I have had some people say that they want me to create a professional website that has "professional pictures" (of myself) on it.
Do any of you have websites that you think fir this? if so i would love to check them out because i'm kind of at a loss of ideas of what to have done, and what kind of pictures to have taken.

It's using a black gif that I made to use as a background. You're welcome to use it or you can make your own and replace that link with the location of your gif or jpg.

Hey A, AreU trying to tweak your MySpace page or create a "real website"?
There are plenty of WYSIWYG - (What You See is What You Get) free HTML apps for the Mac like Nvu - www.nvu.com
Also if you get dedicated hosting, easiest thing is to do a blog like Wordpress and edit the Theme to your liking. I recently started to redo my site as a blog but been swamped with other shit so it is a work in progress when I get some time:
www.artpayne.com
Shit i need to post there as much as I do here...

i have a simple myspace.
i need to put together a website. basically i have been getting way too many people saying do a myspace... do a myspace... and after i made one i started to hear
make a website... make a website...
a few nights ago i started had a club owner say. "You know, if there is one thing i have learned in this business, it is that image is everything... i want you to take my photographer and have pictures done."
i'm at a loss because i dont know how i want any of it organized on the website, and what kind of pics/places to have taken

Well, just do everything that DJ Splyce did above and you should be good ....
Damn - that is where that Larry King Quote came from - cool!
Actually depends on if you are doing Clubs or Mobiles or both. There is software out there for the Mac to make it easy to do (Rapidweaver, iWeb, Freeway, etc) but the big thing is content. I've played with a lot of those Apps but I gotta run to work but I'll chime in over the weekend with more details if I get a chance.

it's coming along Mark, iWeb makes it easy, but I think it needs a little redirection (but I am too tired tonight after the club).
I am kinda in the same boat as you, I want to step up my mobile game since I have Serato now and don't have to carry tons of vinyl and lots of CD's.
I found another DJ forum that is kinda on point as far as mobile DJ's for info (it is Microwave city, but that is what works for them) but they have a pretty active part of the forum that just deals with web design for Mobile DJ's.
Just like I am learning shit here, I am learning quite a bit over there about doing mobiles and targeting your website to potential clients.
You may have to register but check around in here:
www.djchat.com
It's pretty cool but it's like the scratchlive forum for Wedding DJ's.They even have guys over there that will review and pick apart your website like sixxx reviews mixes here.
Just remember it's "their hood" and some of the stuff about DJing may be discouraging/ass backwards in our eyes or make you feel like you stepped into a time warp. They do have a few Serato jocks over there too.

Mark - I like the general feel of your site. It's clean, and for the most part informative.
I'd stray away from all of the equipment talk if I were you. 99% of brides have no clue about gear, nor do they care. As long as they know you're using professional grade sound and lighting gear you're good. What I'd promote more is your talent. If you're a Serato jock that mixes why not advertise that you "mix" music and keep a flow rather than just "push play"? You should also have a call to action on each page, DJIntelligence.com offers some real cool tools that you can slap on your website - a availability checker, price quote generator, music library search, etc. MY mobile company's web site is www.lmdjs.com and I use those tools there.

Mark, that's one of the things I was gonna say in the redirection. Only OTHER DJ's care what EXACT type of Equipment you use. I would say little buzz words/phrases like "High quality", Professional, Latest Digital Technology with Thousands of Songs at my fingertips to make your Event a success. (maybe Except list if you have multiple wireless mics).
What would be cool (and what I am going to do when I do the Mobile part of my site) is to link off to a separate page with that phrase "Latest Digital Technology with Thousands of Songs at my fingertips to make your Event a success" and briefly explain Serato. Something like "Look and Feel of a traditional DJ with Turntables & Vinyl, but controls High Quality the Digital Music just like a CD's only better".
One thing that I picked up from the Microwave site listed above is take GOOD pictures.
Looking at the pics of your set up, you may not get hired. The biggest thing that surprised me believe it or not, is DON'T SHOW the wires and the clutter. We as DJ's don't give a fuck about the speakers and the wires up on the table but think how much time the Bride spends making sure each table at the reception has the centerpiece placed just right, etc. Then they look up and see you set up on a Card table with tons of wires everywhere.
Take some more pics or your set-up at home with a Dollar Store Table cloth and when you take pics at a event, try and make sure the Hall ALSO wraps your table with a cloth like rest of the Dinner tables. Use napkins to hide the EXCESS wires behind the tables to the mixer, etc. Some guys even use a white table cloth and have a few Pin Spots flashing underneath for those times when the Dance floor is empty and people are just looking at you. Look cooler than the plain white cloth.
Anyway, just a few things that I am picking up over at the Microwave site.

Mark,
im also gonna agree with art and vito above. i checked out the site and its prett good my needs more content and better pics of the stuff thats on there now. your set up isnt bad, but its the way its presented on the site and on the front of your page. the table with just the turntables and all the wires showing is not a good look. bring a table cloth or use the halls table with there table cloth and matching table skirt to hide all the wires and equipment under it. image is everything unfortunatly.
also, i didnt see a cd player at all. i ALWAYS bring a cd player for that just in case moment. just a thought or my .02.
i have been doing weddings for the past 8yrs prof. and DJing in general for the past 18yr.

