Debating dropping iPhone for HTC Incredible.......

BriChi 9:35 PM - 24 April, 2010
So what do you guys think?

I have been waiting for a good enough phone to come to Verizon so I can finally drop ATT's shitty service in my area (Long Island, NY). Now that the HTC Incredible is about to drop next week and the phone looks SICK, I was debating switching. The new iPhone 4G with 4.0 really does not look to special so I doubt I would even want it, the only up it has IMO is the front facing camera which I think is kinda useless, either way, it's still on ATT (unless they announce a Verizon iPhone which in that case we probably won't see it till next year anyway)

I always value the opinions of you guys on the forum so let me know what ya think...

plenty of youtube vids on the Incredible if you guys wanna watch first b4 commenting
Turn Table Tennis 1:35 AM - 25 April, 2010
front facing camera is going to be for skype use.

I thought it was interesting how IMP the new iPhone seems to look more like other phones being made...
Certified Quality Entertainment 7:08 PM - 30 April, 2010
Hey Bri, did you go look at the incredible?

I went during lunch just to play with it for a bit, not that I am getting verizon, but I just wanted to see b/c I am debating the HTC Evo on Sprint when it comes out and it will be comperable. I thought it was OK, felt a little laggy though when scrolling through apps and stuff. I opened one or two and they seem to open quickly. Seems decent but I wasn't OVERLY impressed. Maybe that's just me though.
I'm on my palm pre that I have patched and bumped up speed and i'm absolutly loving it 10000x more than when it was stock.

BriChi 10:04 PM - 30 April, 2010
hahahaha, I play with it all the time...

I LOVE the phone, I preordered and got it yesterday. The ones in the stores are laggy for some reason, probably because 1000 people play with it and open up every app so there are 100 things running and the live background too..

Mine is not laggy at all, everything super smooth and fast, makes my iPhone seem like a 2 year old ancient toy, So i ported the number to Verizon and am a VERY happy Incredible owner... Apps are great too, downloaded a bunch especially the mp3 amazon store, just download a song, plug the HTC into my CDJ2000 and play the track right from it because the phone acts like an external HD

Unless the iPhone comes to Verizon, Verizon has exclusive rights to use Skype. So the front facing camera won't be used via Skype, most likely some other program.
Rebelguy 9:52 AM - 1 May, 2010
Doesn't matter. From what I have read the video conferencing on the new iphone will only be over wifi. That kind of blows.

I picked up the Incredible. Thing is pretty insane. I miss my bbm on my blackberry but its time to evolve.

hearing good news about the incredible makes me excited for the evo. i'm waiting for that. coming from a nokia n95 on tmo edge to the evo on 4g is gonna be such a major difference.

I have an HTC dual touch and my wife has an iPhone. I'm an idiot. Get an iPhone.
westell54 12:44 AM - 2 May, 2010
Supposedly the Verizon iPhone is slated for September. Keeping in mind that with Apple you can never really tell until they make it official or until it shows up on store shelves. If they do end up getting it, ATT can go to hell. If I'm gonna pay too much money for a cellphone I'd rather do it with a company that has great service like Verizon.
Kenny Q 12:04 PM - 3 May, 2010
Can you sync iCal, iPhoto and Mac mail easily with the incredible?
BriChi 12:25 PM - 3 May, 2010
Mac mail (as in me.com?) should be fine along with ical, as far as iphoto, you just drag the pics onto the phone and it shows up in "photos", No need to have to use itunes to constantly sync..

I use gmail and an exchange work account so everything wirelessly syncs perfect for me on the Inc.
Kenny Q 4:17 PM - 3 May, 2010
Brian,
How much was the phone? $200?
What software is used to listen to music?
What is the maximum amount of memory you can buy?

Thanks

It's built in just like the iPhone, HTC media player
8gb is on board and 32gb of micro SD

dj hes 9:04 PM - 3 May, 2010
how much is the monthly for Verizon with Data plan vs. AT&T?

I am waiting for the 4G Evo as well, it is being promoted pretty heavily.
Rebelguy 12:04 AM - 4 May, 2010
Verizon and AT&T are about the same.

The other thing to remember is that there are only a small amount of 4G markets for Sprint. Unless you are on the list then you really have no benefit.
Certified Quality Entertainment 12:32 AM - 4 May, 2010
^^ other than a cool phone. I have a feeling a lot of ppl may buy it just because its a cool phone. Just like the HTC Inc for verizon.

I was really debating the Evo but I just tweaked my Pre and its freakin awesome. Once they get some more apps (more coming every day), it is just as good if not better than any other phone out there.

I was looking at the Pre Plus and WebOs seems pretty dope but I have been hearing the major problem with the phone is not the software but the hardware. Maybe things will change with HP manufacturing for them.
Certified Quality Entertainment 1:15 PM - 4 May, 2010
^^Hopefully. WebOS is really something special, I've had my Pre for afew months now and I can't imagine using somethign else. It is very intuitive, easy and fun to use. Keeping all of your apps open together, switching back and forth is nice. Notifications on the bottom of the screen that don't interupt what you are doing. Its really cool. My first pre I got off ebay so it had a little oreo effect (where the two sliders start to twist off from each other). I took it back to sprint and they replaced it for free even without insurance. Havent had a single problem with my replacement one.
Kenny Q 2:43 PM - 4 May, 2010

How can I sync this stuff with an Android phone?

Thats good to know, i have an upgrade for my wife, she needs a phone that is easy to use, the pre looks nice, i would think there is a pre 2 coming out soon. My Touch Pro 2 is the flagship sprint phone, and i have to say. it sucks. one thing i am getting sick of is the HTC imposed OS over top of Windows Mobile. it is confusing to the users. you can access a HTC calendar view or txt msg view, and you can access the Windows view also, its super over kill.

