so im djing for matel toy company last saturday and this dj comes up to me and tells me that he was supposed to dj but the company didnt want him to cuz they wanted him to have fun. so im like ok well sorry. so im trying to dj and im not even 10 minutes into playing music (disco at that time) and he comes up to me and was like man your gonna have to play cumbia music cuz there is 90% mexicans here. so i tell him im going to play what was agreed on when i was booked witch was 70's 80's hip hop and some salsa. so im playing for a little longer and i get into some salsa and the floor of course gets jammed with people. and he comes up to me again and was telling me that is i want to keep them dancing i have to play this all night. so i lie to him and tell him i only had about 30 to 40 minutes of spanish music. so im getting to my end of the salsa set (elvis, and celia cruiz songs mainly. and the fool comes back with cds from his car so at this point im kinda like what should i do just tell him to leave me alone im getting paid to play and im gonna play what i want or to tell him ok ill play it in a minute. so i tell him the ill see what u got in a minute. so i get into some hip hop and im into it maybe 30 minutes floor is packed and i notice he keeps coming up to me to see what the next song im gonna play is. and everytike i get ready to play another song he tells me what song i should play but than when i play the song i have cued and people are still dancing he tells me oh thats a good song. so at this point hes anoying me but im at a company party and trying to keep it profesional. so after my night is over im winding down and he comes up to me and tells me oh man you did a pretty good job im not mad u held it down. than he gets into this whole thing that he is a supposed dj for a club in montebello. qc's. and that how i should get cd players thats all he uses and that he like it cuz he can be lazy and the cd players he has costed 3,000 each and they do almost everything for him so he can be lazy and still make money. and about how he puts in premixed cd's and all this. so at this time im like man this guy was telling me what i should play all night bugging me and he plays premixed cd's. and i kinda want to know if i should have just told him to fuck off maybe piss him off but hopefully get the point that i dont need his help. or if i did right by just giving him the ill play it in a minute line over and over. has anyone else ever had this problem. this is one of my pet peaves when another dj just bugs u about what to play and what u should do and all that. my second biggest pet peave is when some dumb ass will stand right next to you for hours just watching every song u pick and mix and not say a word just kinda stand there. it freaks me out but i always try to avoid arguing or confrontation while im djing just because its not profesional and one person/ episode can change the chances of you getting another job or referal.
