At one point i handed him the headphones, and told him to DJ. He always says "All of us are going to leave if you don't play Eagles!" and my reply is always "Fine, I'm not playing to appeal to you anyways"
He eventually complained to the owner and manager, who both told him "If you and your 4 beer drinking friends leave, 4 more younger kids will show up and buy shots and jager bombs, cya!"
Its good that they had my back, but EVERY weekend these guys are there, and literally heckle the shit out of me while I set up.

Lol had that before. Me and my mate were djing at one bar in the middle of nowhere and it was full of rude girls wanting vybez kartel and cobra and lady saw and this old group of women I shit you not must have been about 60 kept booing me and my mate every tune we played from about 10pm right through to 2am. No matter that all thr girlies were bubbling all night.
At the end. One of them came up to me and said you are a shit DJ and I'm going to make sure you never come back here again. Lol.

Try to enjoy it dude... or see it as a challenge to better ur skillI have NO Problem playing rock IF THAT IS THE FORMAT!. this night was advertised on the radio and flyers as HOUSE with top 40. - so as people show up for what they expect to be and they end up hearing sweet home alabama and acdc(which is what the owner TOLD me to play) - they leave.
I was trying to create a happy medium - I can see the left over customers from the hockey game like rock - so I play house mixes of rock got to the 3rd track before I got shit -
my first tracks rolling stones - saint of me, owner of a lonley heart remix, and proper education(another brick in the wall remix for those who don't know) - ALL these tracks are VERY close to the original and please the rockers who will finish their beer and leave and keep the new people as they come in because it is music that is familiar, yet top 40/house-ish
what pisses me off most - was I was playing for the crowd that was there - older crowd just after the hockey game - as well as the kids coming in to party for the night.
The underlying problem - the owner WAS a DJ in the 90's, but the way you play in the 90's and the way you play now are two VERY different things.
I had to vent - much better now.
