Dream DJ Bag

theCraneStand 7:36 PM - 30 July, 2011
When we first started out the gate, we had an alright bag. Held your laptop, SL1, a few Cranes, Head phones, wires, and a little extra space for wing-dings and redbull. Some of you out there had one. We are thinking about putting out a new Gear Bag for all the playas out there. We want to hear from you!

*Number one complaint of the bags that are out now
*Number one Wish for your Dream Bag
*Crucial features (wheels, etc.)
*What are you gonna stuff in there?
*Desired outside dimensions
*Look and feel of the material
*Anything else that comes to mind

Please tell us what your Dream Bag is! You never know, we might make it a reality.

This post is in no way an advertisement of a product or service as there is no existing product related to this post. We are strictly opening up a conversation on what would be the perfect DJ Bag.

Thank you!

I use a backpack type bag for my laptop and have a records style bag for my records and stand. I am definitely in the market for something that brings them together.

The biggest thing for me is protecting my laptop and keeping my records flat without the entire bag being too bulky. I need to be able to fit a UDG sleeve and a few individual records.

I also want a super-protected pocket for an external hard drive.

Crane stand pocket would be cool with a mini sleeve for the sub tray

Sometimes I listen to mixes on the way home so I want a pocket on the outside that holds cans. Easy access

Seamless odor proof sealable rigid stash pocket ;)

Cable pocket with dividers, like a fan file folder.

External business card slot for quick handouts.

Tracking beacon.

I used of those Shure bags for a long time that had a shoulder strap and it converted into a backpack. Great concept but the backpack mode was uncomfortable. Maybe the other way around would be better, make it fit great as a backpack but have an attachable shoulder strap.

*Number one complaint of the bags that are out now
They fall apart too easlily, a DJ bag has to be ready to endure the hardest conditions, being lugged everywhere, being thrown around, having drinks spilt on it, the works, one of my old technics bags barely lasted 6 months, now I rock a mono over the shoulder bag which is slightly better

*Number one Wish for your Dream Bag
I have several - a bag that can easily fit everything, but not be too bulky... definately over the shoulder - I have had both wheels and over the shoulder and it was a nightmare getting me and my bag from one end of a packed club to another on wheels, now with over the shoulder I can just glide past everybody...the bag has to communicate "I am a DJ"... so bouncers know what's up when you skip the line...needs to protect my macbook - have a special compartment for it with padding for it.

*Crucial features (wheels, etc.)
have to be able to open and close it quickly

*What are you gonna stuff in there?
15" Macbook Pro, Charger, Headphones, CD Wallet, SL3, Stanton Uberstand (sorry crane!), ipod, spare cables & towel

*Desired outside dimensions
Has to amply fit the above contents

*Look and feel of the material
the "I am a DJ look"

*Anything else that comes to mind
it has to sit upright, my current one keeps on falling over when i try to stuff things in it

If you consider making a compartment for SL1/2/3/4 remember that a lot of people wrap wrap cables around them thus making it bigger
willythekidd 9:32 PM - 30 July, 2011
The headliner is by far the best solution I've found...but it isn't perfect. I'll tell you what i like about it:

LIKES
*Small/Medium profile - may not sound like a big deal but going in and out of clubs I like a smaller bag. My first bag was huge and i hated it
*The compartment that opens up all the way - very hand to access either side of the bag
*Holds plenty of vinyl...a must. Not all bags do.

DISLIKES
*Velcro compartment on the inside...i usually don't open the zippers up all the way so the velcro is an extra hindrance and it often gets caught on the mesh.
*The cable organizers - DONT WORK
*I'd like a few smaller compartments

Now to answer your questions...
*Number one complaint of the bags that are out now
They all fall short in one category or another...either the bag isn't functional or it can't hold vinyl or something along those lines. Quick access is a must for all bags.

*Number one Wish for your Dream Bag
A bag that can be somewhat customized. I bring different gear with me to my club gigs than i do with my mobile gigs. Those skyn bags look dope but they just aren't functional and are too expensive.

*Crucial features (wheels, etc.)
Nothing that hasn't been said.

*What are you gonna stuff in there?
Laptop, 8-10 vinyl, uberstand (currently), shure needle case, spare mic and cable, gruv glide, mac charger, headphones, small accessories and cables such as ear protection, business cards, lighter, gum, etc. Sometimes i carry a small extra mid controller.

*Desired outside dimensions
Small profile as possible without sacrificing the basic needs.

*Look and feel of the material
Durable. Professional. Not corny.

