So a buddy of mine is selling his 17" G4 1.67GHz Powerbook and I was thinking about buying it to run Serato on. any Pros or Cons to this. Currently I'm running a Compaq V6000z 1.73 Core Duo. I I was wondering how people have their G4's configed regarding the USB Buffer. my Compaq is at 5 anything less causes interference. Would the G4 do any better? I do need a second computer and the price is right. Any help with this?

Core Duo 1.73GHz vs. G4 PPC 1.67GHz, you *will* be disappointed.
Backup machine? Better than nothing, if the price is really really good.

I have the same setup.
1.7 beta 2 has mad USB dropouts on my machine using the left USB port. I am sure this is a beta issue. You will be happy with any mac..;)

A refurbished 17" Powerbook is still going for $1599 at the Apple store. If you're getting it really cheap then why not?

you'll have no problem with that set up ... except for your personal preference of laptop size
I have a 12" G4 1.33 ... runs Serato like a dream

powerbook g4 do not have usb dropout problems. that is a macbook issue.
i have both g4 and core 2 duo machines. the core 2 duo systems are MUCH faster than an older g4, everything else being equal. however, i much prefer my g4 mac to a pc for djing. i use my g4 mac for djing almost exclusively, even though i have faster core 2 duo systems that i could use.

well in hardware wise there is not much diff..
software side.. the Mac os is more stable... butthat also b/c it written to work only on certain computer. and does not have to have code built into it to work on so many diff set ups.. thats what makes Windoz unstable is the fact that it has to be writen to work with so many diff set ups.....

for ssl? i doubt much difference at all. ssl doesn't really tax hardware all that much. you will not notice a difference between core duo and core 2 duo if using ssl.
use some software that really taxes hardware, processor bottlenecked software, and you'll see huge gains. 3d rendering, divx encoding, etc. also, some people (like me) need advanced processor features like vt extensions for software that requires vt.

Pro Tools vs. Logic. Hmmm. I think I've seen that flamewar and full flame before. I don't know enough about either to talk intelligently about either. I can tell you which has a bigger install base and which is used by more pros. I can tell you which looks nicer and runs on a better platform. Beyond that, I'm clueless.
