Chance to move to Australia, would you do it?

DJ Jonasty 11:17 PM - 8 November, 2010
Just like the title states, would you do it?

I have the chance to move my family down to Melbourne for a couple years. House near the city that is a lot less than I pay now. I have a great job here and plenty of gigs but have been looking to expand my horizons a bit. Where I live is a bit small town for my liking and I do love the city life melb offers. Ther are lots of pros and cons with this and I have been debating it for about 5 years now. I have aus residency so visas etc are not a problem. What would you do?
Dj-M.Bezzle 11:17 PM - 8 November, 2010
from aspen??....ooo thats a tough one
DJ Jonasty 11:24 PM - 8 November, 2010
Yeah, I'm pretty much over Aspen. Been around here for like 12 years now.
DJ Sniffles 11:37 PM - 8 November, 2010
Just go. Only live once.
BERTO 11:39 PM - 8 November, 2010
yea if you have the opportunity go for it! worst case you come back...

Exactly. It's better to go and not like it than always wonder what if...

go for it, you will regret not going....
DJ Jonasty 6:33 PM - 9 November, 2010
I guess these are kind of the responses I am looking for. Pretty set on doing it now. Maybe end of Jan or mid May after the tax season. Looking forward to hearing more house music in Melbourne. I may just get out of spinning top 40 and hip hop if I can land a spot down there. Now to figure out how to get the gear moved.

Ship it on a boat... make sure you have road cases and you'll be fine... get it in a crate

and yes... move...
bill-e 4:04 AM - 12 November, 2010
do it...just do it
djchrischip 4:27 AM - 12 November, 2010
good luck kid
DJ Jonasty 1:32 PM - 12 November, 2010
So you guys are saying that you would go if given the chance eh? I could really use a fresh change and a new scene. Don't get me wrong, I am extremely thankful for everything that I have here, but..... Something keeps telling me I should go. I put on the first cut of the new kid cudi album the other day and it starts talking about flying to Australia, Shit! It would be easy if it was just me, I've got a house here, two kids, wife, dog etc so it's a pretty big decision. They are all waiting for Daddy to make the call. I busted my ass doing weddings all Summer saving up for this though so now is as good of a time as any.

you'll most likely regret not going. who knows, you may like it so much you decide to stay.
Steve Dub. 6:06 PM - 12 November, 2010
I would do it in a heartbeat. Like everyone said. If you don't like it, move back.
suaveboy 11:35 PM - 12 November, 2010
I would probably do it too.

The economy is booming down under. It's like the USA in 2004 good time to make $ in real estate. Plus their dollar is worth more than ours now. I'm very nervous that America is on the verge of collapse. Sucks because I do love the states.

I just wanted to quote that...

I've seen many hott chicks from Australia.
DJ Jonasty 5:11 PM - 30 October, 2011
Got laid off last week. Booked tickets and leave November 12th. Holy shit I hope made the right decision. Will give it 6 months to figure it out. Bummed I have to leave gear here. Might bring my 57 if I can carry it on the plane. Then I would have to get some decks. Or I've got an s4. What would u bring?
ontime1269 11:58 PM - 30 October, 2011
I know it is expensive to do but why aren't you going to ship your gear? I know it would be too expensive to ship speakers but you have to take your mixer and decks. I'm sure you could rent speakers there.
DJ Jonasty 3:47 AM - 31 October, 2011
Too much to ship and all my Pioneer decks/mixer are only 110 power. I'd have to get a step down converter to make them work. The 57 is universal and would work ok. Also, not sure how long I want to stick it out so off to storage they go. Such a shame. I've literally got a guitar center worth of gear in my basement at the moment.
Steve Dub. 6:50 PM - 31 October, 2011
Congrats dude, should be an awesome experience. What are you going to be doing there?
dave 3:58 AM - 1 November, 2011
Good move, Melbourne is rad.
dj_JM 11:32 PM - 1 November, 2011
Congrats and we're rooting for your success down under.
DJ Jonasty 2:18 PM - 2 November, 2011
Well I plan on getting an IT job down there, or go into real estate; we'll see. I wouldn't mind getting some gigs and maybe restart my mobile company. Not sure what the mobile DJ market is like in Melbourne though. No problem with decent paying gigs here, so hopefully the same will apply there. Saddest part is leaving my dog behind, followed by my gear. :D
Dj Nyce 1:52 PM - 3 November, 2011
do it. it's a great opportunity. i think it would be good for you and your family. alot of people in america haven't even made it out of their own state. and as a dj other countries such as Australia still respects the dj. something that has long since disappeared here in the states.

a long time ago i had an opportunity to move to sau paulo and i didn't. always in the back of mind.
DJ Jonasty 4:44 AM - 4 November, 2011
Yeah, Nyce, I love these positive words. I'm all systems go now. I moved 90% of my house into storage today. I fly out on the 12th and am all about it. Kids are pretty up for it too. Bummed I have to leave my dog but he's going to my bro's house in the pacific NW and will be hiking everyday so he'll be aight.