I just saw you website Mark. I was at the beach, that's why I didn't even have time to check it out - last 4 days of vacation. Plus, I didn't want to see it on the sidekick, as I wanted to see it on a real browser.

Looks like you're using some kind of cheesy template. Not good. If you don't know what you're doing, let a professional handle your website. It's too generic and just plain boring. I know it's not finish, but creating a website isn't something you learn in a couple of weeks.
It's best to find a template that you can modify in Adobe GoLive, Flash, or any of those softwares out there... if you know how to use them.

I'm not promoting it for a few mos. I'm thinking simple & nice. I'll try to learn what I can till then and put up a new site once I get it all down. But none the less I will learn as much as I can and do it myself. Thanks for looking at it. I really need more pics. I'll be work on that the most for now. then I'll go try to learn flash. WHAT SOFTWARES ARE FOR MAC? Is all I need to know.

He's using Apple's iWeb, which makes it easy and simple for the most part for personal websites but it does have some limitations. Pages are very slow to load on first visits (they get faster as the browser caches the pages) and it uses weird naming conventions that you have no control over. Overall it makes it simple and easy to get a site up and running on a personal level but if you are using it for a "business" you may be limited.
I haven't tried iWeb 08 yet (I have it around here somewhere, I REALLY need to load it) but one strong point of iWeb 08 is Photo Galleries, so it still has it uses:

But none the less I will learn as much as I can and do it myself. Thanks for looking at it. I really need more pics. I'll be work on that the most for now. then I'll go try to learn flash. WHAT SOFTWARES ARE FOR MAC? Is all I need to know.
I cut my web teeth on Golive and have been using it for almost 5 (or more) years when Adobe replaced a App called PageMill with GoLive. There is a learning curve but it is a lot easier to use (to me) than Dreamweaver which is the Industry standard.
Flash is a motherfucker to learn and it creates sites that are NOT very search engine friendly (without hacks and work arounds). If you are trying to weddings/mobiles, the ability to be picked up easily by search engines should out weight the sizzle and glitz of a Flash site (in my opinion).
I used to review Mac Web Apps for a website a few years back and the ones that stand out include:
rapidWeaver: www.realmacsoftware.com
Sandvox: www.karelia.com
Freeway: www.softpress.com
I have used past versions of Sandvox and Rapidweaver and they are a few steps above iWeb, (especially Rapidweaver with Templates and add ons) but lately I have been just editing Wordpress Blogs into websites with comparable success.
This site is a mess, but basically I use it for a Party Promotion site to do quick and dirty info about parties via a email list:
dmaurbangroove.com
and my sorry ass website is an adaptation of a Blog (actually started as a iWeb site and I recreated the iWeb look and feel with a Blog):
www.artpayne.com
I guess this thread is putting a foot in my ass to get my personal site back on track for 08.

I just saw you website Mark. I was at the beach, that's why I didn't even have time to check it out - last 4 days of vacation. Plus, I didn't want to see it on the sidekick, as I wanted to see it on a real browser.----
Looks like you're using some kind of cheesy template. Not good. If you don't know what you're doing, let a professional handle your website. It's too generic and just plain boring. I know it's not finish, but creating a website isn't something you learn in a couple of weeks.

Wuzzup SSL community? Magno here...my website is in desperate need of some updates.
www.djmagno.com
My websmaster was my co-worker's 15 year old stepkid who decided to go live with his mother so I am stuck. I have no knowledge of webmastering, so am relying on some of you gurus to help me a lil bit. If you can, try to tell me what you think he used to create my site. As soon as possible, i will try to learn as much as possible about webmastering, but until then, just help me out.
Also...here is my myspace page: www.myspace.com
I use my myspace more for family, friends and associates and also for those who want to see a different side of me.

Magno - the www.lmdjs.com is my mobile site. I run a multi-op company and I've got a staff of 8 DJ's that work with me. We focus on weddings, school dances and formal events. My website, www.kid-av.com (Kid A.V. is my DJ name since Jan. 07) is my club DJ site. I have two residencies locally. If you have any web questions feel free to ask, I graduated from Penn State in 2001, my major was IST and event though I don't work actively in the web design field I still keep up with all of the trends including SEO (search engine optimization).
I'd be glad to help any of my Serato brothers out.

Matter of a fact...5 to 7 other DJs and I are thinking about doing the same thing that you all have done, but we all (except 2) have already established ourselves and our separate companies in the Dallas area. The biggest issue that we face now is how we allocate pay and how who gets what gig.

DJ Magno,
From looking at the site's sourcecode I can't really find any indication that he used a program to make it. I think he coded it all by hand. Although the code could be a lot better and cleaner.
What do you need to update? Maybe we can help you out a bit.

