DJ HELLO mash-up/blend/silly serato mixtape

DJ HELLO! 8:26 PM 18 August 2005
Hey it's me again... this time with something a bit different - I was recently asked to play a surprise 30th party for a close friend.

So far so good.

Except that he LOVES old rock, especially Queen and his girlfriend loves pop and trashy 80's. Oh and all the families will be there so keep the wacky cutting to a minimum and kill the swearing. Oh yeah but the rest of the crowd would like hip hoppy stuff... you know like you usually do... can you just mix all that in?

So basically I asked some of the people involved to send me a list of the tracks they would like to hear, then I sat down with all my stuff, all their stuff and some mash-ups I'd hunted out on the internet and some tracks I'd made or mashed... and here's what came out the other end on the night...

Admittedly I tightened up the mix a bit and added an intro but essentially this was what I played on the night (thanks to seratos lovely highliter I was able to re-record the same playlist).

It went down a treat and you can't beat the sight of two 50+ Mums doing a kind of dosey do to a mix of INTERGALACTIC and RADIO GAGA...

Might take a while... there's about 60+ tracks
DJ HELLO! 2:54 PM 19 August 2005
Here you go... sort of a rough tracklist but really you need to hear most of them to "get it" couldn't be bothered to list what songs are contained within each mash-up (sorry)...

Bear in mind I'm not playing the full track of most of these, it's elements... and in the case of the Justin tracks I was making a point to someone that the best part of a Timberlake track is always the end...

Anyway hope this errrrrr "helps" feniks... but I still think you need to hear it rather than read it

Ha ha ha ha

Cheers Kagen - rock the party, glad you enjoyed it - in all honesty it was a real ballache to put together but I'm very pleased with the result.

Most of all though, as always MASSIVE RESPECT must go out to all SERATO crew without whom none of this would have been possible

keep on rockin'

hey feniks, d'you hear it yet - what's the verdict?
feniks 7:04 AM 24 August 2005
oh yeah.....sweet! very clean...nice variety. this mix is on my ipod for constant rotation. thanks!
feniks 2:47 PM 25 August 2005
forgot to add....sounds like you have at least 3 sources or more at times. did you multi track this? either way....it's dope. very nice!
nik39 4:38 PM 25 August 2005
Hm, dl'ed it. Sounds like a lot of work and time you invested. Not my music style. But besides that there is some criticism I have to give out...

* Some scratches in the intro are very off, technically they sound okay, but somehow not on beat. Did you record them separatley and then placed them in some multitracker programm?

* Most of the tracks were not beatmatched tight enough, accapellas and background are not on point. While I know its hard to blend with live music there are some tracks where I assume they were made with synthis and beatmachines and even those are off compared to the accapella.

* Interesting styles of music, didnt know one could mix them ;)
feniks 6:48 PM 25 August 2005
i disagree...i thought that given the wide variety of music that was used (ie. high degree of difficulty) this was a well-put-together mix. you can't really fault him for a few very subtle mismatches when he is mixing such diverse tracks. honestly, after looking at the tracklisting (and before hearing the mix) i thought that the mixing was going to be much more sloppy. as far as the scratching, i don't know how you can criticize that. sounded pretty good to me....but then again i'm not a turntablist. i like the mix....and it's not even my type of music

Feniks, you're right. I must revise my first criticism. After listening to the whole thing, I must admit it was more the first 20 minutes which werent mixed tightly, after that the mixes are okay. Also the scratches are fine. And also music is much better, personal taste.

But the criticism still applies to the first 20 minutes. I was not clear enough, most of the criticism was aimed at the acapellas laid on the beats, they were not on point, for example at 08:30. But as said it might be due some real live music which might not bw tight. This stuff is a b**** to mix.

Dont want to argue here as this is also to some extent personal preference, but for my taste if you want to hear some really good (tight!) mixes with different styles of music try the DJ Spinbad tape, there are two out there titled something like "80's mix" or so. I didnt like the music there but the mixes were tight.

On the other hand... it wouldnt be fair to compare this mix against on from Spinbad, he and DJ Revolution are the masters of tapes :-) (Oh someone remember the track from DJ Revolution and Spinbad on Revolutions LP? .. Yummi and funny.)

This is not meant to be a diss against the mix presented here. :-)
DJ HELLO! 10:09 PM 25 August 2005
Ah well - better luck next time... like I say, I was kind of working to a brief as far as some of the music choices were concerned but there we go.

I was fairly pleased with it but I'm not Spinbad... and it's really just a signpost on the way to being better next time.

Soz to those who didn't feel it. Ah well back to the drawing board...
feniks 5:32 AM 26 August 2005
nik...agreed.

nice mix still....prob better than most could have done given the wide variety. i mean come on...how often do you hear "heaven is a place on earth" mixed in at -8 over top of "under pressure" with some rap vocals to boot.

hahaha

have a great night everyone....

wow, 158mb... dl right now...9% done....gonna do some chores..hopefully no one calls my house (wi fi on same wavelenght as home phone! 2.x ghz)
God is a DJ 7:42 PM 13 September 2005
Haha, man thats whacky.

Sure some bits and pieces are off point but who cares! Loved it.
Dj KaGeN 8:32 PM 13 September 2005
Programming always wins over mixing... You put togather badazz jams back to back - you'll get everyone to forget how the actual mixing was done, unless you posted the mix in a forum of DJ's (a.k.a. major critics)
DJ_Mike_Coquilla 8:33 PM 13 September 2005
hello dj hello,

i tried to burn a CD so i can listen on my way home (but couldnt' fit)...so i just brought my lappy home and plugged in the earphone jack to a cassette adapter....man, i need to get my self an ipod or something.

:) i cant' get mr. Dirty ol b-strd out of my head//// now ever song i hear on the radio, i can imagine him rapping over it (even in the elevator) ....super hilarious !
DJ HELLO! 4:15 PM 14 September 2005
Glad it's getting a bit of revival on this new link and cheers for all the comments, crits - good and bad.

It's all good stuff and goes to making the next one even better.

Probably won't be as schizophrenic next time, like I said this was a one off special occaision. Back to the purer hip-hoppy-ness next time.

Actually thinking of doing a "creepy mix" something more downbeat, atmospheric... maybe a bit of Anticon.

Anyway thanks again for all the comments.

Byeeeeeeeeeeeee.