9) a nice place for audio wires

10 ) a separate nice place for AC wires

11) Light in weight

12) a nice place for your stand

+1...I like this, but with maybe a quick accesss to give out demos/mix cd's
theCraneStand 12:54 AM - 31 July, 2011
Do you guys like the packs with the belts or no? It would be kinda fly to pull cd's and cards out of your belt all batman style eh? Holly shameless self promotion batman!
theCraneStand 12:55 AM - 31 July, 2011
In no on the belt, it would be pretty easy to put a spot on the strap for cards. That way you don't even have to take you pack off. eh?
the_black_one 12:56 AM - 31 July, 2011
+1 on the sarcastic comment from crane stand.... You guys get a fucking grip... A quick place to access cd's and cards? GTFO!!!!!
the_black_one 12:57 AM - 31 July, 2011
I'm over here thinking of protecting my investment and you lazy ass fucks want a compartment for cards!!!!!
DJ Dub Cowboy 1:31 AM - 31 July, 2011
I like the dual hard drive idea. 2 cushy spots well protected, maybe one hidden or out of the way..
geeunot 1:41 AM - 31 July, 2011
It looks as if the Jetpack seems to handle most of your needs. Looks like they raised the price last time i checked: orbitconcepts.com
theCraneStand 2:30 AM - 31 July, 2011
I wasn't really being sarcastic. Just making a little joke. I do see the point of having cards easy to access.
skinnyguy 9:12 PM - 31 July, 2011

*Number one complaint of the bags that are out now
Without a Seperate case the vinyl is pretty prone to not sitting flat when in the back.

*Number one Wish for your Dream Bag
Get some LED lights that switch on automatically when you open the bag. Can be hard to find stuff in the dark at some clubs.

*Crucial features (wheels, etc.)
Just a good pocket layout so all my cables can sit organised so I know exactly where everything is.
Would love to have a vinyl sleeve in it that sits on a hard panel so everything does stay nice and flat.

*What are you gonna stuff in there?
Current bag has:
13" Laptop
SL-3
Headphones
4x Vinyl
Control Cds
4x RCA
USB lead
Laptop charger
Nanopad
Crane Stand
3.5-->RCA lead

*Desired outside dimensions
As small as is practical

*Look and feel of the material
I'd prefer subtetly in the look, consider a lot of the time I'll be walking through the city at 2am with it on the way home from a gig. Don't want something that screams "this bag has heaps of expensive gear in it!"

*Anything else that comes to mind
the_black_one 10:30 PM - 31 July, 2011
I have a 2.5 inch HD that has all my music and videos. That bad boy goes every where i go. I also have an identical 2.5 inch HD cone of my main HD that in case my first HD takes a dump, i have a back up ready to roll. The clone only comes out of the bag once or twice a week so where the clone is stored can be hidden. I'm very organized. Please make the bag to be useful and durable to folks that travel quite a bit.

I take one of my opinions back. If this thing is GREAT quality, I'm willing to pay for it!
the_black_one 10:35 PM - 31 July, 2011
In my bag now.

15 MBP
Needle case ( i glued the case to the bag)
X1 midi controller
SL3
4 CV
3 external drives
1 USB hub
headphones
about 5 usb cords
power supply for my MBP
DJ Dub Cowboy 10:51 PM - 31 July, 2011
anyone used that Jetpack?

looking for some feedback on durability. I need a bag bad.
DJ ST 10:58 PM - 31 July, 2011
I've been using a Gravis Metro-bag for 4 years now,
it holds:

- laptop (up to 17 inch)
- Rane 57
- Odyssey-style laptop stand (with 4 leg pieces and crossbars), could fit an Überstand/Crane.
- Shure headshell-case (I use the tube, that you get with the cartridges)
- Headphones
- Dicers
- cables and chargers to all appliances
- plus I got small pockets for keys, microfiber cloth, spare cables etc.

I carry a tote bag/or a messenger bag, which holds my control records,
because of their dimensions and to avoid them getting broken/bent/FUBARed.
I usually also throw in towel/change shirt/stuff in to the tote/messenger.

The issues:
The corners of the mixer faceplate are slowly puncturing two holes at the bottom of my backpack.
Maybe a padding would ease at stress points, or some cushioning protecting the mixer (wetsuit material/the stuff Incase uses on their laptop sleeves?).
An LED-light, that you could detach (keyring), because you NEED it.
Durable zippers, as well as zipper pullers (broken pullers after two years).
Not as bulky as the UDG Creator-bag, that cube-shape is such a turn-off (as well as the hefty price).

All in all, I'm quite pleased to the 50€ (70-ish in $) price,
and how well it has served me. Maybe I'll buy a new one.
spirez 11:08 PM - 31 July, 2011
I'd like one that could hold a 10" mixer, laptop, 10-15 records plus serato/headphones/cables etc.