Magno - your site isn't bad. In fact it's wayyy above average compared to most mobile DJ websites. Visually there's really nothing wrong with your site. Personally I prefer to show pictures of people enjoying themselves rather than me and my equipment on my site since clients want to be the center of attention at mobile events.
I'd consider adding DJIntelligence to your site, which includes code to install an availability checker - music search - quote generator, etc. Nice tools to use and clients love 'em.
Search engine wise you're in pretty poor shape. You aren't on the first page of Google when searching for "dallas/ft. worth wedding dj" - you aren't even on the first three pages. Google is how brides find you if they weren't referred by a previous client. I'd consider spending some money on AdWords, and also tweaking your code. Something as simple as putting "PTP Entertainment & Weddings DJ's - Dallas/Ft. Worth, TX". Adding your physical (home) or office address, if you have one will help organic search engine results as well. If you have an office phone number make sure you have a basic listing on the yellow pages. This will help will Google's local search since they index the yellow pages. Since we're talking about Yellow Pages, it's by and large a waste of money (the pay ads) - so if you can get listed for free - do so... if not, get the most basic listing you can.

Preciate the love peeps! Let me say that i am a complete dummy when it comes to HTML coding. I want to know how to change some of my quotes from clients that have emailed me in 2007 that were satisfied with our services. I also want to change somethings around a bit...maybe condense the site. I don't think that i need 12 full pages, maybe 6 to 8.
Vito, i think that everything that you have suggested is great. My only question is how much will it cost me. Give me a lil more insight on costs associated with your suggestions.

Another thing that i noticed is that my site isn't centered correctly, esp. when viewing from a wide screen. It tends to have alot of room to the right. I also want to take the Page counter off and be able to have this functionality without all of my visitors being able to see it.

Hi Magno,
I've looked around and editted your css locally to try and center it but I haven't been succesful so far, let me try some more :-)
But for the sitemeter thing, you just have to delete the stuff between the noscript tags at the bottom:
<noscript><a
href="s26.sitemeter.com
target="_top">
<img src="s26.sitemeter.com
alt="Site Meter" border="0"/></a>
</noscript>
and save the URL, so you can view it whenever you like!

That's a solid book Magno. Read that, try some things, and feel free to ask Payne, myself or anyone else that knows specific questions.
Once you learn html you should check out templatemonster.com, I'm fairly good at design, but you can get some cool html website templates for $50 at templatemonster, then customize it and make it your own. I'm definitely guilty of that.

This is my website. I don't really know much in the way of coding, but I don't need to. I got a $10 hosting plan that happened to include Mambo. Mambo is a "content portal", which basically means that it's software that runs on your web host that makes your website for you and provides you with a back end so you can easily update your content. It's as easy to update as MySpace or Facebook. If you decide to do a little research on Mambo, you'll find that is it now called Joomla (but it's the same software). You can download all kinds of templates - both free and paid for - that can change the look of your website. If you happen to know a little about things like style sheets and know your way around Photoshop, you can customize those templates to suit all your needs.
Other common features for web hosting packages are forums, photo galleries, e-commerce packages, and lots of other cool stuff - all installed with one click.
I highly recommend learning a little about how these things work. Learning HTML, CSS, and a bit about SQL will let you do your own troubleshooting and customization. But if you need to get your site online fast, this might be a good option for you.

Sup Magno, glad you got the info.
You should connect to your ftp with a ftp program of your choice, then navigate the folders until you get to the root, you should see an index.html file etc.
You should download your entire website to your own computer so you have a backup if anything goes wrong!
Then overwrite the index.html and then the mainstyle.css which I think was in the styles folder.
Hit me up again on the pm if you need help. Mind you I'm on +1 gmt so I'm going to bed now ;)

I'm in dire need of a new site, I used to have a big site with all the bells and whistles but it eventually became dated (and a hassle to update) and I no longer have the need for a big deal site. i want a nice template where I can update myself and not have to deal with a website guy everytime I want to update every little bit of info.
I've seen some decent templates that are almost there but just fall short, I know I get what i pay for and should have a custom done, but I just dropped 26 g's on going back to school so the pockets are a little empty right now.
Any advice?

Blogs are the way to go...
Just get someone web savvy geek or dude to edit the template to make it your own (easy, just change the images in a Photoshop type app).
Look at some of the ones we hit here:
www.deeznotes.com
www.discobelle.net
They can have static pages too, and then the Blog factor makes it easy to update.
I use wordpress but the hot new thing on the block is joomla
www.joomla.org
which is like a mix between traditional WYSIWYG Web apps and blogs. I need to fuck with it when I get time and see if it lives up to the Hype...
I have been avoiding it because once I get into stuff like that, I get obsessed and it takes up weeks of my free time.

Fuck, just installed Joomla on my site to take a look at it...
Oh yeah - that shit is sweet. I do a little bit of web stuff but at first glance if you want to do a personal or small biz website with low/no cost this would be the way to go.
I need to put together a website for an event we are doing this summer, I think I am going to use it for that. It looks sweet as hell with options up the ass. Kicks wordpress in the ass already.
Check the cpanel of your hosting company and see if they provide a install of it (mines uses Fantastico Modules for Installs), a few clicks and it installs easy as pie.
This is going to be huge...
