should i wait to get serato?

DHurl 10:56 PM - 26 December, 2006
i've been looking into getting serato for a whlie, and now that i just got a macbook, it is looking more likley than before. one thing that is holding me back though is that it cannot play AAC files. since i do most my music purchasing through iTunes, its a turnoff for me. i heard some talk about how AAC files may be incorporated into verson 1.7. so my question is should i wait because a new version may be comming out soon, or should i suck it up and burn 2000 CDs? (i tried doing that iMovie technique on wikipedia, it didn't seem to work since i transferred all the songs on my laptop now from the desktop. i'll try again though.) thanks guys.

well if you get stuff off of ITMS then they are protected files and you will have to re-encode them to unprotected files for any dj software to use it. they come from the music store as m4p files. ACC (nonprotected) files are m4a files. so you would have to burn the itunes music store files to cd and rip them back into your computer in whatever format you want (mp3 for most other programs other then iTunes) or use a program like this www.versiontracker.com with a CD-RW to do it for you. I have other DJ software that willplay ACC files... but non will pay the file downloaded from the iTunes Music store without somehow removing the DRM (the protection)

There are also other ways how you can legally convert your AAC DRM protected files, though it means work.

Regardless, you have to keep in mind that no DJ application is able to use iTunes files cause the are.. DRM protected. So unless you want to go with iTunes (which I dont call a DJ application) you are pretty much lost.

BTW, I might be wrong, but AFAIK there is no AAC support for 1.7 planned yet.

word word, thanks for the suggestions. so i guess just suck it up, convert the files, and use SSL?

yeah.. that program that i linked to is pritty good.. you just need a CD-RW to use it. It burns the trscks to the CD-RW then rips them back.. and sence its a cd-RW it just keeps usingthe same disc over and over to convert.

^^^ well thats one of the only programs that can automate the process legaly... there "might" be other programs out there to do it... but alot of those violate the TOS that came with iTunes

i didn't think macbooks had CD-RWs but now that i'm checking they do so niice man, i thought that was out of the question, but i guess not! i'll definitley check that out. appreciate it!

if you want to dj, stop buying music off of itunes. its drm and doesn't work in most dj setups.

if you spin house/techno/trance check out www.beatport.com

for urban (hip-hop, rap, reggae, etc) check out:

www.digiwaxx.com
www.hiphophits.net

also search the forum for other websites to get music. also you can rip existing cds that u already have or record wax.

DHurl, if you search this forum you will find a couple of applications which are able to handle those tracks w/o crdw burning. Bunring and re-ripping is a big hassle, as you also have to enter all the track information, like artist, song etc.

for real...there are MUCH better places to get music than itunes! besides, the quality at itunes is LOW. check out all the mp3 sites on this forum. right now you're p[aying too much for too poor sound quality music!

before you put that much wear & tear on your internal buner, get an external that way when it comes time to sell your mac & get a new one resale value will be better because your internal burner still works, plus its cheaper to replace an external than the internal.