Basically something similar to the UDG creator!
ninos 10:19 AM - 1 August, 2011
same, something that can hold a 57 COMFY and a 15 MBP. some records, headphones, some wires and thats it. all i need.

wheels would be cool, like a roller type bag.

but id like a backpack:)

any testing the crane guys need for a bag hit me up ;)

yeah been using it to gigs. the thing is HUGE! but it can carry everything, sl4, laptop, mic, cables, vinyl, charger, cords...even a mixer they claim. but i havent tried fitting a 57 in there. its pretty durable.
spirez 12:06 PM - 1 August, 2011
Size is good but it's ugly as hell. The Serato Creator looks much higher quality and more aesthetically pleasing without looking like it holds a load of expensive stuff.
willythekidd 5:54 PM - 1 August, 2011
i'm seeing two trends...

some ppl want a large bag that can hold a mixer...and some ppl want the smallest bag as possible.
theCraneStand 5:58 PM - 1 August, 2011
So a bag that can be expandable is a plus. I used to have a pretty cool skateboard bag that was two bags. You could leave the extension at home.

Eh?
DJ'Que 6:08 PM - 1 August, 2011
I've been using a anvil record case for a few years. I store 2 laptops cables cords, 2 harddrives, headphones, Cds In a small case, Backup battery, pcToTV (Video Mixing). and if I have to take my ttm57 I have a regular back pack with soft foam in the front where the knobs are that I got from my moms job. ( I rarely dont have to take my mixer tho.
spirez 7:21 PM - 1 August, 2011
Yeah expandable would be cool. The creator looks huge and would likely be overkill for someone who didn't want to carry a mixer. Something that could be split would be cool and quite fresh.

A reasonable price would be nice too. £170 is a hell of a lot of cash for a backpack!
ral 9:27 PM - 1 August, 2011
super strong zipper!

i have swiss army bag, and the zipper is done, specially in the notebook compartment

*Number one Wish for your Dream Bag

*Crucial features (wheels, etc.)
Strong joints for shoulder straps

*What are you gonna stuff in there?
4x Timecode Vinyl
4x Timecode CDs

1x Laptop
1x Crane Stand
1x SL4
1x SL1
1x Headphones (HDJ-2000s)

2x USB cables
1x Novation Dicer set
1x Power supply (for SL boxes)
1x Laptop Power supply
1x Power Bar
1x Microphone

*Desired outside dimensions
Whatever it takes to fit the above list

*Look and feel of the material
Black, must feel strong (with a very cushiony shoulder padding on the strap and handle)

*Anything else that comes to mind
Must be big enough to fit everything including backups and strong vinyl spot that wont wrap records from too much bulging

I'm a travelling Dj, often taking flights and I find that having to take a bag for my Laptop etc... and a separate hard case for my TTM57 is becoming more and more of a bother when travelling these days. For the past 11 years i've been fortunate enough to have been supported by my local Gravis rep and I have found that Gravis bags, although they are backpack style, have been more than accommodating all of my gear, minus the mixer and it's safety.

#1 Complaint is that there can't seem to be a happy medium when coming up with a Dj bag that is able to cater to any type of travelling Dj... Even if there were multiple models for the "type" of travelling Dj i.e. EDM Dj's who would use mixers larger than 10" or Scratch Dj's that travel with 10" mixers.

#1 Wish for my dream bag would be a padded mixer compartment which will guard knobs/faders

*Crucial features MUST include Wheels, straps/handles, padded cases for Needle and hard drive compartments, SOFT Skateboard wheels (Sooo much smoother and longer lasting than hard plastic suitcase/rollerblade wheels) & of course the STITCHING... industrial strength is a MUST!

My travelling gear includes:
15" Laptop
1-3 Control Records
Headphones
Camera
Shure Needle Case
Zoom Recorder
USB Hard Drive
Dicers
Numerous Wires
Magazine(s)
Business Cards
Backup Serato CD's
Laptop Charger
Laptop Stand

*Desired outside dimensions: Small Enough to use as a carry on for flights... that is all!

*Look and feel of the material: My last 2 Gravis bags were the nicest material I've had from a Dj Bag, one was a Paisley print and the other was almost like a very thin raincoat material or a rubberish wind breaker material... great for keeping the rain out of the bag!

