best studio monitors for under or around $800

Orbitalone 9:24 AM - 2 March, 2007
I am in the process of looking for my first set of monitors. My budget is around $800...I am going to be using them in a medium sized basement, no soundproofing etc...my main use is going to be for dj practice and also to record my live mixes/mixtapes. I spin mainly house, hip hop, and trance. I want quality speakers that produce the best sound for the buck, but I am still willing to shell out some dough. I have read the other posts but they mainly compared only a few specific models and told people to go demo them. It seems that every brand claims that they are the best and each has their own set of die hard followers. PLEASE HELP

I use these :

Brand: 'Event'
Model: PS 8
price: 250$ each
Description: 8" Project Studio monitors // bi-amped // self powered // balanced 1/4" and XLR inputs.

To me, they sound good and accurate. Good frequency response. good price.

I think the PS8's are discontinued... they have some called TR8's now that are really similiar. My buddy has the TR8's and I think they sound pretty good also.

I use Alesis ProLinear 820DSP. I love the way they sound. They have 8 different settings to make the speakers sound different. These are extremely clear.

Now the Mackie 828s are probably the most popular monitors for home use. Personally, I think they sound ok, but I like my Alesis monitors better.

These both run around $500 each. And self powered.

Well If it was me I wouldnt spend $800.. Id either spend less and get a lower end model or id just spend the $200 more and get the mackie 824s (which is what I did). Ive used the events, pro linears and the rockits.. the only ones worth considering from that list are the events IMO.