I am hoping the Android version of an HTC phone doesnt have this issue.
Certified Quality Entertainment 4:22 PM - 4 May, 2010
Yea I would think the Pre 2 or at least Pre plus should hit sprint sometime soon. Pre is going to be a year old come June so they really should have somethign new down the pike. i was debating the Evo but I don't know if I like the HTC sense that they put over the android platform. WebOS really is dope, and with all of the tweaking you can do to it, it really makes it hard to beat. If you want some info go to precentral.net Its like the scratchlive forum for pre's lol. They have everything you need to know about your pre, what upgrades and tweaks you can do, etc.
That site really helped me otherwise I wouldn't like my pre as much as I do.
Kenny Q 4:28 PM - 4 May, 2010
I thought that Palm was going out of business.
I still use the Palm Treo 700p without web or email acess.
I'm waiting for the Verizon iPhone or possibly a Droid phone.
Certified Quality Entertainment 4:32 PM - 4 May, 2010
HP just bought Palm so now they have tons of money! lol
From what I have been reading, HP is full steam ahead backing palm and its products and developing them into new things. Maybe a tablet pc with WebOS to compete with the iPad.

Not sure but here is what I do know, I use exchange mail for work which means it is on my jobs server and pushes email, contacts and calender to my phone so I can sit at my desk, log into Outlook and do what I need to and it automatically syncs with my phone and vice versa.

Also, I use gmail which does the same thing, I can manage all my gmail contacts and calender and it syncs automatically with the phone, no need to connect it to the computer

As far as iCal and Addressbook, I I exported my calender from iCal and imported it to google and am using that for now on. The addressbook with sync with GMail if you set it up to, u can go into Addressbooks pref's and tell it to sync over the air
skinnyguy 7:16 PM - 4 May, 2010
i've been trying to keep up on the evo bit. seems like a lot more places are going to be covered with Sprint's 4G by the time they officially release it.
dj hes 9:54 PM - 4 May, 2010
Some of the specs of the HTC Evo:

HDMI output!
720p Video camera
2 cameras: 1 8MP on back 1 3MP i think) on front
Youtube HD
Can use as a hotspot to connect up to 8 other devices!
4.3 inch screen

Same Processor and UI as the Incredible, so it will be pretty fast.

This is pretty much the same as the Incredible.

As far as a Pre replacement...I wouldn't count on it too soon. The deal with HP still has to get cleared and it's not scheduled to close at least until June. After that you have to wonder whether HP will finance whatever Palm had in the works, want to start from scratch or port it over to a phone they may have been working on. The Slate with WebOS installed sounds very interesting.

As far as the Sprint 4G markets for 2010: Cincinnati, Cleveland, Los Angeles, Miami, Pittsburgh, Salt Lake City and St. Louis. They will also open it up to Denver, Kansas City, Houston, Minneapolis, New York, San Francisco and Washington, D.C. Probably 2011 though. By then Verizon will be starting to roll out their LTE service which will blow away Sprints 4G.

Yea, i don't think anything new will come out from the HP version of Palm, but there has been a lot of talk about a new Palm device coming out prior to the acquistion by HP. The C40 or C60, something like that is supposed to be Palms new hardware device. A year later they really should have something new on the market for sprint, especially since they have had hardware issues and lots of returns, but who knows.

HP Slate with WebOS would be a home run if you ask me. I think it would destory the iPad IMO

Exchange mail is Microsoft's corporate email software. If you don't work at a company that uses Exchange mail, then don't worry about syncing. FYI: The Moto Droid has issues with syncing Exchange email natively. The only way I got it to work is to use an app called Touchdown. The Incredible I heard support Exchange mail and syncing natively.
Boba Tha Hut 5:35 PM - 5 May, 2010
BTW Exchange email is PUSH supported via Exchange ActiveSync. That's how Palm Pre and iPhone and Win Mobile phones are able to get Exchange email pushed.

Also, if you don't have an Exchange email account, it's not like gmail or yahoo mail where you can sign up for one. Your company has to have it set it up and create a mailbox for you.
Gamble 6:12 PM - 5 May, 2010
i've been looking into the phone but i heard the battery is absolutely horrible...to even use the phone during the course of a full day, you need app killer on hand. Thoughts?
BriChi 6:36 PM - 5 May, 2010
people dnt understand that batteries get better after a couple of full cycle charges, like any forum, you are reading from the handful of people that own the phone. I have had the phone almost a week and the phone battery right now is A LOT better then out of the box. I have had it off the charger for 8 hours, made phone calls, plenty of texting and email back and forth (exchange work main and gmail) and the battery is only at 70%, mu iPhone by now is always around 40-50 so the battery for me anyway is better then what my iphone was, Plus they are releasing 1750MAH batteries that are the same size IF you feel like you neesd the extra 30-40% life throughout the day.
Gamble 6:44 PM - 5 May, 2010
Good to know, thanks for the heads up. Do you use app-killer as well?
BriChi 6:48 PM - 5 May, 2010
I did at first but then read that just because an app is sitting in the background doesn't mean its running. It goes into a paused state so whether you kill it or not is irrelevant so I haven't used the app killer in days and its fine. More time then not app killers kill things that should run so its better not to use it.
BriChi 6:49 PM - 5 May, 2010
And btw, all this had been read and typed from the phone. The browser is amazing and fast.

Most of the higher end phones are going to have battery issues. I am not sure why people are expecting long battery life but demanding faster processors. Most of the new Android phones are going to be using the Snapdragon processor so you can expect a similar battery life for all of them. The Incredible can make it through the day. With the extended battery probably longer. Simple solution...get a car charger and extra charger for work. Also if you don't need gps and wifi then turn them off.
skinnyguy 4:47 AM - 6 May, 2010

There are tools which can tunr off wifi and GPS etc. based on configurable criterias. Like

If PHONE is near HOMELOCATION switch WIFI ON, switch DATA OFF, switch to 2G.
If PHONE leaves HOMELOCATION switch WIFI OFF, switch DATA ON, switch to 3G.

Very handy stuff which you can do.

what I mean is people like to kill wireless when not in use so it is not always scanning for networks while driving, so if you use the app like you are talking about that turns wireless on and off based on you being home, then isn;t that doing pretty much the same scanning for it to know when you are home? Therefore, it is running somehow in the background to know where you are..

And like Rebelguy said, you don't need to root it, there are apps for task killing like "advanced task killer" (Free)
Rebelguy 9:00 PM - 6 May, 2010

I am still unsure about your question. Sounds like there are three issues:

1. killing a process
2. switching of a (operating system) service
3. checking your location

1. This tool does not kill a process (and least in my example there is no need to kill a process)
2. Turning of GPS, 3G data etc. might be just a service (I havent gotten into the details of Android yet). However AFAIK you can safely disable GPS etc. without causing harm.
3. In this case the location is determined not by GPS, not by WiFi, it is determined by the phone providers transmitter (the downside is that the resolution of your location is determined by the size of the covered area per transmitter. Since I live in the city this is no issue - there are dozens of transmitters. This means that the grid determined by the number of transmitters per area is not so coarse. Could be an issue outside cities)
BriChi 11:15 AM - 7 May, 2010
yeah, true, the wifi searching is not really a process running but a service, either way I believe people shut it off because it is always scanning to look for available wifi's no?

If so, then wouldn't the app you are talking about that knows when you are home or not pretty much do the same thing or does it work over GPS? even so if it is GPS then GPS has to be on all the time which I leave off when not in use, Just another service running I don't need most of the time
nik39 11:44 AM - 7 May, 2010
Quote:

Yep. Waste of batteries. At least in Germany there are only very few open WiFis because it is legally complicated if someone abuses your network to do bad things.

That's what I was trying to explain here:

It is using the phone network transmitter ID. As said this only gives a coarse position, but it is sufficient in cities and if you are trying to distinguish between locations which are far away. The phone network transmitter at my office is a different one than the one at home. But if I am outside in the backyard I will be using the same phone network transitter as inside in my appartment. So this does not work always but still covers 90% of my use cases. Sufficient enough to save batterie power significantly for me :)

Yo Kenny. Do it brother. You will not be disappointed. I would call it an Iphone Killer. To my surprise. I got it on Friday when I got home. I have not been able to put it down since. I was late to my gig on Friday because of this damn phone. I will check on the Google calendar for you, and all phone's that I know of, have insurance plans if you choose to. nik39 9:05 AM - 11 May, 2010
The only thing which I dislike about Android phones are the fact that they have very limited features out of the box. You *must* install different apps to enhance the function set. There are so many functions which a Nokia/Symbian phone has out of the box which Androids do not have. I heard it's less of an issue with the HTC phones since HTC add their own software package tools.

IF you want a phone to be working out of the box - I would currently stay away from Android phones.
BriChi 11:14 AM - 11 May, 2010
Yeah Nik, the HTC Incredible is great out of the box, I am really not sure what features you are talking about being that the HTC is my first Droid phone (came from 3 yrs on the iPhone) but I had to install nothing to enjoy the phone out of the box. Anything in particular you are talking about I should look out for?
nik39 11:49 AM - 11 May, 2010
- no diverted calls indication (applies to all Android phones)

- text input not supporting t9 when writing texts/sms (on the Droid that is. The HTC has a much much better input support, gladly someone repackaged it for the Droid (google for HTC_IME) - excellent stuff)

- default homescreen is terrible, unergonomical (I am using "home++" which has favourites at the bottom)

- workflow when trying to call someone is terrible. I don't have a problem with changes but there are too many buttons you have to press until you can call someone from your favorites list. It slows you down.

- you can't change the delay time until someone is forwarded to your voicebox (you have to use cryptic GSM messages)

- setting up the reminder sucks. You have to go through dozens of menus to setup a reminder

- searching someone from your contacts ... c'mon... how many buttons do I have to press?

- profiles! C'mon... no profiles support? Is there only one setting to disable the ringtone and one setting to disable vibration? Tsk.

Coming from an easy and intuitive to use Nokia/Symbian phone... these are the things from the top of my head.

There are solutions to most of the mentioned issues... but you have to research a lot to try and find the correct apps which add the missing features.

Oh and I am surprised that the call divertion indication is not supported by Android at all. I don't understand how Android is able to attack the business market with all these missing features. Esp. business people do not have the time to tweak their stuff. They want their equipment to be working out of the box-
BriChi 12:25 PM - 11 May, 2010
yeah, I think a lot of that was improved on the Inc., Again, this is my first Droid phone so I am not sure how bad theprevious ones were but the Inc. is great, I have GMail and exchange mail working great on it and no issues at all, THe only app I downloaded that I liked better then the stock app was Handcent for sms because I liked it better then the default app.

fortuantely for me most of the gripes you have with Droid I don't, Like call divertion, never needed to use it so no big deal if it's not on my phone.
nik39 1:30 PM - 11 May, 2010
Sure, I understand that. It is just important for me personally (and frankly... even my Nokia from 1998 supported that feature) because I need to know whether a call is directly for me or has been diverted from my office for example.
BriChi 1:36 PM - 11 May, 2010
yeah, I understand, It sucks when u are used to a feature on a current phone and a new one doesn't have it. I hated that even when I jumped from my BB to the iPhone that could not copy and paste, it drove me nuts that such an innovative device (as apple put it) could not do a common task like that

I went to look at the Incredible last night. I don't know anything about Android software but it doesn't look half as good and organized as my iPod touch.
The person who sits next to me bought one and will get it within a week. I'm going to mess with his phone before I decide to get one.

It sucks that Verizon doesn't have iPhone.
Kenny Q 12:00 PM - 12 May, 2010
What are some of the advantages that the incredible has over the iPhone?
BriChi 12:29 PM - 12 May, 2010
1. gps is A LOT better,
2. way faster
3. multiple scenes so you can setup all 7 screens for work releated stuff, then setup another whole scene with 7 other screens for weekend play stuff
4. much cleared screen
5. much better camera
6. user replaceable/upgradeable battery (doesnt matter to me but some people like that they can swap batteries if they are heavy users)
7. widgets are awesome, you can add lets say a bookmarks widget which takes up one of your pages, scroll to the page and click on the ic of your preferred page to go to liek Serato. I have a calender widget on another page, and a friendstream one which links my F.B. and twitter accounts to one and keeps the stream updated instead of having to go into the actual twitter or fb app just to see updates
8. multitasking works great, for instance the other day I was going from job A to job B via GPS while listening to Pandora and text messaging
9. weather app is pretty cool too with live updates, when you wake the phone it will actually play an animation based on where you are, either rain will fall, clouds will pass by the screen, it's silly but it looks cool..
10. Speaker quality blows the iPhones away
11. pich to bring out all pages and quickly jump to another is fast and easy whan you want to jump quickly to a certain page, simply pinch the screen, all 7 pages come up and you tap on the page you want to go to
12. seems to be thinner and lighter
13. did I mention this thing is FAST
14.. my biggest reason, IT'S ON VERIZON!!.

The iPhone is great, had it for the last 3 years but ATT is killing me, especially lately, it seems like it is getting worse. Where I work I pretty much have no service or very little and my boss was getting a little pissed that he couldn't reach me a lot (which was fine with me, LOL)

My brother recently bought the incredible and I was messing around with the phone yesterday. I couldn't believe how fast you could go thru screens and look thru pictures. He said it has a 1GB Ram Processor lol. If that's true, I wouldn't mind trading in my tour for one of these bad boys. The only thing that sucks is the battery life. That and the lack of Blackberry Messenger. :(
BriChi 3:04 PM - 13 May, 2010
it is a snapdragon 1ghz processor,very fast

the battery is fine now, it took a couple of cycles but mine easily lasts me all day, I will be throwing verizons 2150 battery in when it is releases which only adds 1mm thickness to the phone which is less then a penny thick, the phone comes with 1300mah battery so the 2150 is a good upgrade
DeezNotes 4:28 PM - 13 May, 2010
I have an Eris which is older and much slower than the Incredible. After rooting it, I have been able to overclock it to get it running much faster. My battery dies quickly if I'm using GPS a lot (Google Navigation) and also if I'm streaming radio (Pandora or Droid Live).

Task killers don't really seem to do much for decent applications. It's the apps that use data in the background that'll hurt you. For example, if I'm looking at Google Maps with GPS enabled and I switch apps, the GPS indicator goes away. It will come back when I go back to Google Maps and my location will then update.

There is an application (AutoKiller) that modifies the timeout limit to close applications that are running in the background which seems to be somewhat effective, but it may only be for root users?

Something else I like about Android phones is that I can download apps without having to be connected to a computer. I can also download an app directly from a browser if I wanted to. Now that I have root access, any application that I download I can back it up to my SD card just in case. The only problem with that is it doesn't link the app to the Market (which will show that it is installed), but I can run Titanium Backup to backup everything on my phone and selectively restore what I want.

Most people may not need root access since they may not mess with any of this stuff, but it's a nice option. And like nik said, if you want a different home screen or keyboard, you can install it right along side your current one and switch back/uninstall if you don't like it. I use Helix Launcher instead of HTC Sense. I also use the Android Music player instead of the HTC Music player (it shows the song listing much easier). Swype is nice, but I find myself switching between that and different keyboards. Right now I'm using Smart Keyboard Pro, which is somewhat similar to the stock HTC keyboard, but with more configuration options.

Other apps I use over the stock apps are Dolphin Browser HD, Gmail, Handcent SMS and Beautiful Widgets. Oh, and linking my voice mail to Google Voice is dope too. It'll transcribe the voice mail message (which doesn't always work) and I can listen using my data connection instead of calling my voice mail (I guess that's what visual voicemail is.. but this is free?).

Since I'm already writing a long ass post... I also use: AK Notepad, Barcode Scanner, ES File Manager, ES Task Manager, FiOS Mobile, Google Goggles, Google Translate, Key Ring, Movies (it also manages your Netfilx queue), Reuters News, Pandora, Screebl (a MUST have!!), Shazam, Spare Parts (to see what's eating at my battery), Stickam viewer, Trapster, WeatherBug, Yelp and Zillow.

Overall, HTC and Android is a kick ass combination IMO.
Kenny Q 8:40 PM - 13 May, 2010
What accessories do you recomend.
I'm looking for a very good earpiece, a screen cover, the biggest memory card that I can get, a larger battery, 2 car chargers (I have 2 cars), and 2 ac adaptors (for home and work).

Thanks in advance.
BriChi 10:17 PM - 13 May, 2010
you're going to spend more in that then you pay for the phone, LOL

it holds up to a 32gb micro sd card so that would be good (40gb total storage then) unless 16gb is still the biggest you can buy right now

I went to Best Buy and got the car charger for like $20

Seidio has the 1750mah battery right now for $50 (phone comes with 1300mah) that is the same physical size, then there is a 2150mah battery coming out soon which is 1mm thicker (smaller then a penny) and seidio also has like a 3500mah battery but it makes the phone a lot thicker
DJ Schematic 12:41 PM - 14 May, 2010

This phone surprises me more and more every day. I’m able to view and download video tracks from all my video pools. I downloaded 5 videos last night at the same time, it finish all 5 videos in 20min. I’m so hype about this, because I sometimes don’t have time to be at home going throw all my pools and downloading. Now that I can do this from the palm of my hand on the go. Is such a time savor for me. All I have to do is transfer the videos as soon as I hop on my Mac. I didn’t have the Ipone, but I do have a IPod Touch, and it wasn’t able to view any video from my pools, or even be able to download from them. This is truly an incredible phone. I already have two buddies in the process of canceling there contracts with AT&T and selling there iphones, to sign up with Verizon to get this phone. LOL!!

guys, you have to install ShapeWriter, It's the swype keyboard like the Samsung keyboards, So cool and easy to use, I love it!

Also, use YouMail for visual VM, I cancelled the VVM from verizon and use this instead, it's free and works great
nik39 2:02 PM - 21 May, 2010
I don't like ShapeWrite or Swype. It slows me down too much. My preferred keyboards:

T9 with HTC_IME mod for text messages
Hardware keyboard for anything else.

Get a Google Voice account at voice.google.com (you may need an invite? i'm not sure).

I can't remember the details of the setup, because it takes you through a wizard... but basically what it does is it forwards any non-answered calls directly to your Google Voice Mailbox. So, when a call goes to voice mail, it goes directly to your Google Voice mail (it does not go to Verizon voice mail - which is my carrier). When someone leaves a voice mail message, I get a Google Voice alert and I can also configure it to get an email with the voice mail as an attachment, as well as an SMS. Different carriers may have different settings to set up your forwarding for non-answered calls, but for us it's *71 or something like that. The Google Voice setup wizard takes you through all the steps needed.

