Tracking Indicator Problems

djfx 8:54 PM - 27 February, 2007
I am experiencing tracking indicator problems on both turntables. They are both grounded correctly; however, they just suddenly developed problems (songs skipping and stuttering). SSL runs fine in INT mode, but REL always has problems. I've also noticed that the problem does not arise immediately, but it gradually gets worse during a mix. When I shut everything down, make sure everything is secure and fiddle around with the area where the ground wire connects to the turntables, it starts working again, but then the quality begins to deteriorate quickly. Is this a problem with the SSL box or does it seem like a problem with my turntables?

Thanks.

In the setup screen make sure you have "Phono" Selected and not "Line".
have you tested your threshold settings?

Nope, none, I'm using an iBook G4 and do not run anything besides maybe have AIM and Firefox open.

It also makes this very faint but high pitched buzzing noise when I put my ear to the needles. And when the buzzing comes ON, the tracking looks effed up again. So it looks like its a problem with the turntables.. but I don't know what it is.

what version of SSL are you using?

can you tell where the buzzing is originating? (in the turntable?)

1.7.1 and the buzzing is coming from the area where the needle meets the control vinyl.

It might be your needles. some problem arising as they heat up... THe buzzing is probably the needle hitting a resonant frequency which is destructive to the control signal.
