Hey guys

Just thought I would pass this on if you havent seen already. Seagate brought some new drives that are 80% faster than the 7200rpm drives. Half SSD half mechancial.

I thinking of getting a 500g check it out. Price isnt bad at all 149CDN for a 500g. I know a 7200 500g is 69 and a 640g is 94 CDN money

Anyways checkout let me what you all think

dang, thanks for this. I may get a 500 to replace my aging 320. anyone know of an elegant way to clone your existing HD for an easy upgrade or are you stuck reinstalling and reconfiguring everything? (in a laptop) is it possible to do anything without the HD physically installed and powered.

Is 4gb worth twice the cost??

Tech Level: somewhat high - Ownership: less than 1 day
Pros: A small amount of solid state added to a regular 500gb drive so it boots quicker.
Cons: Cost cost cost. This is still only going to write files to the disk drive at the same rate any other platter drive would write to memory, large files especially. 4gb is just not enough solid state space for much at all.
Other Thoughts: Come on guys, you only added 4gb of solid state to this drive. 4gb. The normal 7200rpm 500gb drive is about half of this cost. This one is almost double the cost for those 4gb's of solid state memory. Isn't this way overpriced for the small bootup speed you gain? This is not Newegg's fault but is this drive really worth it? I wonder.

none of the above!
and certainly not in a million years 5400 rpm disks
if you want the fastest speed go for an intel ssd
if you want max reliabilaty go for a hitachi disk

So your saying go either with a 100% SSD or 7200RPM mechanic drive dont bother half and half

I think that it'd be cool if the hybrid drive had 16GB or 32GB - enough to hold a Windows install, pagefile, AND app installs. With 4GB, about the only thing sped up is the pagefile or the (super small) Windows install. The system will NOT benefit from the speed increase.

It's like driving a 4 cylinder Ferrari or a Ford Fiesta with a Ferrari engine. To get the speed, you need the engine AND the transmission.

exactly!

AFAIK, you don't even NEED a fast hard drive - IF you ONLY use the computer for DJing. But I'd never recommend running with a slower drive. I can't believe that Macs are sold with 5400RPM drives.

... unless heat and/or noise is a problem. Who cares? GO FAST OR GO HOME!
