I find myself using the search box all the time as I think the browser is inefficient, especially since I do not have "playback keys use shift" enabled and thus cannot browse by typing the first letters of what I'm searching for as some letters works as shortcut keys. But the search box do have it's limitations, so I have an idea:
What about making an advanced search filter? Instead of having to browse genre, artist, etc., one could use text fields that worked on different coloums, or one search box that worked on all (like todays) where one could use identifiers like e.g., "a:" for artist, "g:" for genre etc. It should of course also support boolean operators (and, or, not). I suspect that it will be very efficient when getting used to it.
Another idea while I'm at it: I mentioned "playback keys use shift" earlier; What about making it so that when holding down shift (or some other key), one can use the alphabet keys to browse?

If you access the search Field by first hitting "Ctrl + F"
You will be able to type anything with out effecting your short cut keys that are controlled under "playback keys use shift"
Bottom line, you should be able to search your whole data base quite effectively.

AFR33K1000: Yes, I know that. The problem is when I want to find more than one song at a time. An example: I want to find all songs in two different genres between 100 and 110 bpm, but I want to exclude songs by a particular artist. The way I have been doing this now, is to do several searches and create a temporary crate. This may take some time and can make me loose focus on what is happening on the dance floor (yes, I know that I could use the "prepare folder", but it doesn't allways suit my needs).
Another idea: what about allowing the selection of more than one crate, of more than one artist, etc., similar to what you can do in the track explorer at the bottom of the screen or in Windows Explorer, by using the Shift (for range) and Control (for one at a time) keys.

A search/browsing filter would be very nice indeed.
How about making colums for different criteras? Album, Genre, Style, Year, Bpm, Key, etc. A great solution would maybe to set it up like smartlists in iTunes: farm1.static.flickr.com and/or filter setups in
Rapid Evolution: farm1.static.flickr.com
I don't know if this would be to much of a struggle for Serato to implement, but it shure would be nice to able to pull tracks in within a certain genre, bpm range & key.
Also this would take quite some organizing on the DJ's part, but absolutely worth it in my humble opinion. Then implement that with album covers: farm1.static.flickr.com
Having this functionality right inside Serato would make it a killer..
What do you guys think?

I really like that idea! Then you would get more the feeling of searching a real crate, a feeling that I really miss when using Serato; I tend to not "see" certain songs when I can only see the title, thus some great songs won't get played. It is easier to remember a cover than a title.
