The last few gigs i have played have been with dj kin who are the warm ups at the gigs i have been booked for. It is just my luck that they are also SSL users and i didnt have to go threw the 15min hooking up of RCA's under always Dark under the table conditions.
The problem is i have encountered a few clubs that did not have a set up of Turntables and CDJ's...now me..Im a Viynl DJ alll day! I hate and will NOT touch CDJ's. So if i am playing with another Turntable dj and there is no other audio source and i need to set up my Laptop...wellllll the usb must get attached from the laptop so we can switch laptops using the same SSL box but as you know the connection is lost and the sound is dead causing me to use the 10min speech over the mic tactic untill all is loaded up.
I was wondering...what if there was a button u could hit that would enable the last song played in SSL to keep playing even when the Laptp was unplugged....and if the connection came back, meaning the USB was connected again it maintained and kept goin...even if the laptops were switched. Now i know that would cut power...so an attached adapter for a power source would be amust...but whhhat if??????
Any other dj's agree?
Ever had this issue come up??
whats ya thoughts?
Ya or Nay?

well that will obviously never happen because the song is playing from an mp3 on the other persons laptop. there are many ways to go about this just so you know. you can bring some regular vinyl and play a song while u disconnect the usb cord from his laptop to yours. most of the time if a club is going to have serato they usually would plug it in using the 9v adapter so you dont have to worry about the serato box powering off. another way is to use cdjs and play a cd while you switch the the usb cord. dont be narrow minded about using strictly vinyl you can go back to the vinyl after you switch the cable easy as that.

"Narrow Minded" no not at all homie.
But if you make moves like me i dont have a resident spot. Im at a diffrent club just about every weekend. So i never know what to expect nor can i predict what the next clubs equipment stock is.
I have been to clubs that have only tech 1200's or both that and cdj's. I DO NOT USE CD'J's for any circumstance. Viynl only and alot of dj's do not have the 9v adapter plugged up to there SSL box there using the USB power.
I do travel with extra viynl...SOMETIMES!
but i have had circumstances when i had to swap out with another dj. correct me if im wrong but if the turntables are connected to the SSL in the thru box and you begin to play a regular viynl piece and disconnect the USB you will loose all audio, even the regular viynl playing. Thats the impression im under so correct me if im wrong but if this is true then you can see how nooooo im not being narrow minded about this swap thing at all.

If you're so bigtime, why do you not come prepared? Grab an iPod with a song you can just slam, echo out or scratch out of the previous dj's song, hit the ipod for a sec, switch laptops...and this is the WORST case scenario.
Bringing a cd you can quickly mix in and out of is not WHACK. If you're a club DJ than you want to put on the best show ever, and 98% of the crowd could give a shit if you're using vinyl or cds, especially when it comes to a transition.
Don't mask your inabillity to adapt and be versatile with some sort of false "keepin' it real" pride.

to make it all easy .. which ever side is playing u leave alone and put both serato boxes next to eachother.. dissconnect the side thats not playing connect it to ur friends box with his laptop ready and he will play the next song once he puts a song on u disconnect the other side from ur box.. i dj 4 nites with 2 nites with another serato dj who uses turntables just like me and its alot easier than having to search 4 a cd or connect more cables 4 an ipod..

Hehehe! I feel you A-Rage. Now imagine how much harder it might be to switch between deejays out here in South Africa where only a handful of known dudes use SSL... I also usually carry a disc, though most clubs out here have both decks and cdj's.

Moves... sure. The only move you need to make right now is to stop talkin so much... get a power adaptor for your SL1, read the manual, read the forum, and embrace the knowledge that people are throwing at you. Leave the ego to the side, on the internet newbies get eaten alive.

if the worst had to come to it, i would plug a 3.5mm stereo jack into the headphone out and before you start, power up serato find the track that would like to play ( press ctrl + o ) and it will open up windows media player and the track that you wanted to play will start playing in the media player plug the cable into a channel and at least you wont have silence, there is only one down side, it will only play at 0% flat.
hope that helps

^^^ i have to ditto that. take an ipod because its worth hooking the ipod up for a second to advoid the dead air. imagine a radio station... would they go off air for 5 minutes while they transition DJ's?

