Check for Updates

I have one suggestion so far.
Would it be possible to have in the help or better in the set up section or for that matter just somewhere in the application itself a section, tab, button, or what ever for Check for Updates. Then we can decide to update or not.
It would make updating so much easier.
Thank you for your time.

Not a bad idea, but I would never use it... my laptop isn't, and won't be, hooked up to the internet. For people whos comps are online, this would be a good thing.

The only thing my laptop is online for is for updates and when I rip my CD's to MP3...I use the online database to download the artist names, song title, bpm, etc.
Other than that I dont surf with it.....but like I said b4 at least you would have the choice to use or not.

How about sending out an email instead?Oh, yeah... I forgot about that!
Kind of makes this suggestion redundant.
Thanks, Sam...

I think e-mail would work better--integrate this feature on the forum software to remind you of new updates. done.

i think email would be better too. my friend who also has ssl but doesn't come on here as often is always caught off guard when i ask if he has the newest updates...i think email would be better so the computer won't have to ask to check for updates every so often or try to seek an internet connection...especially since nobody really knows when the next update will be.

Not really a big deal for me though. I check the board as often as I check my e-mail.

Autoupdate is bloat for me. eMail notification is enough, esp if you consider that if you run SSL and youre in a club... Do you got any internet connection?

autoupdate just makes me think of the realscheduler program responsible for checking for updates for realplayer on windows PCs, I don't want anything that sucks that much on my PC.

At the club situation: Well if you are using a notebook and it is yours then you dont need an internet connection at the club...you use the one at home. not only that but I have been in many clubs that do have an internet connection...maybe not in the booth but in the office.
At the forum intergration: I think this would be great...if it works...but let me tell you what just happened to me. I had my email changed on this forum about a week ago. I am on another computer (so not cookied) so I forgot my password. I kept putting in my email address that is was changed to but nothing, I thought maybe it is on a delay...so I waited, and waited, and waited...nothing. So...I tried the older email and what do you know it sent the password right away and now that is why I can post now....lol. My point here is if this simple errror can happen with this imagine how a customer would feel if they did not get the email because of this type of "error" Oh, let me explain something...the email address was changed and I received an email from the person that changed it..sorry forgot his name. but for some reason the password system did not take the change and now when I go back to my profile I see my old email address again.
Another thing that is being assumed is you will have every customer register...not the case....you will have many "troll" and not register at all and never participate here....sad, but very true.
So for me I check these forums regularly...so I will always have the updates fresh at hand. But I am suggesting this for those that dont and wont.
IMO I think both ideas are great....the email is a simple data base configeration and the update is a choice for every owner.....not a requirement.....I dont want auto update like some of you have suggested....I want the choice to go and update my self if I choose to.

Hm, okay, what about an external "update-app"? This wouldnt bloat SSL and would still make sure you have always the latest update.

I had my email changed on this forum about a week agothis is an unfortunate situation to be in. if you're having problems with the forum, let the developers know. personally, i'm not entirely impressed with the forum software here myself (that they wrote themeselves), which trades readability for some useability. it's useable but it definitely feels unfinished compared to other forums software. at least your problem got resolved.

I think auto-update is really a good idea it does'nt take that much space in your memory or even your hd, it will only go online line once it detects that you are online. Plus, email notification is good to people who "has" account. I'LL GO FOR AUTO-UPDATE.

If you were playing out and forgot to turn it off what kind of performance hit would you get in the middle of your set while it's checking for an internet connection?

you don't lose any performance on your ssl when it detects that you are offline or you can select off if you really don't want it. Auto-update can your life easier.

Right now I am playing around with SSL on my G4 500 while typing this reply with my YIM connected along with my AIM....no problems what so ever.
Plus as I mentioned b4...you can turn it on/off.......if YOU forget then ONLY YOU can only correct that.
Anyway...mine would be configered to manually look for an update.....not auto....remember it's a choice.

The question was if there would be a performance hit if some imperfect people forgot to turn it off.
On a different note it probably should depend on if the majority use their SSL computer for internet use also. Probably not worth the developer's time to add auto-update if only 10 out of 700 users use their SSL computer on the internet. If it's the other way around then it may be worth the developer's time to add it in as an option.
If they sent an e-mail it would save you from having to keep checking for updates.
