After reading yet another poster asking about what hard drive to use less than a week after seeing this same topic I am wondering if we could add tags to the threads.
Allowing certain people (forum mods, or trusted posters for example) to add a tag to a thread that has some great information might be a good solution for those looking for the same information.
Instead of searching for "hard drives" and bringing up tons of posts the user could search for the hard drive "tag" and only bring up 3-4 recent threads.
Anyways it's a thought. The current method of replying to the same question every week as more users come on board may not be the best option.

Hi Justin,
Not quite sure I understand what you're suggesting...? Are you recommending this as a solution to having what are essentially duplicate threads?
I don't think searching for a tag of "Hard Drive" would really solve the problem any more than searching for the term "Hard Drive" would it? Perhaps I mis-understand. Are you able to clarify?

Right now we have, let's say 300 instances of the word "hard drive" that would come up during a search. The new user would have to wade through all of those in order to find out what they were looking for.
However there are some threads that are all about hard drives, without a lot of miscellaneous info in them. The "forum mod" or "trusted poster" would have the authority to look at those type of threads and "tag" then as, in this case, "hard drive".
The user would then have the option to search "hard drive" as a set of words, generating all 300 threads that have those words in them, or search "tags" and only return those threads that are "tagged" "hard drive".
The end result SHOULD be that the user searching for information doesn't have to wade through all 300 instances and can instead focus on those threads most likely to help them out.
This explain it well enough...hopefully?

Yeah that does explain it a lot better and totally understand where you're coming from.
I think the underlying issue really is site searchability which is something that we're currently in the process of reviewing with the hope of improving soon. Ideally you wouldn't search for simply "Hard Drive" but would be more specific with what about a Hard Drive you particularly want to know, and this is something we do realise isn't quite serviced by the current search tool. We've recently implemented a tagging tool with the updated Blog (see serato.com) which uses tags to find related content, and in building it, we've learnt a thing or two about how to use tagging more across the site.
Long story short, yeah you're right in that we possibly do need to provide content that is searched for / related in a slightly better way, and we're doing our best to figure out the best way to do so!
Thanks for the input, comments like these are appreciated.

Opps...didn't know you were looking at the tagging tool with your blog. But I am glad that you are looking at this.
Thanks for your information!
