Copyrights, etc - Funkymix, X-Mix, etc

I personally like to believe that I can make some dope remixes (much like funkymixes, etc)

I should add that I HATE playing these types of remixes, but I enjoy making them, and enjoy the random emails I get from people who have downloaded them. I've always thought about starting a company that can offer my remixes to BUY... but I have no idea how it works. How does Ultimix sell a CD with 10 copywritten remixed songs for $20.00? Does anyone know the steps and processes you need to take to do this?

Legally, you have to License the song for a specific use from the label. I will tell you though, I actually worked for one of these labels....not the remix side, I worked for the artist management portion of the label. but the one i worked for, didnt license and did it all and waited for cease and desist letters.

Those are remix services that have the blessing of the label as a Promotional Tool. Long. long ago in the days of Vinyl Records, labels used to provide these Remix services with Master copies of the tracks and allowed the Remix services to remix them to hopefully generate more interest and club play of a particular record.

The Remix service isn't (or wasn't) selling a song per say but a membership to the service (originally you have to subscribe for a year - think like a Record Pool's monthly fees). Eventually they we able to sell individual issues without the labels bitching too much because it did help increase awareness of the release and more "club play". Some labels even went on to release the remixed version months later as a commercial 12" so they were getting a "cheap professional remix".

Go to Ultimix.com and read the pop up:
