speakon connectors

ejayian 2:51 AM - 19 December, 2006
I just started using speakon connectors, we have a couple of very long 1/4 inch speaker wires thats a bitch to roll up if we ever use them. Is it okay to chop the cord up & use speakon connectors to connect them together when additional length is needed?

it should not be toooooo big of an issue....

i wish i did that.... man, 100 feet per side gets pretty hairy....especially when i usually have my stuff no further than 15 feet away (i know...overkill)

Ejayian. Its actually easy to swap out connectors on wire. It shouldn't take more than 15 min per cable. I love speakon, never had a single problem with them.

speakon.... no soldering required, just need a philips and/or flat head screw driver.

But he's not talking about swapping the connectors...

He's wanting to cut up the cable and piece meal it together as needed.

NO. I don't recommend it. Too many things can go wrong. Stick to a single cable but maybe swap out the ends if you want to move to speakons.

Think of it this way. Would you cut up an extension cable, put new ends each new piece and then plug them into each other just to make the extension cable easier to handle? I wouldn't. I'd get shorter cables for when I don't need the long runs and I'd use the 'beast' only when I absolutely need it.

lol i did that....mostly b/c it was cheeper to buy a realy long power cable and get some ends and make 4 shorter cables from long one.... Yes there is more room for stuff to go wrong.... but then again.. if you only have 2 100 foot cables and you only need a 15 foot cable and one goes bad.. you dont have backups.. if you have smaller cables.. then you have back up cables!

I was actually gonna do both. SInce upgrading my amps all of them now are speakon compatible, in fact one of them is strictly speakon, so yeah I was gonna swap connectors at least on one side of all the cables, I loved the fact that no soldering was involved.

And yes I was thinking of piece mealing the loooong one when needed because although I wouldnt do it for regular extension cables the fact that with speakon you need to move the switch & twist to disconnect got me thinking of chopping that beast up....

LOL thats a good tip for someone whos just starting out & is going to buy cables, save money in the long run.

I guess another benefit from chopping the beast is Im only going to use a length of cable I need. My cables are either 25 footers or 100 footers, how many times have i used the 100 footer because my 25 footer was 5 feet to short LOL

I can appreciate the to many things going wrong theory but with speakon it sort of takes it out of the equation although not completely out its a little bit better.

Now if you tell me having too many speakon connectors will add distortion to the sound I may have to rethink chopping it up.

might add a little... but if you keep it down to one or 2 joints in the cable run.. you should be ok!

i liked the locking feature of speakons.... bannana plugs / and 1/4" jacks always seemed to find it's way loose (especially when i trip over em....never thought of taping dem chords down in tha past with gaffers tape)

My Amp and speakers both use nothing but speakon, i love it. No more cords getting yanked out. I ended up buying some really nice Ev speakers last week to replace my old crappy Peaveys.

Cords getting yanked out??? What happened to looping the cables around the stand leg or around the upper shaft of of a speaker stand? What happened with running the cables and taping them down in doorways - taped along baseboards and running them under entry carpets to ensure they're away from peoples feet? I also loop the cables around the legs of my dj booth's stand. I think a speaker cable costs alot less to repair/replace than a toppled over speaker or a seriously torgued up speaker connector. I to enjoy the click/twist of a speakor, but never did I ever have trouble with a tripped over speaker wire that resulted in a loss of audio.
