Why Can't I Use My Laptop Speakers When VCI is Plugged In?

Is there any way that I can use my laptop speakers when my VCI-300 is plugged in to Itch? Less sophisticated programs like DJay have this ability. And the fact that there is a recording feature in Itch says to me that it can "hear" what's going on. So then why do I have to plug in external speakers into my VCI? Why can't I just monitor thru my laptop speakers?

That may be the case, but sometimes I get an idea for a mix and want to plug in my controller to quickly see if they'll go together. Or say I'm on the road or at a friend's house and want to try a few things. Basically, I can't unless there is an amp and speakers nearby. It seems like they made a conscious decision to NOT include this feature, but I can't figure out why.

ITCH is not made that way...It is designed to have the controllers as output. If your asking this to be a feature it's not gonna happen....Your better of with the less sophisticated products that you mentioned.

Not made that way? Yes it is. Itch can "hear" what's going on because it can record your mixes. It's not like the chain goes Computer ---> VCI ---> Speakers. The chain goes Computer <----> VCI ---> Speakers. My only guess is that they decided to force people to only use the output from the VCI because they didn't want dumbasses coming out of their laptop's mini jack and sounding awful. Since Itch is a new product this was probably done out of some desire to maintain it's reputation early on. Think about it. it's not like it would have been hard for them to include this feature. I'm pretty sure traktor can do it. Why not Itch? it seems that somewhere along the way the decision was made to disable any sort of ability to have output through your computer when a controller is plugged in.

because itch is set to look at the controller as the default sound card

Right, but my point is - why? Why don't they give the user the option of using the computer sound card when a controller is plugged in? I can only imagine that either (a) they thought that people would be somehow confused by the idea of switching between sound cards, or (b) they were concerned that newbies would be performing in public using the computer sound card and giving people the impression that itch has poor sound quality.

or quite simply most people would by it for djing through speakers. ITCH flat out does not have many 'setup options for choosing sound cards or mapping midi ect....

Well, I do think one of it's virtues is its simplicity, but I can be the only one who thinks not having the option to use your computer sound card is a little inconvenient. What if you want to practice in a hotel room? Or just want to work out a quick idea?

The reason why:
Windows can only assign one input at a time. Giving the user a selectable option adds complexity and therefore instability to the software. I don't think they are willing to sacrifice stability for a feature that only illegitimizes the hardware/software.
