Who uses effects in their sets? Most DJ's I've heard lately don't use them at all, and these are guys that have the Pionner DJM 500 or 600. The way I see it, if the producer wanted you to hear a song a certain way, he would have put a filter here or dropped the EQ there.
I see alot of house/techno guys going crazy with eq's and filters. To me, it looks like they're putting on more of a show than actually adding anything artistically or musically to the track. Not all of it though is bad.
I've always wanted the "club standard" Pioneer DJM 600 or 800 but I see no need in spending all that money on effects I'll rarely or never use. That's why I can't wait for the new Mackie d.4 mixer to come out. I'm surprised someone didn't make a 4 channel mixer without effects a long time ago.
I may be wrong but when the Pioneer effects box came out not too long ago, people were really excited about it. Now I think the price may have even dropped. Also, kind of on the same subject, I've noticed a dj here and there that drops the bass on the incoming track of a mix. Why? To avoid a trainwreck?
Well that's just me rambling on X-mas eve....Bored!

Uh my bad. Allen & Heath make nice mixer without all those crazy effects. I've seen their filters in action. Nice. Just a little too pricey for me. Waiting on d.4

I kinda want an efx 1000 just to see what I can incorporate into a set...and dropping the bass just adds a little something to your set; I mean you can straight beatmatch it but why not have a little fun?

Thats what it does for me... adds to the fun of it. Its all about your mixing style and chances are that if you had not used one up to this point you probably don't need to get one. Its just icing on the cake I think.

I occasionally drop the bass on an incoming track if the blend is off a bit. It saves me but that's in the worst of situations.

Using echo/delay while scratching creates some cool effects. You can also use echo/delay to drop out a track into the next. But it has to fit right and don't do it on every blend. The more tools in your arsenal the better you'll sound. That is if you practice with these tools and know when it's correct to use them.

i have an efx-500 with my ttm 56. i use the effects every once in a while. lots of radio stations here in socal (mainstrean hip hop) use it in thier sets.
what i hate is when dj's use it ALL THE TIME to make up for something else. ive heard dj's use the Jet and flanger effect on an entire song and using the echo on every snare. it gets annoying.

Is there a big difference between the 500 and 1000? My next upgrade is an EFX unit but I don't know if I should shell out the extra cash for the 1000....any suggestions?

quick question about the efx 500. I was wondering how to hook it up so where if i turn the efx on for one turntable, how do I get it not to affect the second turntable. I can never figure this out.

you need to have an effects (send/return) ins and outs on your mixer. on your mixer, you need to have a seperate efx switch for each channel or a knob that allows you to effect a desired channel.
Somebody fabbed up something that allowed them to do it on mixers that don't have send/return ins and outs. If you don't want to go the "McGuiver" route, then it's time to buy a new mixer I'm afraid...

I have Numark 5000fx (Only cause it was $430 w/employee discount instead of $599) and i hardly ever over use the effects. That only one i find truley useful is echo for doing drop ins to speed ip to a much higher bpm. The filters are ok if you know how to uaed them right too i guess. The main thing i like is the sampler with the looper. That things great for dropping samples or beats to scratch on.
