When a mp3 is low- u can see the waveform small- but raising the volume on it, can we have it where the wave display would expand according to the louder volume?... I know the VU meter is supposed to serve as the indicator but its a bit deceiving and isnt as accurate... when mixing from a loud mp3 to a low mp3.. raising the low mp3 to the same size of the loud mp3 would be easier to match the level.
Is this doable?

that is in interesting concept. that would help immensely when eq'ing your cued track.

Thanks!!
Edit: Didnt mean to say the VU Meter isnt accurate.. Its accurate but its hard to base the volume on it

how is this different than vinyl? Atleast with and MP3 you can batch all of them into the same db level using software: MP3 gain.

why do that in software, the dj mixer should have gains. not all vinyl is recorded at the same vol. you just had to use the headphone cue and watch your mixer levels?

if you gain anadvantage working in the digital domain - is there a reason NOT to take a course of action and have all your media at equal volume levels?

Lucas - not all mixers have gains....like the Rane 24 - which most clubs in NYC use

I was skeptical, and had 2000 untouched songs and the same that I had run MP3 gain on. I took a bit to convince me, but I found that the batched songs were not changed in any fashion except for the loudness, all songs were set to nearly the same db. Not gonna twist your arm, but it's worth trying.

MP3 Gain fucked up a whole crate for me... made them all unplayable in any media player (but still worked in SSL). Needless to say, I now adjust the gain for each track once while playing and never have to worry about it again.

Those tracks won't play with any media player - why? I don't know... but, like I said, they still play in SSL.

Maybe it could be possible to normalise all waveforms so that all mp3's show much the same waveform?
JD

Yes, its possible to do all this. BUT - im not asking on suggestions on how to normalize mp3s. Thanks anyway.
this is a suggestion that mimics what programs like cubase already do: raise the volume and the waveform expands in the window... which would be easier, visually, to match volumes rather then the VU meter which serves that purpose...

Im not on about normalising the actual sound of the mp3 but the waveform. Im saying maybe there could expand all waveforms so that they are all around the same size no matter what the volume of the mp3 is
JD

How is that helpful? The way it is now- where the mp3 waveform is smaller if its volume is low, serves us better... having same size waveforms with diff volumes is deceiving...
--------
to avoid confusion: my suggestion is for the waveform that moves - not the overall waveform

Em so you can actually see the waveform, so its not just a skinny line that you can barely see on low mp3's. What i mean is maybe an auto zoom feature so it fills out the window
I can match volumes with my ear and the levels on the mixer

if its a skinny line - then why not raise the volume on the mp3 and then it will match other mp3s by the waveform expanding... so next time around it would be at a high level... what if the next time youre djing- the mixer at the club doesnt have gains and u have the channel maxed... Its easier to match the levels when the waveform expands and thats what im trying to get at... yes - u can have a zoom feature but why not kill 2 birds with one stone and raise/expand the waveform... understand where im coming from?

Ye I do, the thing is though these mp3's are actually at the same level so if I increase the volume it would be too high
Im not on about the main waveform by the way, im on about the the overall veiw