I love the DJ scene in Aus, great music without all the top 40 nonsense. I'm really looking forward to this actually.

I know what you are saying about regret. I had the chance last year and backed out for the safe option. I was miserable with that decision. So now I've got no debts, aint got shit going on so I'm going for it. Although I'm giving up a nice 6 year residency and a banging nye gig. If any of you cats want to come out to Aspen for NYE let me know, got some nice gigs that need some quality DJ's.

I will post pics and an update to this thread once I get settled in. Peace
brownsmith 6:18 AM - 7 November, 2011
yes if i get the change to move Australia dame sure i will definitally go for it but but only for visit.
dj_soo 10:48 PM - 8 November, 2011
I had the chance to move to Melbourne like 8 years ago and I didn't - mainly cause of the girl I was dating at the time. Usually I'm the first one to tell people not to let a girl get in the way of your chances to experience the world but it ended up being the right decision since a) the company that offered me the job went bankrupt less than a year later and b) the girl who I was dating at the time ended up becoming my wife...

That said, I'm thinking it's time for an Australian tour next winter since it seems my biggest canvass outside of Canada seems to be Australia...
DJ Jonasty 12:24 AM - 9 November, 2011
Sitting less than a week out and freaking out a little bit!
DJ Jonasty 4:42 PM - 9 November, 2011
Well Soo, now's the time to come on tour to Aus and bring your lady with ya!

SUBSTANCE 9:55 PM - 22 November, 2011
Australia is awesome. Only problem is that it's filled with Australians. *rimshot*
Melbourne is great, lots of clubs & live music venues. Warm summers....
Hope you like tattoos!
tbone8 4:01 AM - 23 November, 2011
Ouch substance hahaha
Yeh melbourne is awesome
Where are you living Jonasty? As i said ive been managing clubs and promoting for 6 years so should be able to help..
How are you finding it down here?
DJ Jonasty 8:12 PM - 23 November, 2011
Melbourne is awesome so far, although hiring seems to be sort of frozen till after the holidays, so more beach time for now.

Tbone, I'm across the Westgate bridge in Newport, which is cool; close to the train which is about 20 minutes to the city. I'd appreciate your help getting a foot in the door down here, any help would be appreciated! What clubs are you managing/promoting? I'll send you a PM.

Life down under, so far so good. Expensive but the coffee and food are top notch!
SUBSTANCE 8:50 PM - 23 November, 2011
Just kidding tbone8. I love Aus.
Had good times playing in Melb, Sydney & Gold Coast.
Thick Australian accents & white trash aussies are awesome.
My main complaint? I overheard some blatant racist shit.
But the beaches, food & eye candy are very nice.
DJ Jonasty 9:16 PM - 23 November, 2011
+1 on eye candy in the city. Omg
Niro 5:46 AM - 25 November, 2011
That's dope you made the move, congrats. I'm thinking of moving overseas to southeast asia somewhere. Good luck
RaySwift 10:25 PM - 3 December, 2011
You should go. You know how many people I know who have families and cant go anywhere? They always bring up the"if i didnt have a family, i would travel more and live here or there for awhile" whenever we have a get together.

Total Eclipse from The Executioners moved to Melbourne. Try and catch one of his shows.
RaySwift 10:25 PM - 3 December, 2011
whoops! didnt read the rest of the posts. So you already made the move haha.
DJ Jonasty 4:30 AM - 4 December, 2011
Yeah, out here for 3 weeks now but haven't had a chance to "go out" as of yet. Been to the beach, up north to the country and just getting some job interviews in. I've got some recruiters working hard for me and hope to lock down a good job this week. I've emailed my cousin to try and mail me my new 57 as I find I'm missing that heaps.

All in all Melbourne is a great city and this is going to be a great experience. Having the family with me is great too, although it was tough to make the move with them so I can see why people say that. The cost of living is really expensive though, but wages seem to be higher and no healthcare costs etc.

Can't wait to get some gigs somewhere though! I haven't DJ'd out in a month now, it's been years since I've gone that long between gigs. Only gear I have down here is my SL3, S4 and Maschine. I'm making it work but I'm missing a real mixer and decks. Soon enough I'll get a proper setup again. Have to get a surfboard/wetsuit first. I may take this time to try and concentrate more on production if I can't round up any gigs. I've just got to get out and network.

If any of y'all make it down under, come say what's up!
JimboJones 7:17 AM - 4 December, 2011
Glad to hear life is going well out there - Australia is a great country and from what I reember the DJ culture is superb. Hope it starts picking up gig-wise man. Props for doing it - I could have moved there when I was with my ex but didn't because of family. (Glad I didn't now, as I split with her - hence the ex tag!)
