Laptop Crashed in Taiwan.... Holy $#@%

DJ Enferno 8:34 PM - 10 December, 2006
I think something must have happened to my laptop in transit from the USA to Taiwan, because once I turned it on during soundcheck, I saw some glitchy writing on the Windows XP Account selection page. Then, as I was soundchecking, 4 songs were all of a sudden showing a red question mark. I redragged the songs into Serato, and as I continue soundchecking, I get the blue screen of death. I shut it off, and can't even turn the thing back on now. Luckily, Serato is everywhere, and the DJ's here let me use their laptops. I had to download 1.6.2 and update their laptops, and even sticker their keyboards up. (Anyone else here sticker their keyboards?)

All in all, I had 2 good Live Project sets here. The whole laptop crash though was very very very stressful. Looks like I'm getting that new Macbook Pro after all! I'll post up some vid of a new Live set later. This one is an uptempo remix of Gnarls Barkley.

Tomorrow morning, I make that 24 hour trip back home. Too bad my IPOD is almost out of juice!
djtekno 9:19 PM - 10 December, 2006
Oh, that was very unfortunate. Good thing for those kind people. I really never get along w/ computers well, because of problems, and they stress me out, but for a simple program like Serato nothing will really happen. I want to see some new vids. of your LRP on Youtube. Upload 'em!!!
DJ Enferno 10:22 PM - 10 December, 2006
I'm sure it wasn't a Serato issue. If it was, then I'd still be able to reboot successfully, at least I'd think so. I'll upload the new vid when I get back from the trip.
DJBlisk 10:39 PM - 10 December, 2006
did you have an external hard drive with you for backup?

Sorry to hear about that Enferno. Cats here wonder y I keep 2 Mac laptops w/ me at ALL times.

Anywho what I would do in the future is install the latest Serato, put all your songs, have everything fresh and good to go. Then make a Restore Point in Windows XP, and if you have any problems, you can return to that point and it should be fine.

But it seems like you had a hardware problem of some sort. Have it checked out
DJ Enferno 10:44 AM - 12 December, 2006
Back now. The damn thing won't even turn on. No worries though. I was going to get a macbook pro anyway. And this thing is literally a big paperweight, and even if I got it fixed, I wouldn't trust it for gigs. I'm now looking into a more secure way to carry laptops as carry-on. Remember I use 2 laptops, not just one. It'd be great if there was a metal case that safely held 2 laptops.

I actually carry 2 laptops to all my regular club gigs (no Live Project, just mixing). In this case, since I use 2 laptops for the Live Project, then I needed to borrow one. I'll post new vid tomorrow. Only got one new routine to show. You've seen all the others.

One of those metal briefcases the bigtime drug dealers use would probably hold two laptops just need a foam cutout.

Check there. I have a pelican case that I use for my computer, mixer, microphones, power conditioner, and some other stuff...you can get it with sheets of pick and pluck foam where you can shape the foam to your equipment. The cases are virtually indestructable and come with a lifetime warranty.
DJ Enferno 12:51 AM - 13 December, 2006
Carpel Tunnel... that case looks pretty good, but a little big. I need to be able to carry on the laptops, as opposed to checking them in. I actually have 2 big Pelican cases (model 1650s) that I use for all my other stuff (footswitch, mixer, efx, keyboards, trigger finger, mic stand, cables, serato box, etc....). I love the pick and pluck foam! plus those things are pretty much indestructible. Thanks for the tip Michael Basic.. already got them. As for laptops though, I need something small enough to carry on, but big enough to fit not just laptops. I still need to bring clothes etc. For my last trip, I had both laptops in one bag, along with my SSL records and some other stuff (portable DVD player, IPod etc). The other carry on had my clothes, and some of the other stuff I need for my show, as well as snacks for the 24 hour trip.

I'm thinking of just getting 2 separate rollaway laptop bags, like the ones you'd use on a business trip. Each one fits a laptop and has room for extras like clothing, and other electronic items. I really like those Pelican cases that Michael Basic linked to, but they don't have any more room for other stuff.

thanks guys

I use a Targus laptop Backpack ( the matrix ). Its huge with plenty of room for everything (i have my leptop and viynl in one area, hard drive and cables and other computer related things in anouther area (diff pocket) and my SSL box and all cable has there own pocket, and i still have enough room to pack a days or 2 worth of clothing into it if I have to.

DJ Enferno 1:48 AM - 13 December, 2006
I was also using a Targus bag for my laptops, but a different one. My problem is, I can no longer fit 2 into one bag UNLESS it's got some sort of metal separation thing to keep the weight of one laptop off the other when it's lying on it's 'back'. See what I mean? I really like the Pelican 1510 but after looking at the interior dimensions and the foam measurements, I can only safely fit 1 laptop for 1510 case.
Dj KaGeN 3:29 AM - 13 December, 2006
To all those opposed to using an external drive (due to another point of failure) - this is my precise reason... Borrow a laptop and keep the party going!!
dj disturbed 4:00 AM - 13 December, 2006
and also eep 2 external HD.. one for show and a backup... then you can also store track on the lappy that you can use to get by with if the HD crashes in a show.