You can also set it to ask if you want to make calls via Google Voice when you make a call if you want to call people from your Google Voice number. That's useful for calling people who you don't want to have your actual cell number.

I just bought the Incredible on Saturday for FULL RETAIL since I'm not due for an upgrade until March. Came out to like $650 with tax and everything but my girl has a Best Buy card, I'll just pay $200 for the next few months, no biggie.

This phone is AMAZING, it does so much shit my blackberry couldn't do. I'm glad I made the jump. This phone should hold me over until my contract expires, then I could get the next best phone that will be out (whatever that will be)

Only thing I can't find so far is an app that uses the LED lights like my Blackberry did. The white screen isn't bright enough, I need those LEDs to work.

I think the Sprint Evo is better then the iphone. The Incredible is not as feature filled but you get way better service on Verizon. Do you need to video conference or edit videos on your phone?
skinnyguy 7:45 PM - 8 June, 2010
lovin my evo so far =)

and battery is fine too. if used normally, it'll last all day, no sweat. if you're a power user, of course battery will drop quickly. even my old nokia n95 did that.

i always leave gps on. most of the time i have 4g off. 3g works great for everything. i turn on 4g when i really want faster stuff. i have yet to experiment with leaving 4g on all day. perhaps tomorrow...
dj hes 8:27 PM - 8 June, 2010
Skinnyguy, how is your 4G coverage, have you ran a speed test to see what type of speeds you are getting? Im only getting 2/3 bars of 4G and I get about 2Mpbs downloads and 1.3 upload. Not bad, but not near the 3-6 mbps they said! regardless its super fast.

I am totally sold on the Evo! the phone is sick, like the incredible, the android OS is money, and everything is super fast. The only issue i see is the battery life, for me, i charge at work and at home, so its ok, but even with that it runs out really fast when all data services are up. I am sure i can conserve battery if i tried though, just my initial thought if i am connected 24/7.

Now i just need to figure out how to set up root access to tether. (a big downfall fro me since i had an app that could tether on my winmo.
BriChi 9:20 PM - 8 June, 2010
for the record, i am not impressed with the iPhone 4, so what, Apple added stuff other people have been doing for months and even years, The only somewhat impressive thing is video chatting but I know I would NEVER use it, for 1, it only works on wifi, if I am home, have wifi and want to video chat, ill just use my macbook that is always right in front of me :)..
BriChi 9:22 PM - 8 June, 2010
also, my buddy just got the EVO and LOVES it. I have the Incredible which is also amazing. The iPhone I think STILL need to play catch up a little and get off ATT, or at least off more then att for the US

Yeah, that's a big turn down on the Motorola Droid which I have. Business wise I spend a lot time on the phone and the phone's battery barely lasts a day.
Ended up buying an additional charger and two replacement batteries so that I always have a fully charged battery with me. Not so cool :-(

The iPhone really looks attractive ... esp with that CPU and that battery. And the display of course. But I need to have a hardware keyboard.
skinnyguy 3:26 AM - 9 June, 2010
hes - the few times i turned on 4g while out and about, i have gotten signal. in my house i get 2 bars of 4g. in the radio station i got about 2 bars. i think i had full strength at the mall or something.

that speedtest.net app is weird. all depends on what location you're locked onto. each location gives me varying rates. like honolulu gave me the slowest speed (slower than 3g) and kentucky gave me the fastest (a bit over 2MB). it seems to average 1.5MB on 4g for downloads.

but just for keeping facebook notifications current and OTA syncing, 3g is more than enough. google navigation worked fine on 3g for a bit too. everything seems so optimized, i can barely tell the difference in browsing or using speech-to-text or google goggles when using 3g or 4g.

and have you tried pdanet for tethering? i hear it will work and it's free. also, supposedly they haven't gotten all the kinks worked out of their system yet so you can use your sprint hotpsot for free....BUT only on 4g.....AND only till around july (that's when they hope to have things in place).

would be nice if they kept it like that forever....

and from what i heard, there's supposed to be some built in tethering on some sprint software somewhere? i dunno....

4G = HPSDA?
DeezNotes 12:31 PM - 9 June, 2010
I'm going to wait and see what HTC has in store now that the iPhone 4 has dropped. HTC puts out a lot of devices in comparison to Apple and I really like their devices. FaceTime is supposed to be open, so I would think that means other devices should be able to use it? Even if it's not open, if it catches on there will be others... just like every other product that's out. I'd like to see the new display on the new iPhone. If it looks as good as they say, I'd wait to see if all the other phone manufacturers follow suit. The current AMOLED displays are mediocre in sunlight. Not sure if the iPhone display just makes things sharper or if they make the display brighter as well?

Everyone's beef so far has always been battery life. I'm hoping these companies do something about that soon. I also hear the app makers have a lot to do with battery use as well? In any case, I'd love to see the old days of a battery lasting more than a day and a half.
Gamble 1:20 PM - 9 June, 2010
wifey got the incredible last week - great phone but it's been having the short battery issues. phone usually drops to 1/2 charge by mid-day with zero calls/texts and minimal web surfing. i told her to let it power completely down a few times and with full recharges it should start to improve, hope that's the case!
BriChi 1:30 PM - 9 June, 2010
a trick thats all over the forums is to do the following:

charge the phone with it off OR

1. plug it into the charger while on over night
2. Wake up, light is green and charged (but it is really not, it drained a little because it's been sitting there)
3. power the phone off, the light will go from green to off to red and charge for another 20-25minutes to top it off.

I do this every morning and the battery lasts easily all day.

Because I am a heavy user at work I did buy the Seidio 1750 battery for $40 which is the same physical size and adds a little more power so now it's even better

I have a bb tour right now and i thought i was the only person who does this lol.
I didn't read it on a forum anything like that, just from trial and error. It really works.

