I was at the Rock the Bells show last night and they had 3 different DJ's thru out the night. They ALL used this wierd looking thing. It looked like it was a touch screen computer of some sort.
It wasnt serato or torq I dont think cuz none of them really used the tables. Dice actually did a nice little session for like 3 minutes but other then that they werent DJ's they were essentially being BJ's. (Button Jockeys)
anyone have any idea what it is?

I've seen some DJs have an MPC hooked up to play pre-recorded joints along with whatever they're spinning with. Maybe it was something like that?

yup thats what it was.
I dont know if I like those. It seems worse then traktor in terms of microwave material.
the DJ for Smif n Wessun literally did not do anything but push buttons and he thought he was the word.

A lot of Dj's use this when performing in groups. They store all the inst on there, so they can use both tables to scratch and cut.

I've been backing up artists on tour for quite a few years now so this machine isn't new to me. When I first read this I was actually a little shocked that other Dj's hadn't at least heard of it, but really I guess most of you/us (club Dj's in general) would have no need for the machine. But if you're thinking this is a microwave you're misinformed.
The first time I saw one was on tour with PE in 99. Dj Lord was using one and I thought it was the greatest invention ever. I was using two turntables and single CD deck with a show CD that would bounce everytime my crew was on stage so we had to put the deck on pillows (horrible experience). So when we got back to Toronto I went home and grabbed my Roland VS-1680 and started using that for the rest of the tours shows (and did so for years after that) but we were stuck with the same show format throughout the tour even though we knew that different cities react differently to different sets. We just had to get out there and perform our asses off and hope that our energy was enough to keep them interested.
Basically the machine allows you to walk with different sets for different venues and lets you freestyle a show on a moments notice, if the crowd isn't digging a certain spot in your show, you move it along, if they're going nuts and you want to stretch it (which PE is great at doing) you just let it keep going as long you want. Different pieces of the track can be cued so that if an artist messes up (or is that good they can freestyle a show as much as PE does) you can choose when the verses, choruses, breaks and climaxes hit. You don't have to worry about your show DAT (not that anybody even uses them anymore) running out on the track if you wanted to stretch it a bit, no worries about trying to switch up pre recorded track order like you would on a portable hard disk etc.. it really is a great little machine for tour DJ's, just no point for a club cat.

Do you think now that serato and other programs basically let you do the same thing just with turntables, that people will slow down on using instant replay?. Peace

i haven't seen any kind of decline of people using instant replay (and these dj's also use serato for the most part), and i still use it from time to time. also, what happens is sometimes certain artists don't have a single dj for all gigs, so they can carry the instant replay and program all the tracks in their set in sequence, and the dj they use for a particular city or set can get a feel for the set quickly and can scratch and do his/her thing over the tracks.
and shamann is right, its a great tool for tour dj's, but its use is limited for club/mobile dj's.

Everything that can be done with two turntables and a mixer has been done. It's time to be open for new stuff.

It's true...
My hotdogs just wont warm up on my 12's, no matter how many times I let them spin round...
Maybe coz there's no buttons to tell it how long it'll need to cook....
maybe this instant replay thing with all those buttons will do a better job...
Definately looks like somethin I could use to make some heat ;)
