I know you guys are strictly against selling, but why not make a sort of DJ marketplace where you can buy/sell/trade equipment? (no music obviously)
You could make it like craigslist and other forums that warn users they have no responsibility in making sure both parties come correct, it's more of a meeting place for you to then work it out.
Obviously this wouldn't be a place for people to plug their website or services, and we could make a list of users to watch out for and avoid (more like full addresses, names, numbers so people can't make new usernames).

Maybe if there was some way to enforce a policy that the area was only for regular/established members (as in, maybe that area stays invisible to new users until they're on for 90 days and/or a certain number of posts or whatever)...
...otherwise, such a forum might be an irresistible attraction for a lot of drive-by crap.

I'm guessing Serato might not want to deal with the additional management overhead...even if the area was restricted as I described above.
Plus I'm noticing a lot of spammers/annoyance-marketers have gotten much more devious/clever on some forum sites in the last few years. Not too hard for me to imagine some of those type people "joining" just to wait out the 90 days (or whatever) period.
And of course the whole idea would add a new grey-area to what's been a consistent "Don't post advertisements for any product or service" site-wide rule.
Just (over?)thinking things as I watch files analyze in the background...

I understand the additional time managing it, though if it was like most sites they could just put the disclaimer that they are not responsible for anything. Then have stickies where we can have blacklists of people and another list with just bad feedback. (we need to be able to edit posts for that lol, unless the mods can do it)
But I would understand it would take a lot of time either way just to set it up too.
I disagree with the whole grey area thing. It's already a grey area since we ALWAYS post about products. Dicer, Denon MIDI controller, laptop stands, cases, DJ drops, etc etc all sorts of things. We're always advertising products anyway, we just keep an eye out if someone is constantly posting about one product.

-1000.
I've just finished sorting out a bust-up that occurred after some people organized a trade over PM. It served as a perfect reminder as to why we have no interest in doing this.

so what happened with the private trade?
well at least u should be able to post about ur ebay sales/links. let ebay deal with it and not serato.
i dont understand the difficulty of just marketing here to get a better look from other people in ur industry to check ur stuff out.
like u could post the link... but no transactions over pm is allowed.

I understand your point Henry and can see how it would be beneficial to you - especially as you're a regular here and you know a lot of the other forum peeps.
But if a deal goes bad and the deal originated from serato.com we'll have mess to deal with.
People will blame us, point the finger, say we didn't warn them, let dodgy people use our service, got ripped off blah blah blah.
It'd be a lot of pain for something that serves no real strategic purpose for a little software company located at the bottom of the planet.
Sorry :-(

i just dont see a problem if its on ebay..
if it was a personal transaction on here. then fuck em..
but maybe there should be warnign sign before u enter the thread. kinda on a beta version of serato. that way u guys avoid all legalities.. and everyone is happy...
or maybe just make ti serato products. that way its in tune with the forum. just a suggestion..
i know alot of people would be happy..

True, that would less of a problem.
But it'd be a slippery slope that would require us drawing the line somewhere and require additional monitoring on our part.
For example, if someone was selling a hard drive full of dubiously acquired music on Ebay then linking to the auction on serato.com it'd be a bad look for us.
Yes, it's not directly our legal responsibility but we have business partners throughout the industry and it'd look bad if we didn't take some steps to remove links to those sorts of auctions.
That means more monitoring of the forum and more intervening when things get dodgy.
Just a small example (I can think of many more), but my take on it is that we can better use our time and resources for other things.

actually... nothing that comes to mind right now. but im sure there are alot out there. but when i used to run several chat rooms in MIRC, i had a ton of volunteers!
you know how many people on this forum care.. u would be amazed. and alot of the people would put aside their own egos and pride to help
but thnx for doubting the serato members. im sure everyone appreciates it.