Guy at the vz store told me not to charge-over-night, cause it'll kill the battery's overall life faster then if you charge it only for a couple of hours or only til it's fully charged. That's all fine and dandy, but I don't have that kind of time to leave my phone alone during the day for all that jazz
BriChi 2:34 PM - 9 June, 2010

Been using the Evo since Monday night. This phone is killer. The battery does last all day with regular use. I left home at 6 am, got home at 7 pm and I browsed, posed on facebook and texted all day. It wasn't a constant non-stop but more like a regular user. I was basically testing the thing to see if it would meet my needs. It passed the test.

HTC Scorpion. Full specs aren't released yet but it's supposedly sporting a 1.5ghz processor. Game Over.

Naaaah. That was announced (or leaked) way too early. I want to see what they're going to make now that the iPhone has been officially announced (meaning... what are they going to COPY and/or improve upon).

Yes use the Verizon back-up that they pushed to all the phones. I backed up my Tour before I got the Incredible and it was a breeze.

lol

Also my phones battery last a lot longer now that I turned wi-fi off and only update my twitter when opening the app.

When you keep wi-fi on it's always roaming looking for connections. I was only using wi-fi at home which is kind of useless because I'll just use my computer if I need to go online at home.

I guess i had unrealistic dreams that i could have lightning speeds 24/7 but with any phone, the battery would die, the life is actually really good, i just had over a 2 hr conf call on speaker, and im sitting at 65% still.

I just learned that last week! Basically all it does is provide super user access. You cant use any wifi tether apps on the Evo unless you root your phone. the app above does this for you, otherwise it is a long process of grabbing files, loading to your phone, restarting, wiping all your data, renaming files, cmd prompts etc. the dudes above did all this for us.

Eventually they will have many custom roms for the phone, but i just really wanted this rooted so i can tether, and i tried it yesterday, its fast, and its free (usually costs $10-$30) for apps in the app store)

I dont know details specs (you can google them) but its Sprints Next Gen Network. I like to think of it as the upgrade from Nintendo to Super Nintendo... 8 bit to 16 bit. All other american carriers only have 3G set up, 4G is in development for the next couple yrs.

4G isnt rolled out to enuf cities from what i hear though, but sprint is ahead of the curve.
nik39 9:34 PM - 10 June, 2010
Ah... Sprint 4G = WiMax.

Hm... WiMax will not be supported by Cisco anymore. But then... there are other big players than Cisco. However, I thought the better option was LTE.

Sorry, I am a noob. ;)

dj hes 10:39 PM - 10 June, 2010
yeah how expensive is a monthly service?
nik39 10:47 PM - 10 June, 2010
Mobile Connect Flat 14.4 - 50€/month
The "normal" price is 35€/month at a max speed of 7.2Mbit.

Vodafone is already quite expensive, but they have one of the best networks. You can gat 7.2Mbit for 20€/month. (Leaving out all the fine prints ;) ).
nik39 10:48 PM - 10 June, 2010
I pay 8€/month for my 200MB/month. After you have reached the limit your speed will be throttled from 7.2MBit/s max to 56kBit/s max. 200MB is sufficient for my phone. I have a different plan for my laptop.
Kenny Q 1:25 PM - 11 June, 2010

I called Sprint and they are not taking preorders for the EVO at all.
They said I have to wait until it's available again.
That doesn't make good business sense to me.

According to Verizon, They are taking preorders on the Incredible but, it won't be available until mid July.

Also,
The Incredible is going for $150 on Amazon.

Sprint isn't known for their customer service lol, in fact, it flat out sucks. but you can probably to to best buy and preorder it for when it gets back in stock. Plus at best buy there is no $100 mail in rebate, its $200 for the phone when you get it with 2 yr contract. it also comes with a free blue tooth headset.

if incredible is $150 thats a good price!

also if you are trying to set up sprint service, try calling this number 1-888-882-4030. tell them you are wanted new service and wanted some good plan options and ask what they can offer.

Its a special line i think, but i was able to get 2 lines, 1600 anytime mins, , free roaming, unlimited nights and weekend, unlimited Mobile to Mobile (any network!) and unlimited data and text all for $109 a month. Then i set up an "employee discount" on my account for 27% off, so my bill will be pretty cheap with 2 phones!

I went to see the EVO yesterday at Best Buy and I'm glad I bought the Incredible. That damn EVO is HUGE (nm), I'm almost positive I wouldn't like walking around with that brick in my pocket. Dope phone but they should have made it the same size as the Incredible.

skinnyguy 8:02 PM - 11 June, 2010
sadly, there's a new rumor that sprint might start throttling speeds.

so much for that wonderful $10 premium data experience. or will that exclude evo users from that?

but i guess unlimited data at throttled speeds is better than limited data....i think.

as long as it's faster than tmo edge here, i'll be happy.

or maybe i'll keep my eye on tmo's 3g rollout here and jump back...

I'm not saying it's a totally bad thing, it's great for viewing webpages and shit but for me personally I wouldn't want to try and fit that thing in my pockets. Add a case and your really talking about a bulky device.

This is like a larger pack of gum, and added screen size is a + to me. Texting on the evo is dope, doesnt feel awakward like on a little phone.

4g isnt even available here in Cali (L.A.) so what would be the point of the EVO for me. My boy keeps trying to convince me to switch my iphone 3Gs to the EVO since he did but Im holding out for the iphone 4.

I get att service everywhere good except for my house but sprint just sucks balls period. I had sprint for years and glad i jumped ship.Always dropped calls inside buildings. My sister had Verizon for years but said it sucked so witched to ATT.
Not getting good service at home kills me but is it worth jumping to less "overall" reliable networks?

I don't know, but after rooting my phone I've realized that I prefer the stock Google experience. I've used HTC Sense and it has some nice functions, but it really seems that it adds more layers on top of Android.. some of which I don't use/need. There are enough apps/widgets out there that will let me tailor my phone to suit my needs and only run apps that I want to.

Whatever phone you have, you can also change the Launcher which will change the way the home screen and menus look overall. Currently, I'm using LaucherPro and it (along with some others) are very customizable in contrast to HTC Sense. Sense is nice, but these other Launchers can do what it does and then some.

The newer version of Android+HTC Sense has Friendstream for those people who are constantly on Twitter and Facebook, so apps like those are integrated nicely into the phone. Also, the HTC phone dialer is far superior to the stock Android dialer. You can get other dialers that fit your needs, but none of them are integrated as well as HTC has done it and I would assume Motorola did the same thing.

