i did. i had fake id's since before i graduated high school so i was always drinking and going out. buying booze for the guys & girls in my dorm freshman year supported my own drinking habit (skim a couple bucks off every 'order').
i started going to the bars and realized how shatty the dj was, but was still getting paid/laid. i took it upon myself to learn how to dj. i started using a program called tactile 1200 on my ibook, then moved onto a program called megaseg. i started doing my own house parties, then started doing other peoples. when i turned 21, i dropped off a demo cd and picked up a residency a few weeks later. i wasn't for a year or two that i realized that you don't actually have to be 21 to 'perform' at a bar, just to serve. oh well.
college towns are great place to pick up the art. many forgiving ears and tons of potential gigs. i was always 'noid about someone spilling keg beer on my equipment though.

Whaddup Pryme? I'm planning to make some guest DJ spots at some other clubs around Seattle this season, so I can probably work you in at Dante's in the U-District if you want a place to spin at. I'll be spinning there tonight (Friday) if you want to come through and hang out. There's 2 other DJs in rotation, but I'm looking to get out of the U-District and head over to Pioneer Square or Bell-Town soon. I'll also be at Spotlight (the old Aristocrats) in Downtown Seattle Saturday night in the main room all night long. That should be a lot more fun if you want to party. Holla at me!

I'm not 100% sure, but I might be spinning in BellTown on Friday the 22nd. You can probably fill in a 2-4 hour slot at Dante's depending if one of the other DJs will be spinning or coming to watch me. I'm not sure if the place will be that busy right before Christmas since most people in that area go home for the holidays. The Friday after Thanksgiving was pretty dead. 70% of the people that go to Dante's live within 2 miles of Dante's and just walk over. Send me a message and we can talk about it more.

I started Freshman year of High School. I always wanted to be a DJ since 6th grade, but couldn't afford it, because I was dumb not to save up my allowance.

I actually stopped DJ'g in college. Didn't do one party the whole 4 years. My skills obviously suffered as a result. Started when I was a sophomore in high school.

I started in a college bar, but I wasn't a student. I got out of the USMC and started working at a bar in my home town as a doorman. Had a chance to dj a private party, and I was always the dude at the parties that would sit in front of the stereo and play music all night so I jumped at it. 12 years later here I am, and I LOVE it!!!!!

I started in college. Thanks to the guys who showed me the ropes at the Vinylphiles Club Meeting on campus, I probably wouldn't know what to do had they not shown me the basics.

I got my start in college, as a freshman. Learned how to dj on a Numark dual cd player and radio shack mixer. As crappy as they were, I still rocked the parties. Got me an internship as a junior, then bought some turntables and a decent mixer, started collecting vinyl. Those were the days when I'd get $50 and free booze for a house party/kegger. That paid for my groceries man!

college is about education and building character. not for everyone. sometimes it doesn't even work for the ppl that go. but for those who can make it work, it's worth it.

What the F*&k are you talking about??? I DJ'ed when I was in school. Four of the BEST years of my life. I was able to grow as a DJ. Learned different styles of music and experiment. Things I would have been afraid to do otherwise. I loved rocking parties when I was in school, be it frat parties, formals or other campus events. Being a campus DJ allowed me to open concerts for artist and learn this business. Yes the money is VERY good in college, don't get me wrong BUT if you are a true DJ you will do it for the love anyway. Money is secondary. I have a good 9-5er going but you will still catch me on the tables, why?? Cause I just love that feeling you get when you have 1000+ heads bobbing to your ish!!!
Pryme, do ya thing man. I like what I hear.

College is great for the mind, and opens up new dimensions. It might even inspire you to do greater things with your life, not just settle for the everyday bs people are accustom to.

Also, not everyone can rely on dj'n as a source of income, at least not forever. You never know which way the economy will turn. You must have a back up plan when it comes to a career. If you don't have a back up plan, then you might end up with a job you hate or not earn enough money to live a comfortable lifestyle.
If this world were perfect, then all dj's could make a comfortable living dj'n clubs and radio stations, but unfortunatley this is not the case.
Yes, we dj for the love of music, but love for music doesn't pay the bills!!
