What could possibly be more annoying than requests?

RAYSH 12:07 PM - 20 February, 2011
Ill tell ya.. this happened to me last night... its when people get up in your grill and just stare at you, as if you were some animal on exhibition at the zoo. i had this one guy who was standing right in front of me.. about 2 inches away from my face .. just starring the whole night
jwagner 12:18 PM - 20 February, 2011
just tell him hes making you uncomfortable and have security escort them away from you if he refuses to leave.

one uped you tonight though:

These two girls came up and were requesting songs. I finished a mix and they were telling me their requests. As they were telling me, the chunky put her hand on the platter that was playing and tryed to scratch. I grabbed it and threw it like a pitcher.

I don't lose my temper over a lot of things but I flipped out. Said the f word to her about 10 times in 5 seconds and had security boot her.
RAYSH 12:25 PM - 20 February, 2011
man, about 2 weeks ago i had the same happen, i needed to pee so i threw a long track on and after coming back from the toilet these 2 girls were fucking with the platter, trying to scratch, i lost my shit then and there. i've never manhandled a woman before, but i pushed her back and looked around for security, but it was too packed so i just told them never ever to do it again. come to think of it i shouldve just dragged them out myself.

but back on topic - does anyone have any similar stories of being "on exhibition"?

What, stare at you directly in the face or just stare at you on the decks because if it is the first one I can say I have never had that before and if I did I would be letting them know pretty quick that...keep staring=getting ktfo!
RAYSH 1:32 PM - 20 February, 2011
^^ LMFAO both actually. He was looking at my hands on the platter and mixer and then would just stare at me in the face. This happens to me every now and then. People don't realise that we DJ's are human beings than need personal space!

The most annoying things that happen to me are:
One-
When someone requests a song that just ended 30 seconds ago, I mean I JUST mixed out of it and here comes some jackass asking to hear it. I answer, "umm... I'm not sure if you JUST walked in...", they always interrupt, "I've been here for hours", "... whatever, that song JUST ended like 30 seconds ago. You might hear it again in a few hours but I'm not gonna play it again right away, okay? Okay." Then they get all pissed and storm off.

Two-
When people request a song they don't know the name of, don't know the artist, and can't repeat enough of the lyrics to make it recognizable. Way back when it took me like two months to figure out that the "helicopter" song thses idiots were constantly requesting was Raise Up by Petey Pablo...

Which had just ended 30 sends ago.

I know those are requests, but they're SO much worse than normal requests.
RAYSH 3:13 PM - 20 February, 2011
this same guy who was starring at me all night kept on asking me to play.. and i quote..."apple bottom jeans". i pretended i didn't know what he was talking about
Dj Bacik 4:18 PM - 20 February, 2011
I have learned my lesson with women and request. When I see a chick walk into the booth the playing deck is instantly put on INT. Too many times has a chick tried to scratch, or leaned on, or even put her drink on a deck. Granted its the clubs shit but I still flip like it was my own. My booth is on the second level of the club. I will kick a bitch down the stairs if she ever causes a problem where the music stops.
DJ Benny B NYC 4:45 PM - 20 February, 2011
people stand around and watch me mix all the time... i prefer that to requests actually

also you dudes need to let go of your anger. some drunk idiot is just trying to have a good time and they touch the turntable or make the wikki wikki motion. one girl pressed the stop button, stopped all the music in the club, and then started laughing. that happened to me like a month ago.

you look them straight in the eye and say "dont do that again ok?"

youre gonna curse out and scare some drunk girl for "touching your turntable" and its gonna end up being your kids school teacher or your buddy's cousin, just take it as part of the business.

This ^

At a party one time, I had a drunk girl start touching the record that was playing...I took her hand off the deck, looked her in the eye, and asked her "Please don't do that again, ok?"

I think a lot of the time, what's going on is that:
- they're drunk
- their inhibitions are down
- they're not really aware of what they're doing
- they think what they're doing is completely harmless

So go easy on them the first time. If they don't get the hint, then you can let yourself get a little more upset. And if people touching your equipment upsets you that much, you need to make sure that you set up so that people can't just reach out and touch it.

+1... Simple solution. Make a sign saying Requests $2. It will get rid of the rift raft and make you more money.