Last week I Rooted my Incredible and now I have Wireless Tethering for free. It's awesome because my girlfriend can now browse on her ipod touch while we're out. I'm also excited because now when we travel I dont have to stay in a hotel with WIFI.

To root it just download UnRevoked and plug in your phone to your computer then Root

which program do you use for tethering, i am rooted but some wifi hotspot programs i used dont work, The mac connects but I dont get an ip address
djchriscruz 8:48 PM - 2 August, 2010
I use Wireless Tether.
BriChi 9:30 PM - 2 August, 2010
yeah, i was using that, couldnt connect but then read there was a fix, had to drop a .bin file into a folder "android.tether" on the root of the sd car, works perfect now, thx
Steve Dub. 11:26 PM - 2 August, 2010
Can one of you guys step by step tell me how to tether my incredible to my mac?
DJ'Que 3:32 AM - 3 August, 2010
if you upgrade to the new froyo 2.2 tethering is disabled.
BriChi 3:51 AM - 3 August, 2010
no its not on the Incredible, maybe the new update as of today fixed it, there is a 8/1 release I just installed and can still tether for free via pdanet or if I need, wireless tether for a gotspot
BriChi 3:55 AM - 3 August, 2010
steve, without a "root" being done, PDANET with a usb cable is the easiest way.

1. in market, download and install the free version of pdanet, plug in usb and open the app
2. now go on your mac/pc and download the software (it will tell you the link you need when you open pdanet for the first time on the droid)
3. open pdanet on the computer
4. on the droid you have to turn "usb debugging" on, its in menu/settings/applications/development

now right click on pdanet on the computer and hit connect, give it a little to obtain and IP address and you should be good to go.
bill-e 4:51 AM - 3 August, 2010
just jailbroke dis here mufuckin iphizzy...i feel like it's wrong that my apple failure is working so right
Steve Dub. 5:06 AM - 3 August, 2010
Thanks BriChi! This will come in handy for sure. Can't wait till they just add tethering although I'm sure they will prob charge for that feature.
BriChi 12:48 PM - 3 August, 2010
yeah, you can tether now with the phone but its a monthly fee. just use pdanet, no need to root (jailbreak) it. It works perfect
djchriscruz 2:59 PM - 3 August, 2010
What do yall do to extend your battery life on the Incredible? My phone can barely make it through a whole day without being charged while I'm at work or in my car
Steve Dub. 5:17 PM - 3 August, 2010
I have the same problem chris, it's really the only drawback to the phone and it's avoidable if you have a car or office charger.
djchriscruz 5:31 PM - 3 August, 2010
Yea I love the phone I'm just concerned about the battery life when I'm traveling or out all day and I dont have time to charge it. Google Maps is CRUCIAL and a lifesaver when I'm traveling and walking around a city I'm unfamiliar with
Steve Dub. 5:59 PM - 3 August, 2010
I bought 2 batteries (the better ones) and a charger off ebay for like $10. Awesome deal and I always have a spare battery laying around.

If battery is that much of an issue I heard the Droid X has amazing battery life.

My new every 2 comes around in March, I'm gonna wait to see what cool phone is out then but for now the Incredible is a great phone.
Boba Tha Hut 6:55 PM - 3 August, 2010
my blackberry died but my coworker is selling me his so i can hold off until the Samsung Fascinate comes out.

My coworker has the ATT version, the Captivate and the screen is frigging ahmazing...

UI isn't as clean as Sense however.

Same here.

Battery lifetime is a huuuge turn down :-(
BriChi 8:22 PM - 3 August, 2010
I have the 1700mah battery, easily gets me through the day with a lot of texting and email, some phone calls. The stock battery sucked ass. My buddy at work got the 2150mah from verizon and it lasts him a lot longer, he loves it. The only downfall is the 21 batter makes the phone a tiny bit bigger which I didnt like, the 17 is still the same physical size as stock
Steve Dub. 9:16 PM - 3 August, 2010
Yeah I got 2 1700mah off of ebay.
Steve Dub. 9:17 PM - 3 August, 2010
Wonder if the 2150 is worth the extra bulk.
BriChi 9:18 PM - 3 August, 2010
according to my friend it is, he loves it. I get through a day with the 17 so I would rather just keep the phone slim
Steve Dub. 10:19 PM - 3 August, 2010
Yeah I get through the "day", it's the nights that I spin till 2am that it doesn't last. That's when I throw in a new battery before I head to the club.
Kenny Q 12:47 PM - 4 August, 2010
I have no complaints about the battery life with the Droid X.
I also bought extra batteries an a charger from eBay from someone in Hong Kong.
sixxx 1:38 PM - 4 August, 2010
No complaints on the Evo. I disabled everything that isn't necessary. I can go a full day with normal use. I also charge in the car and at work, so it's never really an issue. I'm thinking of buying an extra battery or one of those universal batteries that you can charge up to 4 phones with one charge. :)
Kenny Q 4:59 AM - 6 August, 2010
Brian, You wrote something about listening to Pandora and gps at the same time. I've been doing the same thing too but the gps is pretty loud compared to Pandora. Do you know of a way to lower the gps volume or raise Pandora's?
Kenny Q 5:03 AM - 6 August, 2010
By the way, I'm loving the "Swipe" thing. I just wish that I could swipe in English and Spanish without changing the settings.
BriChi 12:07 PM - 6 August, 2010
I dont think you can, Ill test later though. I think "media volume" controls both. Maybe there is a way though, I will definitely check it out
DeezNotes 1:58 PM - 6 August, 2010
There is Media Volume for music and Navigation Volume for GPS.
BriChi 2:05 PM - 6 August, 2010
yeah, Deez is right, just tested,

When in Nav, when you use the volume rocker it is just for nav volume,

Pandora, when in it, uses media volume. So when in nav, set the volume much lower, then go into Pandora and raise the volume, works great
sixxx 6:06 PM - 6 August, 2010
Yup... love the droid...

Kenny, any word you add to the english dictionary (even if it's spanish) will be kept and when you swype it, it should work.