*Anything else that comes to mind: Think about "longevity"... Make it right... every Dj will want this bag!!!
the_black_one 7:12 AM - 2 August, 2011
+1 on a bag that can carry a mixer safely
DJ Dub Cowboy 8:36 AM - 2 August, 2011
I think when a lot of bags are designed they add a pocket for vinyl. I want a bag that is designed around a spot for vinyl.
e.rich 9:58 AM - 2 August, 2011
I absolutely love my Ogio TY Video bag. Once you remove the main compartment's velcro divider you can fit everything easily. And it'll keep your vinyl flat which is rad. The top area is perfect for headphones and needles. The zippered pouches inside the front panel keep my RCA's, mic + cable, iPhone charger, Square credit card reader, and adapters nicely organized. I stash my dicers and their case in one of the outer side pockets and my 15" MBP AC adapter in the other. The dedicated laptop bay is padded and secure. I fit my UDG Serato binder, 8-10 regular vinyl, my LStand-M, and a small case of CD's/DVDs in the main area. It's big but i've never had a single issue after 3 years of lugging it around 4-6 nights per week. Durability is paramount to me since it's housing my ability to pay rent.

This is a good idea. A little sleeve made out of solid plastic would be ideal. Padding isn't enough in most cases to keep a record flat.

Oh, built in needle storage would be great too. I think the ugly jetpack has that. great feature

I've had my JetPack for nearly a year now (I was one of the original product tester) and it is just amazing. The bag is so comfortable and fits all my equipment (aside from my decks) and there is still plenty of room for more. For those travelling djs, this fits in the overhead bins on most large flights. DJ Five (Skam Artist) uses on all his travelling gigs -- lockerz.com. I've been a mobile/club dj for over 10 years and have gone through a number of different bags. Never have I found a bag so functional and allows for personal customization. Great job to the folks at Orbit Concepts.
DJYoshi 1:45 PM - 3 August, 2011
I use Monocase...
1 they have a lifetime warranty. They've sent me replacement bags when something has broken.
I keep 2 laptops. SL3 box. vinyl. headphones. needles. 3 external hd's. flash drives. 50 - 100 business cards. my crane stand. camera. video camera. serato cd's...
dj_soo 6:52 PM - 3 August, 2011
I'm running the Jetpack right now and it holds everything i need - biggest complaints are some of the design decisions (i.e. putting needle and box pockets underneath the cable velcros = stupid design).

*Number one complaint of the bags that are out now

Just finding the right fit often without being able to check out the bags properly. Just about everyone of my dj bags recently have been bought online so I often buy on faith. Usually it's missing something essential here or there that I couldn't see just looking at pictures.

*Number one Wish for your Dream Bag

I'd love to see a modular design. I like having my 57 or VCI-300 in the same bag as everything else, but there are certain gigs that I don't need to bring my mixer, leaving the bag a little big if I'm not carting around my mixer. A detachable mixer case would be dope.

*Crucial features (wheels, etc.)

Good design first and foremost. Understanding that some DJs like to bring a lot of backup gear and designing a bag in a way that there are easily accesible pockets for the essentials, and maybe more storage/backup pockets setup up for the backup gear.

Cable velcro's are a godsend.

*What are you gonna stuff in there?

In my bag now:

Laptop
Power Supply
3-4 pieces of vinyl
ttm-57 or VCI-300
SL3 (+ cables in a case)
needle case (shure style)
headphones (Senn HD25s)
Dicers in a case
2.5" Harddrive
Firewire cables
LPD8
3 USB cables (1 for serato, 1 for LPD, one backup)
Mic
Mic cable
2 RCA cables
1 Y-cable
Behringger Xenyx 502 mixer + power supply
2 1/4" cables
2 1/4" -> XLR cables
power bar
Griffen Laptop Stand
iFold laptop stand
various adaptors and plugs
CDs
Business cards

*Desired outside dimensions

I don't mind big, since I bring a lot of crap - but as mentioned, modular would be best since I could detach some stuff I don't need for certain gigs without having to repack...

*Look and feel of the material

sturdy, well built, waterproof.

*Anything else that comes to mind

Good warranty would be nice.

TO CRANE

When you make your bag, can u have a place for mixers that has some sort of cage built into where the mixer is going to travel. A hard plastic cage that is patted that fits your mixer so the mixer wont get crushed by pressure. make this compartment removable so for gigs that you dont need your mixer you can leave your mixer in the case at home.

FUCKING BRILLIANT IDEA!!!!!!!!!

Here's my dream DJ bag...something to travel with so it needs to be sized to fit on carry-on for planes.

