audio distortion when converting vob files

SMOKE DOGG BITCH 2:17 AM - 6 July, 2010
so for some reason some vob files i try to convert in handbrake with the serato preset i get audio distortion. anyone else have this problem or know why and what can i do. thanks
Joshua Carl 8:19 PM - 6 July, 2010
are you doing a 256 or 320 acc AUDIO?
SMOKE DOGG BITCH 8:52 PM - 6 July, 2010
The preset is set to 320
Joshua Carl 8:56 PM - 6 July, 2010
try a 192 AAC.

192 AAC is = 320 mp3.

certain programs will give you artifacts and distortion at 320/256 aac.
or try swapping to mp3 if your more comfortable with that medium
SMOKE DOGG BITCH 12:40 AM - 7 July, 2010
ill try that. thanks. do you know handbrake? is there an option for mp3. when i got into audio tab theres 3 aac options, but thats under the serato preset
SMOKE DOGG BITCH 3:49 AM - 7 July, 2010
that didnt do it. i tried 160 too
carter 1:03 PM - 9 July, 2010
It's probably the encoding of the source file audio. Handbrake will read some files and not read others. For those I use MPEG Streamclip. And no, there's not a way to switch it to mp3 audio.
SMOKE DOGG BITCH 10:06 PM - 10 July, 2010
so i should stop being cheap and pay the $20 for the codec for streamclip?
dj ivo 11:07 AM - 11 July, 2010
I am having same problem, most files convert well but those that you need the most dont seem to. I will check out this Streamclip and see how that goes..
SMOKE DOGG BITCH 3:25 AM - 13 July, 2010
so i broke down and paid the 20 bucks for the add on for streamclip. it does the trick. it allows me to open and convert the vob file. i export to mp4 but it makes a huuuuge file so i then convert in handbrake and it gets me were i like to be. hope this helps you out ivo with your problem. if you try it be sure to check the deinterlace box when converting and select 100% quality
carter 6:20 PM - 13 July, 2010
Hey smoke, adjust your settings in MPEG and you wont need to reencode with handbrake. I put up a breakdown of how I convert my vobs there. I'll post it below.
Drag and drop to vob, mpeg, or other video file to MPEG Streamclip window
File->Export to other format
Once the window is open:
Format: Mpeg4 then click options. File Format: MP4 (not ISMA), video format: h264, data rate and image size will be done on the main screen, frame rate: current, key frame every 20 frames. Video Options: Main, Single Pass (Faster Encode) click ok. Audio tab: AAC-LC (music), 224kbps, stereo, 48k, better. Click ok.
Back to the main screen click "Limit Data Rate." You can choose your own data rate. I use 3000 and adjust according to the file size I want. Frame size: Again personal choice. A lot of people choose the unscaled selection, which for PO would be 720x480. I use other and scale to 640x360 and then crop letterboxes. Leave frame rate blank (you've already selected current under options. I leave Interlaced scaling and reinterlace chroma unchecked and then check deinterlace ONLY after previewing and seeing if it actually needs deinterlacing. However with PO they pretty much all need to be deinteralced. Field dominance: Upper. Rotation: No. Zoom: 100%. If you use unscaled leave cropping unchecked. If you are wanting to get rid of the black bars select cropping. You will need to preview a few times to get the cropping exactly right. For the older PO videos you won't need to crop, but it WILL stretch the videos to fit if you don't. 60 off of the top and 60 off of the bottom will give you a perfect fit on those videos. The same can be done for the other videos as well, but you will still have some letterbox at the top of those. Also with PO you'll need to take about 8 off of each side too. No idea why they're there on some videos. After you've previewed and have everything set, I use Adjustments and check Automatic Volume Control.
I have mine saved as a preset that I labelled SSL. So anytime I load up MPEG I can go right to that preset and I only have to adjust cropping.
If you want to do a whole bunch of files at once, go back to the main screen of MPEG (where the main video window is). Click List and then Batch List. Now there are two ways to do this. 1. You can do it individually by going through the steps above and at the end of that sequence you will have a button that says "To Batch" instead of "Ok."
OR 2. you can click "Add Files" in the Batch window. It will then ask you what files. You can click on a whole folder or select individual files out of a folder. Once you have your files it will ask you to choose a task. Export to other formats and leave all of the others unchecked. It will then ask you where to export those files to. Once you've chosen that you are back at the settings window. Once you have the settings you want click "To Batch" and then in the batch window click "Go." There is also a space in the batch window to do simultaneous tasks. If you have a dual core or quad core you can do 2. I wouldn't go any higher than that. It's really taxing on your system.
SMOKE DOGG BITCH 8:19 PM - 13 July, 2010
thank you very helpful. the limit data rate is what did it. i didnt do anything with that and was geting like 300+ mb file sizes then i would use handbrake with the serato preset wich has the data rate at 2000 and then i get like a 70 and up mb file size
carter 7:59 PM - 14 July, 2010
Any help there dj ivo?
dj ivo 11:07 AM - 18 July, 2010
This is great carter, thank you so much :)
ToddLarBoy 7:19 PM - 19 July, 2010
I can't even get Streamclip to allow me to drag/drop into it. Do we know if it's compatible with Windows7?
ToddLarBoy 7:59 PM - 19 July, 2010
OK, so drag/drop didn't work, but I was able to convert my first file using these settings - Yah ME! Thanks Carter. I also noticed that Streamclip combined the files into a single file when I selected multiple at the same time. Now I'll have to see how to batch without it combining them
ToddLarBoy 10:48 PM - 19 July, 2010
1st Batch complete, but 16 of the 47 tracks came back with the error "Error: can't set data for the new movie" and a new file was created for each which was 0 bytes. Has anyone else encountered this error? Any ideas?
carter 4:43 AM - 20 July, 2010
Never seen that one.
SMOKE DOGG BITCH 10:51 PM - 27 July, 2010
that was gunna be my question. can i convert multiple files with out it coming out as one file carter?
carter 4:22 AM - 28 July, 2010
Yes. Had to pull some vobs from archive, but when you load the Batch List and click Add Files, a window will pop up and say "Please choose a task." That's where you will Export to Other Formats, and under that it has "join all the files." Uncheck that and you should be golden. Also leave the Fix Timecode breaks unchecked.
carter 4:24 AM - 28 July, 2010
And yes, it is compatible with Xp/Vista/7.
SMOKE DOGG BITCH 4:27 PM - 28 July, 2010
found it... i was going to open files instead of list then i saw to batch... omg its amazing
DJ Tecniq 9:32 PM - 28 August, 2010
this thread is a lifesaver, it helped me out so much with the vob's I couldn't convert in handbrake. Mpeg streamclip converted them just fine.
SMOKE DOGG BITCH 11:08 PM - 28 August, 2010
mpeg stream clip is one of the greatests finds. ive found so many other uses for it as well. the $20 plug in was worth every penny

