I respect Wicked's opinion because it is true that djs who have never purchased a single piece of vynil can buy serato and copy someone's harddrive (which i don't advocate) and easily have all the classics without digging.
If we the veteran djs do not embrace technology, then we will be left behind and not advance our skills as djs. Innovation is good!

I totally agree and have said VERY VERY OFTEN on this forum, if you never touched vinyl, before you bought serato...you got no business standing behind the decks...

Yo, The cats got a point about wack ass DJ's popping out of the woodwork.
I agree with that. The part I don't agree with is calling everyone else weak when they upgrade technology and try to up their game.
It seems as tho everyone needs to find the happy medium.
I don't hate the cat for using vinyl, But remember to each his own. This trend will die off soon enough...We just all need to be patient.

I really dont think this topic will die anytime soon with deejays. I agree their shouldnt be 1 way of spinning. U gotta go with what you believe and what you're confortable. Personally....I deejay with both serato and vinyl.
I believe these days it makes me a better deejay. Reason I say that is cause even tho we play other people's music, the way we mix them together makes us different. And the way we mix is a lot like our fingerprints....everyone is different. I could mix go just as quick using both mediums than peepz using just serato.
What I dont like is fact that strictly vinyl deejays call serato users names like they are jukebox deejays and stuff like that. But I also agree with them. I really think the newbies should start off using regular vinyl...if you respect the culture you have chosen to learn....u gotta start from the beginning. Trust me its the only way you will learn it right!
I sure I wont stop bringin at least 2 bags of real vinyl to a gig anytime soon. One: to keep it real and i really enjoy beat jugglin the old fashion way. and two: You shouldnt really trust on a machine u cant fix on the fly or have a backup ready. I'm tired of seeing these post on the HELP forum saying IM AT A GIG AND MY PC ISNT WORKIN.....HELP HELP HELP. U always gotta be prepared!

I guess some DJ's still havnt figured out that thats what serato is for,So that you can still spin "Vinyl style" with the digital convinience.I could never get into the CDJ's after starting with vinyl although it seemed like a good for convinience idea,Thank God for SSL.
And if Mo Fo's really were keping it real and Old School, they would be using Victrola's instead of there 1200's.I can respect proving a point but in this case it's a waist of time

Aaaaanyway, it's OK if you're a vinyl purist. I love vinyl even if it's inconvenient but to be calling SSL users faggots or whatever is plain childish. I bet you that dude couldn't or wouldn't dare say that to my face or the face of many other ssl users.

Just signed up here, hope this isn't too much of a long-winded thing, I'm a bit bored at work and reading those posts that WICKED put up got me thinking.....
Personally, I've been collecting vinyl since I was 8 years old, I'm now 30. I've got over 5,000 slabs of 12" vinyl (albums and singles), and a few hundred 7" singles. I DJ out regularly in clubs and pubs using my vinyl. I make beats with MCs and remix other artists work, and scratch up choruses on my tracks quite a lot.
OG Vinyl is and always will be a majorly important thing to me, as a consequence me and the missus ended up having a room built at the end of the garden to keep my decks and records in, because I had too many for the house.
However, Scratchlive is a Godsend. I can rip my OG vinyls and rare ones onto my hard drive, and now I can work on scratch routines without fucking my vinyls up. I can also play and scratch tracks I picked up on CDs as if they were vinyl, and use promo MP3s for my radio show, scratching em in to sets.
I took my Scratchlive to a gig a few weeks ago, and the laptop crashed, leaving us in silence at 12.30am, waiting for everything to reboot. (That turned out to be a laptop problem, and I've since got it switched for a better one. Teething issues!) But that's no different to having an amp blow, or the system cut out. That's happened many times before to me since I started DJing in clubs when I was 18.
Scratchlive *can* exist in a world alongside vinyl - I can understand people getting worked up about people buying it, downloading loads of tracks and then "DJing" out, but for people who know what they're doing and are competent DJs anyway, surely embracing the positives is going to be the best answer.
Are the local clubs / pubs going to book *me* to play there, as an established (local) DJ who can scratch, mix, blend and do a bit of beatjuggling? (And get a crowd going.) Or some newbie who copied his uncle's hard drive last week and has only just worked out how to press play on a 1200?
It's a shame that people don't embrace the innovations.... if people stay where they are then we'd all be listening to 8 track tapes. Or 78s. Or wax cylinders.

But he is one of those people, only seeing one side of Djing...his side is the "real side" and everybody else are wack faggots.
And as for top 40 not being his style...look at that list, it's like the top 40 of "Real Hip Hop". How much more cliche than that can you get?
From the standard KRS-One quote on his myspace to his talk about "Seeing the original 'Til Infinty with the blue vinyl"
Gee, you're really going deep there buddy... is that what you play when you're really keeping it real? And let me guess, when you really want to surprise people you mix it in with T.R.O.Y. right? Because that's how real Dj's play....in fact so much that every single last one of these "Real Hip Hop" Dj's plays that shit in that exact same order no matter where you go on the third planet from the sun.
I mean even his rant is cliche, how many times have we heard that same bullshit over and over again on these very boards?
Serato didn't invent this problem. I remember nuff cats who got their whole set ups for Christmas with the same paint by numbers records and the brand new pretty 12's with Vestax 05's and they were instant Dj's too...what's the difference now? The tools have changed is all. And yeah I agree, the thought of some clown hitting up Kazaa for an all nighter and by morning he's a Dj turns my stomach too but that's about as far as I think about it, because when I'm out playing I'm still one of the top dogs in my game and no download Dj is going to take that shine away from me in a back to back setting.
Do you, I'll do me, and let them do them and we'll see who's stlll standing at the end of it all.