I want it to hold:
- laptop
- control vinyl (I use the UDG record sleeve so big enough for that)
- a pocket with hard sides for headphones so they won't get crushed
- another pocket with firm/hard sides for demo CDs so they don't get bent
- room for serato box, needle case,
- a couple velcro straps for cables like the headliner bags have
- a compartment for a couple days worth of clothes (Maybe this could double as a mixer area for those that travel with their 57 or whatever)
- a few other misc pockets

Right now I have the headliner roadpack and it has the perfect amount of pockets, look, and placement, with the exception of having no place for clothes to travel with, and no pocket that is really protective for headphones.
DJ Michael Basic 5:29 PM - 7 August, 2011

Currently using a Triple 5 Soul record bag. I have yet to find anything that seems to beat this for organizing everything I take with me, so I hope that Crane makes this bag so I can get a new one! Here are some of the features in this bag that I always seem to compare to other bags:

* Two 6" x 5.5" Pockets - these work good for storing mac power cord, control cds. Could be bigger tho
* Main Compartment - Elastic Band, Expanding Zip Down Sides, Large Interior Pocket
* Water Bottle Pocket (W/ Shock Cord)
* Compression Straps - good for when I have more or less gear to get the size of the bag right.
* Rain Hood & Protective Flaps - these flaps offer another layer of protection inside to keep rain out and allow me to open the bag without completely exposing everything inside.

Carrying Options:
* Wide, Padded, Removable, Adjustable Shoulder Strap
* Top Handle For Brief Case Style Carrying
* Hidden Backpack Style Straps

*Number one Wish for your Dream Bag
Something designed for travel and function that is not bulky.

*Crucial features (wheels, etc.)
Waterproof, relatively compact size (must be carry-on size for travel), freestanding with durable bottom, padded laptop sleeve, plenty of compartments/organizer ties.

*What are you gonna stuff in there?
15"laptop & power supply
Sl-3 in case with cords & power supply
Dicers
headphones (Sennheiser hd25)
Needle case (Shure hard shell)
mini power strip
slipmats
small flashlight
control cds
2-4 vinyl records
...and a crane stand of course!
If I am traveling ..also magazines

*Desired outside dimensions
I would like to see some way to connect or have a crane stand bag on the side or top rather than inside the bag. This will help keep the profile a little more sleek and not put fragile items right next to an indestructible crane stand.

*Look and feel of the material
I like to keep it simple...one main color, maybe some reflective accents on the zippers. Some small crane symbols on the bag or zippers is better than a bag that screams I have a ton of expensive stuff inside me.

just curious about a fact why do some many want to carry their ttm-57 in a backpack? imo that's nuts!
a mixer that is being transported has to be in a solid case .... if a mixer (like the ttm-57) fits in a backpack that's a plus but it'S not necessary ...

i now rock the 69Ep bag! pretty damn soild! but unfortunatly my X1 doesn't fit in there

Carrying Options:
* Wide, Padded, Removable, Adjustable Shoulder Strap
* Top Handle For Brief Case Style Carrying
* Hidden Backpack Style Straps

*Number one Wish for your Dream Bag
orgnised interior (in a bright colour like orange, red or so) and not too bulky

*Crucial features (wheels, etc.)
Waterproof, stable, various pockets enough room for a power strip!!!!!

*What are you gonna stuff in there?
13"laptop & power supply +
Sl-1 cords & power supply
Dicers
headphones (Sennheiser hd25)
Needle case for ortofons
power strip
slipmats
control cds
.laptopstand
bunch of cables
usbhub & power supply
and of course my midnigght banana!

*Desired outside dimensions
airline ready!

*Look and feel of the material

Stanton almost had it right with their Jetsetter bag. I used one for the longest. When fully loaded though, the stitching on the straps starts to give out. Now I've been stuck with a regular laptop backpack by Ogio. Not quite the same.

Zippers cant break apart as well as the stitching for zippers.

Seems like the UDG wheeled creator laptop bag is almost my perfect bag. It seems to be the only bag with backpack straps AND wheels!!

That's what i need....backpack straps and wheels. Also ability to fit all the standard stuff....macbook...sl1/3/4...2 1TB G-drives (video files take up a lot of damn space) needs to fit main one and back up drive (lot of bags barely fit the one g-drive in.)...at least 6 vinyls..one extension cord and power strip..needle case..

The inside of the bag should not be black!!!! makes finding wires a pain in the ass!! Shiiiiit, I damn near misplaced my SL1 because it got lost in the darkness of the bag. An orange inner lining is helpful.

..should also be able to fit a 57 in it too!!

I've had to bring my 57 into NYC from long island for gigs and it is waaaaaaay better to be able to transport it in a backpack (with wheels) than having to lug it in a flight case and still have your backpack to carry too.....pain in the ass!...especially at the end of the night! It's a lot heavier after a long night Djing!! A backpack w/ wheels is the best combo for me.
