CDJs as controllers?

Soulsonica™ 3:19 PM - 9 March, 2007
Hi all - Quick question for some of you other Serato users who interface with CDJs: I'm playing at the WMC in a couple of weeks and have no idea what the equipment set up is going to be at the various places I'll be. Being a vinyl guy, I've always used Serato via 1200s and have never used CDJs as controllers. With the seamingly unfortunate demise of the 1200, I'm guessing there may be a chance that one/some/all of the places I wind up down there might not have 1200s and will forced to use CDJs (probably the popular Pioneer models such as CDJ1000 or CDJ800). Anything I need to know to prepare for that possibility? Warnings? Tips? Tricks? Thanks.

where are you gathering that the demise of the 1200 is upon us?

Not sure about what's happening in your area, but you wouldn't believe how many times I get crazy looks from venues when I ask where the turntables are. It's sadly been happening more and more frequently here. And if they do happen to have 1200s, they're laying in some dusty corner, haven't been touched in ages, and most likely have been abused to the point where they don't function properly.

Anyway, I'm headed to an event in a few weeks that I'm totally unfamiliar with and wanted to be properly prepared, so I figured I should get as much info as I could about Serato running via CDJs just in case that's what I will be dealing with.

PS: Long live the 1200!

I have spun on Denon's 3500 & CDJ's 1000 for fleeting moments and found that it wasn't that hard to adapt and mix on the fly, but I feel very removed and just simply love the feel of vinyl on the deck.

Although it has been improved, cuing is not always that tight on cd decks. If you want a tight start (eg you are dropping a track straight in), start from pause, not cue.

i would contact the venue your spinning at and ask to speak to the sound guy, he would be able to tell you wether or not your gonna need your turntables or not.

Soulsonica, Awesome deal at the WMC. I made the trade from 1210's to CDJ1000's a year ago for my gigs. but still in the home studio i got the 1200's in full effect.
obviosly theres a difference of feeling between vinyl and a rubber cdj deck, but that easy to overcome, you'll notice theres more latency with the CDJ, but reading about it, its less than 10 miliseconds, your audience wont even realize, and actually at that speed you cant tell at all. however you will notice very very minor delay. the platter doesnt move, but you got a display in the platter that rotates, so its like your 7" record isnt actually spinning, but its got the tape marker that rotates and tells ecxactly how much its moving as you cue or scratch. Very respnsive to the touch.
When i played with them before i bought them i was amazed, and then compared to other players the CDJ's stand unmatched.

If your good with the 12's, adapting the the CDJ's or CD decks period will be a peice of cake