Threads about Requests?
DJChad72 5:05 AM - 21 February, 2011
I will take request over careless dancers. When you are a mobile gig there are 2 things that can really annoy you: 1) drunk dancers twirling around 2ft from your table, controller/laptop. Given my Xone DX case has the laptop slider, it sticks out about 5" from the back of the table. 2) why do people think your DJ table with power cleaners, light board controllers, and dj mix setup would make a great place to sit their drinks down while they do #1?

I sure dont need another piece of equipment to lug to/from gigs; however a partition or 2 pole/rope is a considered option. As would buying another DJ table to stick out in front of mine with a buffer of 2ft and vinyl table cloth. That way people will have a place to set their drinks down while they dance, as well as create a natural buffer zone.

I could even put a few markers for them to write the name on their cups. :) hmmmmmm... and a folding DJ table would be easy to transport, cheap to buy, and vinyl table clothes are cheap as well. Thoughts options?

Every time I DJ I need to clear the booth of drinks... I even carry a towel in my DJ bag now
DJChad72 5:21 AM - 21 February, 2011
I even have a brand new subwoofer... I put my fogger on top of it, so there was not much room left. I still had a couple people try to sit their drinks down on that. I caught them both times and said, it will just vibrate off. It is a QSC Ksub, so it is narrow to begin with.

The real kicker was there were about 6 counter height tables on either side of the dance area.
RAYSH 5:30 AM - 21 February, 2011
i swear, people just dont think. it's gotten to the point where clearing drinks is all part of the process of setting up:

-remove drinks from booth

-wipe down the area where i will put my SL3 and laptop stand

-set up
philldafunk 6:23 PM - 21 February, 2011
This happened to me on Saturday night:

I just finished a mix, and this drunk guy comes at me and puts his arm around my neck (to pull me close so i could hear him, and his breath was mad nasty) and I pushed his arm off of me. He then makes this gesture like "oh excuse me" so I say it's not like that man, you just violated my personal space threshold no hard feelings. Then I had to explain to him, how it's my body and I have the right to not want him to touch me. Like I'm talking to a 3 year old or something.

It's not anger. I don't care if it ends up being your mom. I will put her in her place and possibly kick her out of the club.
DJ GOOK 8:49 PM - 21 February, 2011
the most annoying thing to me ( even more annoying then request) is when another dj come up to me and say " I'm a dj to, take my number so we can copy each other libraries". What kind of ish is that!
djchrischip 9:07 PM - 21 February, 2011
i just laugh at them
DJChad72 12:34 AM - 22 February, 2011
..... or they constantly pop around the corner just to get a glimpse of the song you are playing. <grin> I have a non DJ friend who does that when I am playing, which is harmless. A close/best friend DJ is okay... but DJ's off the street constantly looking over your shoudler with their blackberry, iphone, android out taking a note for themselves just to go visit their favorite illegal download site is NOT fine. :)

IT NEVER FAILS!

I find that, usually, females are much more obnoxious than males. They often try to come behind the booth, make ridiculous requests such as replaying a song that just ended, playing reggae in a house-dance club, putting drinks in all the wrong places. I think the problem is that, in Canadian society, women generally get away with more and recieve more than guys. Whether it is attention, a jump in the que, drinks, or whatever, women are usually treated better than males in the club. So they begin to think they can just screw around with whatever. That being said, there is definitely more than a fair share of obnoxious guys, but they never seem to actually cross that line of touching platters or getting behind the booth. In my experience, it has only been females.

I know! Last week the exact same thing happened. Dance floor was packed and this girl comes up to the booth and asks for some dub-steppy song. I tell her that all the people are dancing to disco-house and funk, and that dub-step would kill the vibe. I ask her if she was willing to stop all the dancing just for her own pleasure, and she looks at me dead in the eyes and says "of course!". I just laughed at her and told her to go away

my manager from my 9-5 job shows up one night, and he kept walking up behind me so he could see the song and he would write it down on a list, i told him that i would give him the play list at the end of the night, but he said he would forget all the songs that he wanted...

there is a mode in serato where you can remove the songs you are playing from the screen.
click your mouse in the bpm of the song not playing then type djam. do the same to turn it off.