No HDMI out on the iPhone = no go.

Also... that test was done without the new update on the Evo. :)

There are sooo many reasons why the Evo is better than the iPhone... but in the end, it will come down to the stuff you need as a user.
BriChi 6:45 PM - 6 August, 2010
exactly, the iPhone is for people that need to have an apple logo on their phone and not really need to stay on the phone for long periods of time while driving :)
BriChi 6:48 PM - 6 August, 2010
you know what, i cant even bash the iphone that much, it is a great phone but they need to get it to Verizon and other good carriers. ATTerrible is so bad by me

Again... show me the HDMI out on the iPhone... hahahaha

You're funny.... especially since you're still on the old iPhone hahaha
BriChi 7:01 PM - 6 August, 2010
let me add some that they left out

being able to use the phone without needing a case because you short the antennae out if you hold it - WINNER - EVO

GPS - WINNER - EVO

not having to hack the phone so you can do what you want to it - WINNER - EVO

being able to customize the crap out of your phone and set scenes based on you lifestyle - WINNER - EVO

setup usefull widgets like full screen calendars and Mail info - WINNER - EVO

seems like the article might have missed out on some more useful tests
BriChi 7:04 PM - 6 August, 2010
tethering the phone to a computer for free - WINNER - EVO
BriChi 7:05 PM - 6 August, 2010
droid beats you guys on many levels

VERIZON - number 1 reason
customization
HTC sense is sick
widgets for bookmarks, calendars, email, youtube, favorites for phone calls and many more
8mp camera
free tethering with a free app, again without have to jailbreak my phone
navigation BLOWS THE IPHONES AWAY by far, and I owned the iphones so I can compare from personal use
voice to text works great, especially when needing to to text while driving. No extra app needed, built right into the phones keyboard out of the box
oh and did I mention that verizon blows att out of the water. Has the droid INC since release date a couple of months ago, use my phone A LOT for phone calls when driving and never have i lost a call yet, except for my wifes call because she was driving with her iphone and dropped the call :)

what does the iphone have over the droid that I know of:
Apps - (yes you have a lot more apps but any of the usual popular apps most people want like myself, are out on the droid market)

facetime - novelty that will wear off IMO, yes its cool that it does it but again, most people will use and be like OH THIS IS SO COOL, show off to their friends and such and then never use it again. I have 3 friends of mine that use th iphone 4 and thats exactly what they did, havent touched it since

nicer looking phone, I will give it to apple that as usual they came out with a great looking phone, now if only you can use it perfectly as a phone without losing signal
sixxx 7:07 PM - 6 August, 2010
Exactly... thanks for going through the list... cause I'm too busy to type all that shit right now.

It's true. iPhone users love the Apple logo and that's really it.

I'll be right back... jailbreaking my phone so I can get it to do what I want it. lol
Steve Dub. 7:34 PM - 6 August, 2010
I gotta admit the ONE thing I've seen off the new iPhone is the video editing sofware. My friend made a couple and they look pretty sick. But THAT'S IT!!! (not enough to make me ditch my icredible)

I want to hire someone to get everyones phone and shove it up their a.......

Seriously, its so annoying already. Your gonna sacrifice one thing to another in any of these phones.

At my boys barbar shop the other day, there was one dude using his iphone and another that had and EVO. Dude was just chilling using his iphone when EVO dude just had to make it a point to speak lout enough so iphone dude could hear "The iphone is wack, it doesnt do this and it doesnt do that. iphone owners are brain washed and blah blah.
I about got up and smacked the shit out of this kid with his damn phone. There are a thousand reasons why someone buys the products they do and who are we to make a general statement what those reasons are?Of course here on a forum, if it doesnt apply to you, you shouldnt get all hurt, fair enough. But if homboy is sitting right next to me acting a fool, thats worthy of a smackdown IMO

One thing I noticed, when you make a negative statement about an iphone its a FACT but when you make one about the EVO, its an exageration.

Its retaded already how passionate people are about this shit.
So lets see: Im an idiot because I have an iphone, but then Im a smart guy because I use Sarato but then not really because you use Tractor Scratch, but then Im respected because I use 1200's, Now Im an idiot again because I dont use CDJ's as there easier to lug around for gigs. Now Im smart again because I have a PS3 because it has the best specs but then Im an idiot because XBOX 360 has better online gaming. Im a fan boy because I own a MACBOOK but I own a PC also so now your really confused and don't know what to make of me.

Has anybody had their Google Maps stuck on "searching for GPS"?

This weekend I was driving around DC(which I'm unfamiliar with) and the gps was stuck on "searching for GPS." But it still gave me the turn by turn directions. Luckily my girlfriend was with me to read the directions while I drive. I even shut down and took out the battery and it still was stuck on "searching for GPS" I was pissed because I really could have used Google maps. It works fine now but I dont know what I did to make it work again or if it just decided to get unstuck.
sixxx 2:27 AM - 10 August, 2010
That's strange.... Not here.

Google Maps also speaks when it's on Navigation so no need to have anyone read you directions.
djchriscruz 2:32 AM - 10 August, 2010
Yea but it wouldn't read them off, it was just stuck on "searching for GPS" and the screen would stay stuck on my starting location. But I could still view the turn by turn directions
Kenny Q 3:21 AM - 10 August, 2010
It's good to have an older GPS as backup.

My Droid X is starting to make me upset. Look for the names of people who text me is now a slow process. Looking for a contract is incredibly slow. I have trouble forwarding emails (most of them don't forward). Sometimes it kicks me out when typing an email.
I don't know what's going on. Maybe, I have too much stuff in memory.

Does any one else have similar problems?

That's one reason why I'd pick an HTC or Samsung phone. By default, the HTC Sense and Samsung TouchWiz dialers have the T9 search feature on the dialer. I never have to scroll to find a number - I just type the name in T9 short hand in the dialer and it'll find the contact for me. That should be a stock feature IMO. You can get it with the Dialer One app, but you can't uninstall your stock dialer so things get weird there.

As for email, you can try using another email app like K-9 Mail? Outside of that, I can only suggest restarting your phone. It is just after all just a Linux machine. Just like any other computer, sometimes a reboot helps.