seriously? It's $20... Buying it solved all of my problems with conversion. Even the MPEG Streamclip quicktime alternative still had a couple bugs that don't exist anymore.
I bought it both for PC and MAC so I can be batch converting twice as fast on different drives. But I don't mind $40 since we're talking about a $2500 MBP, a $1000+ PC, not to mention the $150 VSL, $700 SL3 and then whatever decks & mixer you use.

I seriously think for Streamclip we are talking about less than 1% of the total purchase price to be a VJ. Even less if you actually BUY your videos.

great response time buddy.
Orlando Gami 6:44 AM - 15 December, 2010
im sorry i just saw the post, im using the same settings as the "serato preset" on streamclip and still get better quality on handbrake with the same file size output. im working on a preset to get the same quality and file size that u would get with handbrake. i will post it as soon as i get it.

I am officially in love with you all. I thought I was CHOPPED and SCREWED!!! You really saved my booty with this thread, and I actually got a DJ residency with the video mixes I needed to work with Serato. I am coming from the VDJ world where latency blows but their video playability is off the chain. I have so many HD vob's that wouldn't play and I had to convert to MP4 format. I am hoping for the video SL update soon! Serato is the best, and I am looking forward working with it, but lets get some HD Support baby!!

If no one said thank you in a while, take this as all the thanks in the world for your time. You guys rock!

sweet.

I could have sworn MPEGStreamclip was free.

Maybe you guys are talking about the apple MPEG-2 component?
www.apple.com
djpuma_gemini 6:56 PM - 15 June, 2011
yeah mpegstreamclip is free, but it won't open vobs if you don't have that component. Screw apple for charging for it also.

I does but they cant be Vob's the gotta be mp4 or mov ... One thing that is good and a vault about vdj is it supports so many diffrents codecs and shit but imo its just asking for trouble playing a vob then mp4 then mpeg and so on, it makes more sense to have everything in 1 format so its less taxing on your system, its just a pain in the ass to get there lol
Dj_Nix 6:08 PM - 5 August, 2011
I don't see where I can set the key frame rate in mpeg slipstream... I'm on a mac could someone point me into the right direction please.
Dj_Nix 8:56 PM - 5 August, 2011
is the "set frame rate" box the same as setting a key frame rate? I ask b/c in this thread here --->serato.com it seems to be what they're speaking of... I don't see anything that specifically says key frame in mpeg slipstream.
phatbob 9:49 PM - 5 August, 2011
Did one the other day, you have to do 'covert to other formats', choose MP4, then set the keyframes rate in the codec options.

I am trying to convert MPEG 4 to Quicktime using MPEG Streamclip, but every time I try to convert, I get the error message "Can’t set data for the new movie." What am I doing wrong?
phatbob 5:15 PM - 25 January, 2012
You shouldn't be really converting an mp4 to anything, it's already compressed... What are you trying to do?
rward39571 5:15 PM - 25 January, 2012
I'm trying to edit on Final Cut Pro. FCP will bring in the video as it is, but I get no audio.
phatbob 5:27 PM - 25 January, 2012
Try exporting to Pro Res.
rward39571 5:28 PM - 25 January, 2012
OK, thanks.
