Isn't it about time for Rane's flagship SL mixer to get a refresh?

68 definitely not a major fail...maybe released to soon but now its the ultimate mixer!

The 57 was announced 5 years ago. In technology terms, that's old. In functionality terms, the 57 is still very much current. That however doesn't mean it won't be updated, but it's not necessary to do so right now.

Wow, ya you're right, it's already been 5 years old. Sheesh time flies. That means I sold mine 4 years ago haha.

There's a few things about the 57 that it would be nice to see updated to reflect some of the capabilities of SSL that have been added since early 2006.
One that immediately comes to mind: it would be really nice to be able to use the "Aux In" (maybe the existing one along with one extra) to control levels from the SP-6.
I'd like it if the heavier-duty USB connector found on the SL-3 and 68 was used.
If USB 2.0 was incorporated, the signal paths could be bumped up to the same 24-bits as the SL-3 and 68.
From an installer viewpoint: I'd really like to see the cueing "crossfader" replaced with a much heavier-duty part. That fader is one of the weak points of the mixer...I've seen several of them break in very similar ways. Someone bumps the fader hard in an upward direction, and the part gets broken and/or torn from the circuit board underneath.
Most of all, I'd like to see the internal headroom increased so that (by raising the input-gain levels) it wasn't so ridiculously easy to start activating the internal limiters. This is one of the most common things I hear DJ's doing on a 57: playing with the whole night with the input gains cranked, therefore making everything sound like overcompressed FM radio.
Otherwise, I like the way the effects (and flex-fx) are laid out: honestly I prefer the 57 in that regard to the much more convoluted (and in some ways, less flexible) setup that was put into the 68.

Its needs to be a 3 channel mixer right from the start, the sampler needs its own channel.....next unlock the midi side of it, theres more then just Serato Id like to use it with. Bigger buttons cause the tiny things on it now are just not cutting it with my fat fingers, lmao!! Theres a few more things but thats a start.

this is a 100% turntabelism mixer .... i noticed after some zooming & noise reducing that there are afaik no buttons below the yellow/green horizontal (midi??)-buttons that leaves us some nice space for our big hands
and than there are 2 buttons in the top left corner and 68-like vertical buttons - the lowermost lights in blue? and the uppermost in yellow (can say that those are on both sides of the mixer ...)
and some neat potis....

Maybe the two people in pic with mixer are dwarfs which is making the chassis look enormous, but Is that a 12" chassis? Looks bigger than 10" chassis from pic. If so, 12" for just 2 channels? :-/

Why? Just color scheme and aesthetics? I'm probably one of the biggest z-trip fans around, but I just can't see myself getting a mixer with someone else's logo displayed so prominently...

The regular 62 looks too plain on the bottom faceplate. The knobs on the "Z" version look very dope but down like the whole strip logo on the bottom. I will probably just get the 62 and have the bottom faceplate customized. It'd be nice if I can score some "Z" knobs from Rane!

The top of the new mixer is busy/dressed up top and still/naked down low. I'm sure the plain bottom half will please cut/scratchers the world over but asthetically I think the two halves need to match. So, I would have to pay the extra hundred for Zs logo or more to the point pay money to get my own skin--not hatin just sayin.

It's geared more towards performance/turntablist. The bottom needs to be as clears as possible. I think aesthetically it looks really good, the emptiness at the bottom counter balances business of the top.

I agree with you Niro on the functionality of the clutter free bottom half. And I would certainly take functionality over aesthetics anyway. And the functionality of the 62's design on the bottom half especially is beyond dispute IMO. I will own one complete with my logo :)
