Online Backup Solutions!

RogerRabbit 11:24 PM - 19 January, 2011
Recently I had a disturbing dream about losing all my data..

I have music files and tons of personal data(music, vids, pics etc)

I have a copy of the majority of my music files at 2 relatives houses - but those files are only as safe as they keep the drive..

Does anyone here have their entire collection backed up online? If so, with who?

I dont use it for my music, but for a few of my clients who didnt want to splurge on a real backup system, we use Mozypro.

For a desktop backup its like 4 bucks + i think 50 cents per gb of data.

Takes forever to upload the initial data, then the differential backups take care of changes in data.

Not a bad solution. But can be a bit buggy at times.

Yeah I am debating between mozy, elephant drive and sugar sync.

Mozy seemed to have the best backing of any company i found, i was skeptical at first but then they were bought out by EMC who is HUGE in the storage industry, so it put my mind at ease a bit. Havent really had any issues with the service.

Do you have your music backed up with them, if so how long did it take?

Sorry to break the news to you but if you have a huge library (100s of GBs), this is NOT going to be a viable solution, with today's technology.

You are going to be paying a good chunk of change to store that much data in the cloud. Also it will take a good couple of weeks, if not months to back up that much data.

Your best bet is to copy your music to different drives and have them in separate locations. One at your place and one maybe at your parents place.

Yeah I know it may take a while to upload I think I may have about 500gs of data to upload but I want a backup for my backup.. It would be nice of I could just drop it off at the company's headquarters and let them upload it on their high speed network..

I'm lucky I work in IT.

I have my music backed up to company servers. I'm good as long as I don't get fired. LMAO

^^ I was able to do that until I started getting into video. Server started getting too full and messing up everybody trying to save things in quickbooks.

I finally got around to this I tried Mozy and Dropbox. Mozy is cheaper but I don't like that if you delete a file from your computer, it gets deleted from the datacenter, I looked at Carbonite - they had the same policy.

Dropbox is more expensive but I like the fact that I can see my files from my phone.. I will test some more and get rid of one of them..

If you delete the file from your computer it DOES NOT delete it from the datacenter. That's the whole point of a backup.

It DOES delete it from the datacenter after 30 days - if you delete a file from your computer. They said they are a online backup solution, not an online archiving solution - I read this only after I got Mozy - wasted $6..

You can just read it here for yourself:
Mozy:
docs.mozy.com

Carbonite(see #9):www.carbonite.com

I'll rock with dropbox for the next 2 months and most likely switch to the $99 a year carbonite solution in the new-year since the offer unlimited backup and external hard drive backup support.

Online backup sucks IMO. Its too slow for the upload. Who knows how long the download will take. I had tons of issues with Mozy timing out before completing my backups.

I now use imaging software (acronis) and dump the image files onto externals. Acronis will allow me to restore that image onto any PC, whether the hardware matches or not. Restoring to dissimilar hardware can be a driver nightmare.

Backups run nightly, once every month or two i leave a copy at moms crib and take back the last one for nightly backups.

Sorry you are right.

I'm using MozyPro in an enterprise environment which doesn't delete after 30 days.