What difference does it make if someone begins their DJ career with vinyl, CD's or a hard drive?
I can give a copy of my hard drive to any and everybody who wants to start spinning just like I could set them up with vinyl and they probably couldn't rock the party any better because they don't know the music or don't understand how to read the crowd.
As far as I'm concerned WICKED is a wake ass dude just on the strength that he looks down his nose at anyone who doesn't use vinyl.
Odds are that he's never taken more then 5 minutes to use the software to experience it in action. I've flipped quite a few "TRUE DJ/HIP HOP PURISTS" to Serato with just a 30 minute demo.
To each his own....vinyl, mp3, cd, cassette decks, 8 tracks...it doesn't matter at the end of the day if you can rock the crowd. I'm just tired of people being so judgemental about how it's being done. Digital jocks are looking down on vinyl jocks (I've been guilty of it too). Vinyl jocks are looking down on digital jocks.
Hip hop lives through us...DJs, MC's, producers and the fans...not in or on the vinyl.

I got a better collection than this dude in both vinyl AND now in mp3's and I could put a better show just for the simple fact that I have a wider selection to choose from by not having to bring all my vinyl.
It's cool that he has originals and guess what, some of us do too, but we aint stupid enough to 1. Break our backs carrying all that shit from gig to gig. 2. Ruing our dope vinyl or putting it at risk anymore.

or I wonder if when the first phonograph came out in 1877, people were like, "I'm keeping it real, I ain't listen to that shit in my house. Portable music is for faggots. Real heads got to the concert hall for music." If they kept it real, how would technology have progressed from the first phonograph to the 1200. Without progression there wouldn't have even be djs today.
On a side note, I think composers, like Mozart and Bach, were the original djs. If you think about, the were mixing different instruments together, like violins and trombones (like to 12"s) to make symphonies (mixtapes).

The real crazy thing is that before Serato...Jeff was using CDJ's almost 50% of the time.
I saw him spinning at a club in Philly and I was kind of disappointed by that. For some reason I just don't like CD turntables. It's just my personal hang up I guess because I know that they work very well.
I had always said that the day I couldn't use my Turntables anymore was the day that I was going to walk away from Spinning.
Thank you Serato!!!!!
P.S. I'm sure that I would have gone and picked up a pair of CDJ's and kept it moving...LOL

agree with u to a point though...i believe they wouldnt be considered djs but producers instead...we as djs mix two TRACKS together...(even when we're working with instrumentals such instrumentals have been put together by combining instruments...even if u made the instrumental when u were making it u were producing it...not 'djing' it)...which is what they did back in those days...put instruments together to form a symphony = producing...IMO

For me Serato is keeping vinyl alive so to speak. There were times I'd walk into a new gig and all I would get is frowns when I'd setup my turntables. Seriously some people would get worried Id by playing 80's tunes all night. They had no idea people still played on Vinyl. This was like last year. Now its, "WOW sweet setup". Serato has even converted DJs who played on CDs back to vinyl. Ive switched two over myself personally. They all say the same thing. Nothing can compare to the control or feel of vinyl.

in the end, and for calling me idiot for using my favorite tool of all times that allows me to transform in vinyl all my music, he is a fucker

I personally do not give a fuck about no DJ AM. I'm NOT a DJ who plays what YOU want...I play what the fuck I want, period!and stop reading at that point...
he is so self-centered in his opinion that he ends up being a total idiot while expressing it - i was with him when he start saying that he doesn't play what he doesn't like - more power to him... but all the bashing is just plain stupid...
... seemed to me like inquisition - if we can't explain it and it isn't on our side, then it's a mighty force we should ban and hate...
what a muppet - big props for still getting gigs playing strickly what he wants - then again, for 100 people for 100bucks... goes around comes around...
.. i learned to like timberlake... i had to remix it, edit it and twisted it... i play it my way.. but i still play it... same goes for aguilera, britney, will.i.am and etc.
in the end, and for calling me idiot for using my favorite tool of all times that allows me to transform in vinyl all my music, he is a fucker

WICKED is a vinyl fiend and I dont see anything wrong with that. If he thinks im lesser of a DJ for using Serato, Thats on him. He knows I own slabs of original wax. Its just a crazy thought, knowing alot of DJ's nowadays are using Serato or CDJ's.

how close minded can one be ?
if he doesn't understand the concept then i'll excuse him... there will always someone that simply just don't get it...
maybe he's that one

same goes for CDJ's who hate Serato DJ's and claim that CD's are superior than vinyl.

again, if wicked is saying that strictly uses vinyl because it sounds better it's one thing.. because it's superior to cds it's, seriously, ok..
.. now if he's comparing that to using a program that transforms whatever sound into something playable by moving a record back or forth, then we're (the seratos) are not the ones in need of putting our minds together..
music evolved in every single way in the past 10 years - by that i mean that technology had a huge impact on pushing it beyond unthinkable limits - imo: as long as one is aware of when djing stops and microwaving starts we're are safe to say we're sane

I think that Wicked doesn't want to leave his comfort zone. He has found a style, and niche to hibernate in. He refuses to leave that cave because to him, there is nothing outside the box.
Once he leaves that cave, he will be forced to adapt to a new concept and that would be extremely difficult to accomplish, therefore It is much easiar to play the same sets over and over again without the need for new technological creativity.
Everyone has a right to stay in there comfort zone. I still record my mixes on tapes because I refuse to use new technology.