You feel better now DJ BIS...this all was positive till you and ya homie decided to start internet thuggin. Save the slick comments to yaself homie. The 9v adapter was the solution i was really looking for and that was accomplished way before you decided to jump into something that wasnt really ya biz. Be easy and dont misconstrude what i said. When i said "I make moves" it wasnt in a cocky way, i meant making moves as in traveling. I thought i made that clear. Regardless you can do the same as ya homeboy and eat a dick for tryna pop off on me for no reason.

There is the precise moment "positivity" went out the window in this thread: right in the fourth sentence of your first post.
Anyway the whole "issue" is ridiculous: playing a track or two from those hated CDJ's is way less lame than stopping the show in the middle of a night and blabbering on a microphone for (10 minutes?!?!). For God's sake, suck it up, lose the New York Attitude, and think of the crowd.
Which reminds me: with the exception of "last call", "the bar is now shut off", "we're closed thanks and goodnight" and "the building is burning down, please evacuate the premises calmly", I hate and will not touch the microphone when DJ-ing. It's cheesy and irritating to most of the patrons who came to dance.

Not interested in drama-promotion (no need for it, leave me out of it) so will simply answer the original question as best I know how:
I think the best way to accomplish what you're looking for, GI-NYC, is to use a single laptop for all SSL work for the night, and to plug your Buddy-DJs iPods into this one laptop (either via USB or Firewire, makes no difference which) a track or two before the end of your first DJ's set. If you're really on the top of your collaborative performance and you have access to the other iPods prior to your night, the best thing to do is build your overviews (again, via connected iPod to the laptop to be used) in advance ahead of the night; or (if you have no problem copying/sharing tracks between each other in trust) just create crates for each Buddy DJ ahead of the night and copy any needed tracks to the one laptop.
This solution serves at least two great purposes:
1) less laptop presence/damage-potential/luggage/clutter at a gig
2) no need to disconnect/connect anything at all for the performance (and so, no need to switch to a CD or other means of entertainment/continuity during said hookups for "cover" or "fill")
Note: Obviously overviews can only be built when the USB connection is disconnected. However, if they've been built at least once before in SSL on the laptop in question, then they'll be retrieved for those respective tracks during import no matter where in the world they reside or are coming from (i.e. from your Buddys' iPods and not from your hard-drive).
If you don't care about overviews or can do without them for a night, then alot of the above is moot and you could/should just plug your Buddys' iPods into the single laptop during your live show at will and enjoy the freedom.

Sorry, I re-read that and it's not too clear.
More specifically and to clarify, the overviews are saved to the file ID3 tags (along with Cue Points and Loops, btw). So, once overviewed for the first time, tracks will be pre-overviewed no matter where you take/save them from that time forward. ...If that happens to be on an external HD (or an iPod as data, for this example), then building overviews is already taken care of. Simply plug in your overviewed library into the single laptop suggested in the above scenario.

GI-NYC, What you're asking is technically not possible with the SL1-unit because the hardware isn't able to perform what you want. It's just a dedicated soundcard. Nothing more, no memory, no processing, no CPU, nothing.
Bring a few extra vinyls, you have to carry your Serato control records anyway. If you carry along 5 records or so you can just switch to regular vinyl for 1 or 2 songs and switch back to digital, you won't even notice the difference in weight or volume. If you can find a few good compilations, your choice is even bigger since you will have about 12 songs on 2 vinyls, so you con't have to start every set with the same track. And if you can't find that, there's still the possibility of having cut your own vinyl. pick out a few great tracks no longer than 3 minutes and you should be able to have 5 or 6 songs cut on 1 vinyl. Costs about 50 euro and you're all set.
Plenty of possibilities and no hassle. You can even use the few extra vinyls to buy you some time if worst comes to worst... your laptop bails out on you. 5 Seconds later you're spinning vinyl and you have a few minutes to reboot the laptop or find a solution.

i agree 100% Laptops are far from 100% reliable so it's always good to carry back up vinyl's with you. out of 300 parties serato has only failed on me once, but no 1 new because i had those back up vinyls to save my ass. use those same back up vinyls to facilitate your switch between laptops. and always have the ac adapter with you! dont take the usb power for granted.