If you send in your own laptop to get the paintjob, it will void your apple warranty. They will only give you a 30 day warranty after they paint it. If you buy from them, you get the standard year long warranty which they (not Apple) are responsible for. They have their own shop that takes care of any maintenance or warranty issues. That's probably why it costs an extra $200+ bucks if you buy from them ($200 + about $450 for the paint job = about $650 extra). ouch

It's getting easier to navigate all my gear, the more I do this show. I've done this 7 times now, 6 outside of DC, and each time things get easier. Just like anything else that takes some practice. I've been reprogramming all my midi gear after picking up an M-Audio Axiom 25. I'm no longer going to bring out my Microkorg, 02 keyboard, and footswitch. I've realized that I can do everything with just the Axiom 25, the Trigger Finger, 2 laptops, and the EFX500. Less stuff to bring out is less risk.

Hey Enferno, I just picked up a 1560 for my external drives and my big ass alienware. Have you looked into that one? I thought the 1510 would be able to hold both of your laptops if they are MACs, but maybe not eh?

Keep in ming, anything above a 1510 in the pelican line is not allowed as a carry on unfortunately!

Sorry to hear about this issue. I would have freaked out man... :(

Wow, so does that mean you can't carry your 1560 with laptops onto the plane?
K-rad 1:37 AM - 29 December, 2006
I got stuff at colorware PC (mac mini, bluetooth mouse, keyboard, several old gen iPods). All of them are Jet Black, cuz I try to coordinate all my products to black to be consistent and look cool.

The Jet Black finish is has nice finish that is literally piano black look. It does have little of "orange peel" look and slight overspray on certain edges, but for most people, they will be happy with the finish. The paint job (or i guess the clear coat finsh) is surprisingly durable (I thought I need to baby this with gloves or something). BUT, I don't think it is meant to withstand the abuse and traveling like what you are doing Enferno. I still use cases for my iPod when I travel to DJ so they look brand new. People thought my black 4th generation non-video iPod was custom made by Apple or I got a beta/new version! This is when official black iPods never existed. As for Mac Mini (non-intel), bluetooth keyboard and mouse, I travel with them several times, wrapped in towel and placed in targus notebook case. So far.. just light scratches.

The customer service is great. I know there are others will can do cheaper but colorwarepc is one of the originals doing this kind of service with wide range of colors. Ha ha, it can be expensive but hella worth it. Did you get yours by now Enferno?

DJ Enferno 2:56 AM - 29 December, 2006
Haven't gotten it yet. I can't wait though. Good to hear that you've had a good experience with them k-rad.
DJ BIS 3:26 AM - 29 December, 2006
Two laptops (one backup unit) is defenitely the way to roll into any gig, specially overseas. Its the only fool proof way, unless they steal your bag... lol

Enferno, yeah, suppossedly the 1560 is not technically supposed to make it into the overhead compartment. Thank God I don't travel much yet, by the time I do need to travel I will probably have something different to carry out of state... We'll see. (In fact I heard from somebody that weight alone can be a factor in whether your stuff stays with you by your seat. In my case this thing is going to be like 50 lbs, so I doubt that I will be able to keep it onboard either way.)

The whole reason I got a Pelican case though is just so that I CAN put it in cargo if I have to and still have my equipment come out in one piece... But I hear that traveling performers NEVER put their important gear under the plane, is that true? Why exactly?
CMOS 3:36 AM - 29 December, 2006

I wonder if he just packs both laptops in that case? The thing I worry about is having too much weight of one on the other, even with the foam. hmm I may have to get one of those. Gonna do more research. Anyone know Hawtin's manager lol?
DJ BIS 5:37 AM - 3 January, 2007
I think two laptops on a case as wide as that is not a problem. I bought that 1560 thinking specifically about that. Depending on weight you may have to look into a set of foams of different kinds, etc... But I don't think it should be a problem.

DJ BIS 9:50 AM - 6 January, 2007
I got the 1560 in black. I put some much crap in it that the big foam pieces were reduced to thin little slices protecting all the gear. Everything is well protected and I have no problem with it but the foam is "pre-cut" or "pick & pluck" as they like to call it, and when you are trying to pack or unpack in a hurry it slows you down. If you are not careful the pre-cut foam can tear so you gotta take it easy as you pull the heavy stuff out.

I think I will order some solid pieces that I will cut myself, they will hold up to the punishment a lot better probably.

I got some video and pictures coming.

Hey Enferno, is that actual paint as far as you can tell? Powder coated? Anondized? I checked the website and they didn't really mention much about the process by which the colorizing is done. Since the macbook pro is metal, I'm going to assume they used some kind of electro assisted process to provide for a harder and less chip resistant finish.

They do look badass though.
DJ BIS 1:54 AM - 17 January, 2007
Powder coating and anodizing are not processes which you can apply to plastic or very light metals I don't think. but that red on a mac will defenitely get the looks. Nice, man!
