Is there a way to control my sl1 without turntables entirely?

GRANDMASTERFLASH 10:15 AM - 3 February, 2012
I have been using SL1 since it's launch and although I much prefer djing with my str8 150's I have been offered to do some work which would require lugging it around for a relatively short time. Therefore I am looking at being able to use all the functions, scratch etc without having to lug my decks around or even have them connected but don't mind taking my mac, sl1 and HAK 310 around with me. Is this possible and if so what hardware would I need to purchase? I have midi mapped to a Korg PadKontrol before but this obviously didn't replicate all the functions I need simply a "controller".
Is my only option purchasing ITCH and using one of those controllers? If so which one would provide the fullest, professional-ish functions. I've noticed the Xone DX, the NS7/NS6 and many on that page but I am completely lost. I basically want the functionality of my full set-up in a more compact system.

All help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

There is no all in one controller for SSL.
If your wanting that then Itch is the only way.

If you want a smaller SSL setup you could get an Denon HC 4500 but you'd still need to bring a mixer with you.
The HC 4500 is a great controller for SSL though.

Couldn't he use the Denon HC-1000s?

I use a Vestax VCI-300mk2 for my small (cheap) gigs. I'm disappointed that it's discontinued, but maybe you could find a cheap one.

If you don't scratch the Denon HC4500 would be a good compact option for a rack mountable solution. The Denon MC6000 is also an option for SSL.

Best all-in-one solution though probably would be the NS6 for compactness and the NS7 if you prefer spinning platters. I have heard the NS7 being kind of heavy though. I have a friend that has the A&H DX and the sound on that is really nice. The rotary pitch is kind of weird but the unit is very compact making it easy to transport.

Yu can't scratch with the HC-1000s... you can scratch with the HC 4500.

Yeah but not easy on those tiny jog wheels.

Definitely a bit tricky. Especially if your used to scratching on turntables/cd decks.

Ahh thanks guys, I do scratch quite a bit so I should be looking towards the Numark or Denon 4500s? Saw the Novation Twitch, any thoughts? I heard the VCI 300 had back sound quality? Cheers for all your responses!

The VCI-300 is the truth, I've used mine @ many big clubs and mobile gigs and had no issues (Especially if you plug in to a real mixer). It's perfect if you use it as a back-up if the club equipment has issues, and def good enough to scratch with. I just took it to Jamaica with me & DJ'd a party for Ne-Yo with it.

Why every DJ doesn't own a VCI-300 as a main rig or a back up rig is beyond me. I don't know why Vestax quit making it. It is a complete DJ booth that does everything and does it well, and is still small enough to fit in a backpack. If you are looking for something light to carry, that would be what I would recommend. If you don't mind carrying something bigger, you have a lot more options. All the Itch controllers are great controllers and you can't go wrong with any of them. You just have to try them out to see which one you prefer. If you like to scratch, the NS7 is probably your best bet, but you can scratch on just about all of them, it's just a matter of getting used to a smaller platter or a non spinning platter. Don't be surprised if you don't go back to turntables after trying out a controller.

+1
VCI-300 MK2 = get in, get out, get paid

I use 2 Technics for my "real gigs".

You still need a mixer, but I used to do gigs with just my 57 and a trigger finger in internal mode. I just mapped the sliders to the internal pitches, some pads to the pitch bend and cue points as well as the Play control.

Worked fine for me if a little boring. I switched to a VCI-300 mainly cause I still like to scratch. That said, I would never use it for a "real" gig just cause I can do more with turntables. That and decks just feel better....

Brilliant thanks for all your input guys! I think it looks like the VCI -300 if I can find one at the right price then. It's suitable to connect to a PA System right, xlr's etc.

Thanks again for all your help!

VCI300 only has 1/4" balanced outs and RCA unbalanced outs (on the same channel) so you'll need adaptors for XLR cables...
